When I shop for gifts outside of my neighborhood (East Hollywood), Retreat is my go-to. Diane, the owner, has curated a wonderful collection of jewelry, art prints, cards and fun gifts for virtually any occasion. Despite this shop's relatively small size, it is packed with goodies. My go-to is always the card section, where I invariably find a card for an upcoming birthday or, even better, the perfect card for a friend who could use a pick-me-up or a good laugh. My stationary drawer is packed with Retreat cards that I've got on the ready and I am very grateful. There is a great range of options in terms of price. You can find very fun patches and charms for around ten dollars. If you are looking a bit higher-end, there is a lovely collection of jewelry: but you are definitely paying for quality work that will be appreciated. This used to be one of my favorite shops, and my mom's too, but we recently had a strange and unpleasant experience. The person working there (possibly the owner, though we're not sure as we'd never encountered her before) was very rude and dismissive towards my mom. My mom was talking about her recent flight and some news she had heard about flying, as she had just arrived from out of town to visit me. The woman with short blonde hair suddenly interrupted, saying, "We DO NOT talk about that in here, NOPE! NO!" If you don't want to discuss a topic, there's a polite way to steer the conversation elsewhere. You don't need to be dismissive and rude, especially to customers. My mom felt terrible and shut down immediately. We left and won't be returning. It was a really bizarre and disappointing experience that ruined our visit. read more

This is my very favorite "hidden secret" shop to find something for friends and loved ones in South Pasadena. I score every single time I visit! They have a consistently changing and eclectic assortment of jewelry, candles, cards, accessories, homegoods, and more. The employees are always very friendly and helpful without being intrusive or pushy in any way. I have bought adorable children's handwarmers, necklaces, fun greeting cards, candles, candle holders (I recently got one for my mom that was made in Maine, and it's a most beautiful conversation piece!), rings, flasks - all kinds of cool things. RETREAT opened in downtown South Pas last week. The name made me think of a spa and I thought they might have nice Mother's Day gifts. I also spotted a wall of handmade cards (lots of letterpress cards) and I had to take a look. The style is edgier than what my mother in law would favor though they did have some candles, soaps, and bath bombs that would be MIL appropriate. First, the selection of cards was unique. I've been to every place that sells greetings cards in this area but I hadn't seen most of the cards at Retreat. For some reason, much of the merchandise and cards feature profanity. But some of the cards were quite nice - not girly nice or cutesy/kawaii but irreverent nice. Unique is a good descriptor for the store. They carry a lot of local and handmade items, including handmade ukuleles, yoga straps, wallets, dolls, jewelry, journals, and frameable art prints. There's a fair amount of cat and dog themed merchandise. You can also find pins, coasters, matches, pencils, trays, socks, and flasks. read more

Sparkle in the sun. I stumbled upon this one-of-a-kind store with my lady friend some time ago and have loved coming back ever since. Came back again to do some shopping around South Pasadena. Was immediately greeted when I came, and had a great time looking at the new goodies they have. What stood out to me the most were the ukuleles. They were nice enough to let me play one of them, too. Great sounding. I think what I enjoyed most are their candles (the beer smelling candle ACTUALLY smelled like beer! haha. So did the bacon candle). They are very unique, and I now kinda wish I got some for a Mother's Day gift to my mother in law. She'd love something like that. Hey, maybe for her birthday, instead! I walked in with my Fiancé who is a musician that was drawn to the beautifully crafted, handmade Ukuleles in the front. It was just my kind of store! So many unique items - jewelry, stones, art work, oils and trinkets. I had to be careful not to buy the whole shop! I had a great conversation with the owner, Diane. Very friendly and personable. She let me try on a gorgeous gold plated moon stone bracelet and a vintage re-purposed earth locket necklace. I couldn't resist and bought them! I have been to this little gem of a shop a couple of times in the past 6 months. Most recently I was looking for unique jewelry to fill the void from having most of mine stolen. Jenny was so helpful and patient with me; allowing me to try on many things and combining strings of semi precious beads to find just the look I wanted. I mentioned that I had lost my engagement ring but was reluctant to buy another one since I didn't wear my stolen one all the time. She showed me some absolutely beautiful gold rings with white sapphires and there was one with a single stone that just went perfectly with my one of a kind wedding band. It's perfect to wear as a set or alone and since the stone is set to be low profile, I think I will wear it much more than my previous diamond band. I ended up buying several of the strands of beads to mix and match as well as a lovely turquoise pendant necklace. It was a wonderful way to begin my jewelry collection again and I just had so much fun! This is a delightful shop with very nice people, like Jenny, working there.
