The space consists of a lofty downstairs and a cozy little upstairs area, and is located right in the heart of Seattle's most exuberantly queer neighborhood. And this store can hang. The selection of art, clothes, jewelry, gifts, cards, and more is both extensive and carefully currated. This is my go-to spot for a last-minute gift that is unique and thoughtful. And the owner is fantastic!! Aside from being a warm presence as you browse the store, she is also clearly devoted to quality. I once bought a tarot deck that had been used as a display, and she told me to make sure and return if any of the cards were missing... They were not, though, because as I said, Retail Therapy is just that good. read more

Retail Therapy is a fun, quirky little shop nestled in on Capitol Hill. The place has some great brands of soap, lingerie and other fun knick knacks. They have a nice selection of designer canvas bags by the front door. Steve bought one of Michelle Obama riding on a swing. He saw that back in Denver and did not seize the opportunity to buy it at the time so I am glad he got a second chance to buy it. Original review: I was wandering around Capitol Hill one lovely autumn day, and I went into this store to check out their t-shirts. I saw this adorable shirt with a sloth on it. One of my friends is obsessed with sloths, so I thought I'd send her a photo of it. Conceivably she might even come by and buy it, or ask me to get it for her. The moment I snap the photo, the lady at the counter says, very sternly and accusingly, "DON'T DO THAT." I'm not entirely sure she's talking to me at first, but I look over, confused. "Huh?" "GET OUT. I SAID DON'T DO THAT." "Sorry, do what?" "WHAT YOU JUST DID. GET OUT." "Sure, I'll leave, but are you talking about taking a photo? What's the harm in that?" "YES. WHY WERE YOU TAKING A PHOTO?!" "Uh, to send to my friend? ... Okay, nevermind, I'm just gonna go now. Jeez." I get it, stores like this are concerned that people will treat them like showrooms and then go buy online without the markup. But, attempting to police that won't actually work (I could easily just type in the name of the item if I wanted to avoid taking a photo) and it just leads to paranoid and rude confrontations like this one. I buy from local shops despite the (necessary) markups when I feel positive towards the owners and want them to stay in business. Obviously, that's not gonna happen in this case. read more

Yup, this is the place I head to when I'm feeling a little off and need to exercise my capitalism muscles to feel a little better. There are a couple of items here that I keep coming back for since I can't find them anywhere else, namely the hemp massage oil (in skinny dip- ooooh) and the amazing $17 candles. Trust me, they're worth it- they fill the entire house with lip-smackingly delicious scents and make me feel just a little bit happier everytime. To my friends that I've given these as gifts to? I'm sorry. I know I started you on an addiction. But better $17 candles than bootie-widening chocolate or.... right? But Wazhma, the lovely proprietress stocks her shop with much more than just haba stuffs. She seeks out the freshest pieces from local and regional designers and mixes them with basics from more affordable lines like frenchie and AA. The result? A great place to piece together a first date outfit that you won't see on the woman at the table next to you. I'm an especially big fan of "the people have spoken" line. Everything I've bought at this store garners me lots of compliments and attention. And ooooh doncha know, I'm a sucker for stuff that gets me noticed. Well, on the plus side, the people running it are really cool... and they've hosted some pretty awesome musical performances (like some of my friends' 5 piece ensemble)... they have neat art, neat stuff that they clearly took some time in deciding to sell... and they are very willing to let you just come in, smell lotions, fondle candles, and giggle at the sillier pieces of "who on earth would wear... ohhhh I forgot, I'm in *that* part of town..." On the minus, prices are higher than what a lot of other places charge for the same (or similar) stuff... it's a bit forgivable given their primo location, but still... it's ultimately window shopping at best for me, and sometimes, that is all I need to get my mind out of a funk. In other words, my budget and my already full of stuff home are kinda glad they charge a lot for a little. It means I don't spend as much money and don't clutter up my space so often. That said, if I had a friend in need (who likes to shop, that is, which most of my friends don't actually enjoy)... this would be the kind of spot a gift certificate would not be scoffed at :) read more

I finally picked up the dress I had on layaway 2 Saturdays ago...and that was the day of my friend's wedding. I know, I really procrastinated on picking up the dress (its one of those dresses you can tie into different looks) but Wazhma was so kind to help me tie on the dress. Such a great little store! It's cute and has things - lots of things. If you're looking for a gift or something a little offbeat and original, you can't go wrong here. Clothing sizes are Hipster Small, so nothing for me - which is a shame. But they make up for it with the men's underwear shows - which I think is part of a guaranteed fun night out on the Hill. (If not for teh sexy, for teh lawls) My only beef are the hours: not posted on the door or the website, so when I do want to irresponsibly spend some money it's a real gamble as to when they're open. read more

My Retail Therapy favorite is their jewelry collection. Even though they are a somewhat-boutique, prices are fairly reasonable for your artsy fix. Get some therapy in retail or retail in therapy. Got some super sexy boots here while drunk shopping and they have really cute chonies/tidy whities like Ginch Gonch in small sizes - ladies! The owner is delightful. This review comes with a dare: Just try to leave empty handed. They have things for men and women. I walk by Retail Therapy often, it helps that I often get out of work late and most store are already closed. Couple of weeks ago I realized I was in need of more summer clothes that are not ironic t-shirts, and I was able to get out of work at a regular time like 5pm. Retail Therapy carries a brand called Skunkfunk from Spain. Their clothes are mostly knit and beautifully constructed. The store owner then said the magic words: "Buy 3 get 1 free". It's still not cheap, but it takes the sting off my wallet. It helps that the store owner is really nice and will leave you alone to browse. She also does a great job curating items that you are not likely to find elsewhere without it being too outrageous. They also have a small but lovely selection of greeting cards and gift wrapping kits. read more

I've bought a number of random items here- including hats, cards, my wallet, and suprisingly, the engagement ring for my fiance! Retail Therapy always has just what you're looking for- even if you're not sure exactly what it is you're looking for. Razuma (the owner) is helpful but not overbearing. I love their selection of greeting cards- unique, local, and it's my go-to place for same-sex occassion cards (weddings, babies, new houses, etc.) They are definitley not the cheapest store in town but that's a-ok with me. Retail Therapy makes up for it with their participation in the local community, location, and great selection! Also, lots of cute underwear for guys and girls. read more

I went in today to buy a present for my sister's birthday, and the woman behind the counter was very kind and helpful. She helped me pick out a necklace, since I'm awful at choosing gifts, and out of kindness she sold it to me for 10% off! I would definitely recommend this store to anybody, and I will definitely come back to buy gifts for friends and family. Really sweet little store with friendly employees. It's a boutique, so it sells mainly cute, kitschy items, with what appears to be a burlesque makeup salon upstairs. Tight, colorful underwear for the men and women who like to strut their stuff. Tissue-thin, transparent long-sleeved Ts (I bought one and I love it), much like the ones J.Crew sells, but much less expensive and more contributing to the local economy. read more
