Please read my review if you're interested in how this bottle impacted our experience at this restaurant... :)
Raheem A.

After arriving to Lisbon from Lagos, my wife and I were looking for a place to have dinner. If you have ever walked the streets of Lisbon, you know that there is a plethora of restaurants to choose from. While approaching the end of a street, an employee emerged from within a restaurant called Peixaria do Rosso. The friendly woman handed over a menu, and ushered us over to a vacant table within their outdoor seating area. After looking over the menu, we placed an order for food (I ordered an entree and the Parmesan stuffed chicken with mashed potatoes) and for a bottle of wine. Being that we're not familiar with Portuguese wines, we randomly selected a white wine called Mar Salgado (translated in English as "the great salt sea"). Shortly after, the same employee brought the bottle of wine, uncorked it, and poured a very small amount for my wife and I to taste. Upon tasting it, we realized that it was not to our liking (that's the nicest way that I can put it), and politely asked the employee if she could send it back. Since the employee did not speak English well (respectfully), another employee came to our table to inquire about our request. I politely explained to this employee that we would like to have the wine sent back, and would like another selection that was on the menu. The employee made note of the new bottle that we wanted to order and five minutes later returned to our table with her manager. Now I understand that customer service is handled differently based on location; however, I felt like she should have informed us that she was consulting with her manager. Jose (manager), in a condescending manner, began explaining to me how the process of purchasing a bottle of wine in Portugal works. He explained that once the bottle is opened, he cannot sell it to another customer (clearly a no-brainer); therefore, he would be taking a loss (please keep in mind that I have an MBA-I say this with a humble heart) on the bottle if he allowed us to send it back. What Jose failed to realize is that he would not have to take a loss on the bottle. Since the wine that we selected (Mar Salgado) was offered on the menu with the option to purchase by glass or bottle, Jose could simply cork the bottle and sell the remaining portion by the glass (look at me giving away free business tips). My wife and I were so perturbed by the unprofessional manner in which Jose handled this matter, that we honestly cannot recall how the food tasted. Additionally, we observed the disgusting manner in which Jose interacted with his staff (his staff were maneuvering around him as if he had an invisible whip that he could crack at any moment). I think I would be giving anyone a disservice if I recommended this establishment to them. Hopefully, Jose will eventually learn that no matter their origins, you should treat paying customers with respect.

Highly recommended by our tour leader/guide, who took us to Fatima town in Portugal. In the middle of the historic site in Lisbon, we find this adorable and petit restaurant. Our server Farooq was amazing. He was polite, friendly and attentive to our needs. Since Portugal is very well known for their cod fish. Our first dish was cod à la lagareieo (with Swiss chard, cod fish, olive oil, drizzled with s/p and sprinkled with fried garlic) and side dish potatoes. Delicious (8.5/10). Second cod dish (smashed with vegetables and cod fish, with cheese gratin). Succulent (9/10). Prices were reasonable. Definitely recommended!

The codfish dumpling fusion was a pleasant surprise, creamy on the inside and a nice chewy gyoza wrapper. The octopus rice was good too. A decent amount of octopus with rice in a smoked bell pepper sauce. I was disappointed by the seafood pasta soup though. I liked the mussels, but the shrimp and the clams weren't the freshest. The clams were a little mushy. It had a nice seafood stock flavor, but definitely could have used more salt and seasoning. We had mixed service from one of the female servers.

We started with a glass of wine and a specialty cocktail with gin and cherry liqueur as a base. Perfect balance of herbal and tart and sweet. We shared the amberjack ceviche which was fresh and bright and then the rich & creamy prawn risotto. All beautifully executed. We each ordered a glass of 20 year port to celebrate my birthday and the staff overheard and brought a complimentary rich chocolate dessert. Very enjoyable meal all the way around.

