Ironically, the people are not the friendliest in the Ballard location- I've shopped there for years but am often ignored by the hipster sales staff even if I'm the only other person. My experience at the University is the opposite- super friendly cashier who was warm and welcoming. They have a beautiful website and Instagram page so there's lots of options to explore this exquisite (but sometimes snooty) business.

I had been looking everywhere with no luck, and then while walking through Cap Hill I spotted the PERFECT pair of black and pink TrippNYC cargo pants in the window. I went inside and asked two lovely associates Tiara and Maria about them, and even though the store was out of stock, they did not give up on me. These two literally pulled a full mannequin out of the window display, moved all the merch around it, pulled the pants off and practically undressed the poor guy, just so I could try them on. I'm not kidding. That is NEXT LEVEL customer service. The mannequin was wearing a medium and I usually wear a large, so I thought it was over. But since they're super baggy cargos, we decided to try it anyway... PERFECT. FIT. Not only did they fit, but they matched perfectly. I walked out with exactly what I was hoping for, and honestly it made my whole day. Huge shoutout to Tiara and Maria for being so kind, helpful, and willing to go way above and beyond. That kind of service is rare, and it's what makes places like this stand out. If you're in Cap Hill and like clothes with personality, go here. It doesn't feel vintage, nor does it have a distinct 70's era feel like some of the other vintage shops I've gone to. It feels classy and sophisticated. Do you have a scotch and we can talk vintage buttons, sowing techniques, and made in Seattle brands? The only downside is that staff have appeared really snooty. I feel collectors of vintage know what they are looking for and this shop caters to this. Prices are also high for what I could hunt for online or from a private seller. The plus is that the clothes don't have the Goodwill smell and you are getting a garment that is really being looked over for holes and is steamed. The Lucky vintage on the ave is not as well curated. It has a different feel and it reminds me of a vintage Salvation Army . I feel it's the aesthetic, lighting and space. I do like the pops of pastels that stand out more in the clothes than the Ballard location. Staff are also snooty and don't really appear to greet or ask if I'm looking for something. When I stopped by, there were plenty of people checking out the Halloween costumes, but plenty of space for a nice browse. I ended up getting 2 fun T-shirts and a sleek phone case (looked brand new!) for just over $20. While the selection of clothing isn't huge compared to other thrift stores I've been to, it was organized well and there are always gems to be found if you're willing to look. The cashier was nice and friendly, and I walked out happy with my goods. Appreciated the Community Board as well, with a nice curation of events going on in the area!

When I moved and switched jobs I called the non profit and they brought out a truck with two staff to pick up my gently used furniture. I even had some baby clothes that they donated to Mary's place. I continue to support however I can and really like the stores displays. The non profits mission and values are very clear and they are so community centered. I often refer folx in need of the rapid HIV testing that Out of the Closet provides. I'm happy that the money goes to fund this service. Also, great customer service and excellent staff. As the hill continues to evolve and change, I am so happy that Out of the Closet remains a Cap Hill staple. 10 stars!
