What makes Retro in Middletown stand apart from the rest of the gyms in the area? Let me tell you because I am so glad I made the switch over from another gym last year. This Retro is run by owners Alan and Stella and they are to be commended for their commitment to running a gym that operates very professionally while maintaining a hometown feel to it. I really appreciate the fact that the owners are onsite making sure the gym runs smoothly. They are very friendly and available to their clients. Their gym is very clean and the locker room smells good. The ladies locker room often has fresh flowers. They have a great selection of equipment. I especially appreciate that they have two excellent rowers and four excercise bikes with arms that provide more of a full body workout. The other gym I went to only had one mediocre rower and two of those bikes which meant oftentimes you had to wait to use them. And that was at a much larger gym. They have an outstanding training team that really care and go above and beyond led by Tom Wiley. Without his encouragement I wouldn't be much healthier today and 40 pounds lighter. They also provide nutritional assistance which I have found immensely helpful in helping me attain my weight goals. Trainer Elyse Kakos has been especially helpful in guiding me thru weight training and providing meal plans and recipes. Her passion to help clients holistically goes above and beyond any experience I have had or heard about being provided at any other gym. I would continue at this gym just for the excellent training provided to me that is invaluable. It's not expensive! Compared to many other gyms I think you get the most for your money at Retro Middletown. I also like that there is a wide age range of people there and people at all different levels of fitness. It's a very welcoming atmosphere I don't feel intimidated and people are polite. Lastly, I like their location with Walgreens right next door and Shop Rite in the same plaza. It's very convenient to work out and then go and get my groceries. For these reasons I think Retro of Middletown stands out and is an excellent choice! read more

The Owners Alan and Stella Gaft TOXIC Personalities, The Equipment is always broken and takes a month or more to repair. The Men's bathroom is always out of service . Little or NO A/C ,on hot days ! If a gym member complains about anything the Owner Stella Gaft tells them there are other gyms to go . The Owners do Not know how to treat their gym members and Employees as all their trainers are always Quitting. My husband and I joined almost a month ago..the equipment is well maintained, everything is super clean, the ladies and men's room are spotless..!! The staff is friendly, knowledgeable and very helpful, too! So, why only 3 stars? Well- People hog the machines. Sometimes, it's groups of guys standing around texting, etc a particular machine. Other times, it's some dude sitting down at a machine...doing one set...then relaxing talking on the phone, texting for 5 minutes at a time. Yesterday, we saw this multiple times on multiple machines and we weren't even there at peak gym times. We don't go into the gym to hang out.. We do our cardio, and then hit the machines for strength training. We don't have a lot of time to spare so waiting for a particular machine because some dude is having a chat with his buddy or his girlfriend(etc) while SITTING AT THE MACHINE is super annoying and has to stop. I hope management corrects this issue immediately so everyone can get their workouts in without dealing with this type of nonsense. Thanks for reading. read more

This review is for retro fitness in middletown,nj. I been a member for about 6 years since B-4 covid and I have to say it's a great gym, and the price is right. I go about 4 days per week and not once, NOT ONCE,did I not see someone from the staff walk threw the gym and check out if everything was going ok. and that nothing was wrong. Also they clean and mop the locker rooms threw out the day as they need it. When a piece of equipment breaks down it is fixed quickly as soon as they get the new parts in. Also they just added two new massage chairs, and they are great, I use them everytime I go to the gym. The only thing is they only give you 10 minutes everytime and its not exactly enough, I wish it was more like 15 minutes, but the massage chairs are like the cherry on top of the cake, and you get to use them at no extra cost .if you have the ultra membership. I never had any problems with the staff ,they always been polite and friendly. read more

I recently returned to the gym after ten years. I did not feel comfortable coming back to the gym especially after my injury. Every morning Roger greets me with have a great work out. He smiles and always makes me feel welcome. When I leave the gym, he always says goodbye and to have a good day. This has made me feel so much better every time I go to the gym. I like it. It in a shopping center by shop rite so I can kill two birds with one stone. Only draw back is that it's not as big as some gyms. It can get crowded fast. I go early so it's not so bad,but when I get tied up and go later in the day,it's a little nuts. All in all it's fun and I like it. All different types of people from young to old. I walked in with my 5 year old son. The kid at the desk was sitting there with his head in his phone and ear pods in. I had to get his attention. I asked about rates for retro. He acted like I was bothering him. I was fully intending to sign up for this gym. I asked the kid to take a look around before signing up. He said I was going to have to sign a waiver to walk around the gym. Which is fine. He looked at my 5 year old son and told me I was going to have to leave him at the front desk alone while I walk around the gym quickly. I assured him I was going to hold his hand and not let him wander around the gym. He would not let me take a look at the gym. I asked if there was anyone else in the gym that might be able to give me a tour and he said no. I will be taking my business elsewhere. This Ronald McDonald gym is not for me. read more