It's rotisserie chicken doused with a spicy hot sauce so what's not to like? I knew it was a Portuguese-originated dish, so I looked for a place famous for it. Here on a Sunday evening, there was quite a queue extending up the cobblestone alley, so I realized this must be the place. Although it was at least thirty people deep, it didn't take more than twenty minutes for Jamie W and me to secure a table upstairs. It was a homestyle dining room set-up that hovered between cozy and crowded depending on the fluctuating volume level. Interestingly all the servers were male, and while ours was the most junior, he consciously followed the behavior of his veteran brethren. There was no question about our main course, the 13,5€ Frango Assado No Espeto (Roast Chicken on the Spit) (Photo 7). It was tender and succulent enough albeit a bit under seasoned, all the more reason to pour a liberal dose of the piri piri sauce (Photo 8). Our sides were simple but shareable, the 3,2€ Batata Fritta (French Fries) (Photo 9) and the 4,3€ Salada Mista (Mixed Salad) (Photo 10). Both were fine, though we really wanted to try their Cream Spinach. They were already out of it in the kitchen. We were quite satisfied nonetheless, and their service pretty much worked like clockwork. Jamie and I agreed we'd definitely come back if the passion for poultry strikes us on a return trip to Lisbon. In the meanwhile, I'll just do a run to Costco, buy a rotisserie chicken, and dream of Portugal. FOOD - 4 stars...succulent poultry with a unique spicy kick AMBIANCE - 4 stars...like an old-fashioned dining room in a Portuguese home SERVICE - 4.5 stars...they move quickly and courteously TOTAL - 4 stars...a Lisbon institution worth checking out RELATED - Exploring Lisbon? A small line of one or two groups at a time formed throughout the night. We were seated outside and there was a street performer with an acoustic guitar - def added some great vibes to the night. It was a chilly December night but the heater provided *just enough* warmth. We ordered the codfish cakes which were alright - nothing too special. Since it was a little cold out, I also ordered the chicken broth. It was bland, but good in its own way. There was some rice and chicken bits in it that tasted really good. The rotisserie chicken that they are known for was EXTREMELY salty. We were a group of 6 and ordered 2.5 rotisserie chicken (so 5 pieces) but this was actually way too much. It's a little better (but still salty) if you don't eat the skin, but that's the best part given how crispy it was! I tried to drown out the saltiness by using the piri piri sauce and it helped a little bit... but biting into the chicken meant biting into the undissolved salt bits. Given how salty it was, we could not finish it at all and left behind 3 pieces. Service itself was meh. They made sure to inform us that the tip was not included in the bill.

He will talk to you for hours and teach you about food and wine and culture and talk about the history of food and how it came to be in Portugal. I loved it. I learned so much. I aspire, as an American, to learn from and look up to other cultures. I feel very honored to have dined in a restaurant managed by him on our trip to Portugal. I'm going to recommend to our travel coordinator to add this restaurant to the Google map recommendations list because more people need to go to this place - they need more tables, more space, because I'm convinced this is such a hidden gem that should be exposed to the masses to enjoy! We visited several wineries and this restaurant had the best wine - bar none! The fish, a fish I hadn't tried before, was deliciously seasoned, falls apart with the fork, the creamy rice was just divine. I normally will never eat little cherry/grape tomatoes - ever - but the perfect bite of fish, creamy rice, and a tomato was... perfection. The menu is deeply curated; flavors - textures - wines that make sense. You can tell Frederico what you normally like and he 100% knows what wines he has that you will love. The tomato, orange, ham, salad, was absolutely balanced and delicious. I'm so grateful that our first trip to Portugal we got to meet Frederico and dine with these wonderful people who love food and wine as much as us. I'll never forget it as long as I live. You will not be disappointed. Promise.

It was not crowded at all on a Friday night, and I was able to strike up a conversation with fellow diners and actually hear myself talk. That is rare these days. I was surprised they were offering Happy Hour pricing around 7 PM, so I quickly took advantage of a pitcher of sangria, which was delicious and incredibly fresh. I started with the chorizo, which you cook yourself right at the table. For my main course I ordered the steak with eggs, and it was excellent. To finish, I had the crème brûlée for dessert, and it was also outstanding. Overall, a truly wonderful hidden gem in Lisbon. I cannot wait to return.