I have been going to Retro Fitness gym in Middletown, NJ for over 9 years. I have always used a trainer and the trainers have changed over the years as they have left Retro for other jobs. My latest trainer is Elyse Kakos, my first female trainer. At first, I was hesitant using a female trainer, as I thought my workout would not be as rigorous as with a male. I was mistaken. I am a difficult client because of my medical issues which require adaptation in my workouts. Elyse has managed these challenges with dedication and understanding. My workouts with her are rewarding and comprehensive. Elyse has also taken an active interest to steer me to better eating habits to help with healthier weight control. She keeps copious notes on my progress and adapts quickly to any struggles I may be having during the workout. I am very pleased with Elyse's diligence and professionalism to my exercise regimen. I wanted to post a review because I am so impressed with the new renovations at the Middletown Retro. Its nice to see the owners investing back into the club and making these improvements. The new floors look great and the new equipment not only looks great but is a nice upgrade from the older cardio equipment. I have also been using the new stretching and training area that replaced the old theater room. I liked the theater room but I have to say that I get much more use out of this new area. This new area has helped put some new life in my workout routine. I have worked out at the other gyms in the area and I prefer this gym over the others for the reasons above as well as the overall cleanliness of this gym. Thank you Retro! read more

Contrary to the only other review posted for the Middletown Retro Fitness, I believe that this gym and location is quite worth the money, and I'll tell you why. For starters (and this is probably the most important point that needs to be recognized) Retro gym membership is $20/month, or roughly 67 cents a day. Can you really complain about that? No, I don't think so. As for the Middletown location, yes it's smaller than other Retros (Jackson is fairly large) and thus it has less space for equipment and sometimes you have to wait, but this is about perspective. For 67 cents a day, is it really that big a deal to wait? What matters to me is that the gym is very clean, conveniently located, and it has better hours than other locations (open 24 hours a day most days). And this doesn't apply to me, but there is some sort of children's area near the front where gym-goers can drop off their kids while they exercise. As far as I remember, I haven't seen this at any other location, and I've been to a few (Jackson, Neptune City, Freehold, and Wall). Seems like a nice perk for 67 cents a day. Also, I have never had to park more than 200 ft (roughly 100 steps, or a 25 second walk (oh, god, not a quick walk to get into the gym. What a world!)). All in all, I am very pleased with this gym, but I imagine that it's because I am both an optimist (my water bottle is half full) and because I have some perspective on the matter. Could it be less crowded at times? Sure. Could it be bigger? Definitely. Is this gym somehow less great than other gyms for these reasons? No. You get what you pay for, and in my opinion, at Middletown Retro Fitness, you get a whole lot more. read more

Very comfortable gym to workout in. Staff are friendly, people working out are cool (never feel like your being judged by others), and it's super clean. Love the fact they have several adjustable benches in the free weight section; I often join my wife at another gym (which I tried to talk her out of) and you can't adjust the inclines enough. read more

The price is great, but you get what you pay for. I initially joined the Edison, NJ location, which is HUGE and has more than enough cardio machines. Sadly, Middletown is not, and therefore you frequently don't have a choice in using a treadmill or an elliptical machine. You just have wait, or use whatever is free. Even worse is the staff. Only recently did they hang a few (and I counted only 3) signs to wipe down the equipment. Less than half of the patrons wipe down their machine when they are done. The staff couldn't care less either, as they can't see half the machines even if they looked in their direction. I highly suggest you wipe down the machines before your workout, and after. Hopefully we can set an example for the rest of the establishment. Parking is a little tight if you're type that can't walk more than 20' to the front door. There's plenty of parking on the side by Rite Aid. And hey, what's a little extra walk to the gym? read more

This review is actually for the Lincroft location -- which is a huge improvement from the West Long Branch Retro. Pros: 1. Big windows give the space great natural lighting. I don't feel like I'm doing my workout in a dungeon like I do at the other Retros. In fact, the brightness makes me feel more cheery and energetic. 2. All new equipment including a few machines I've seen for the first time. 3. It's very clean. There always seems to be a staff member circulating around the gym wiping down machines and resetting equipment for the next user. 4. The aerobics room is a nice touch and a great place to do your own thing. It is fully stocked with jump ropes, steps, physioballs, and low impact weights. 5. I haven't had to wait for any equipment... yet. 6. It's a calm atmosphere. Cons: 1. There's a whole row of cardio equipment that is facing the big windows. You literally must wear sunglasses and sunblock to use those machines in the morning. 2. The staff frequently gathers at the far end of the front desk to shoot the breeze while blatantly ignoring members as the enter and exit the club. They could definitely use some customer service training. 3. There's no water fountain. Is that even legal? 4. There's only one flat bench and no stair masters. 5. The aerobics room has virtual classes. One person could tie the whole room up by themselves while they do a class. Despite the cons, it's a nice club and I'd definitely recommend the Lincroft Retro to anyone who looking into joining there. read more

No matter how crowded no one will try to jump on your machine or grab your weights the second you look a way.
