I found this shop while looking for a clothing store that is LGBTQ+ friendly as I was looking for something to wear to Missie Bs. When I went in there, I was greated warmly and treated the same as any other client. While I was there, I was given several items to try on and given honest opinions on how they appeared. I've been back a few times since and each time I felt completely welcomed. We were shopping for a special occasion dress when another shop referred us to retro vixen. My daughter and I are not shoppers and here we didn't have to be! We explained what we were looking for and the ladies brought us 3 options. Jess stayed by our side while my daughter tried on each one and after we decided on the one, she gave us tips for shoes and accessories to purchase later that could dress it up or down. That's my kind of shopping. I'll be honest - I didn't expect to find something modest. With vixen in the name I made a judgement. I was so very wrong. We left with a modest and flattering dress. Whoa, almost a year since my last Retro Vixen review and so much has changed here that I'm reminded it's time for an update! As the special announcement on Yelp indicates, the store has doubled in size, now that Vixen Photography has moved shop. So, it's like a whole new store, and one you may never want to leave (that retro couch is so comfy and the perfect place for you to plop your a$$ while waiting for indecisive friends in the dressing rooms that have been added in, too. I say this fully knowing that sometimes it will be my friends-or the K- waiting for *my* indecisive self). In my last review I mention that accessories were the star of the show here, but now they share the stage with the frocks, unmentionables, pants, tops, and sweaters. There are still tons of fun gifty stuff for every budget, but you'll appreciate the clothes from Monkey Wrench, Pin Up Couture and more. Although I have an entire closet just for my vintage frocks, I'm appreciative of new stuff made to look vintage, too. Let's face it, I'm not the most delicate of ladies and as a result, have an entire clothing rack in that aforementioned closet with sad, ripped dresses. But Vintage Vixen has more than dresses. Looking for an adorable shorts playsuit similar to what your grandma rocked in the 1940s? Retro Vixen has 'em. Also: refurbished vintage lingerie (dead stock, never worn and newly designed), bathing suits, pencil skirts, high waist pants, sweaters, blouses, and corsets (the real, read: costly, deal. And know that if you're not paying a lot of money for a corset, don't even bother buying it. You spend a lot and it will last you years. Get a cheap one and the boning will be piercing your pelvis in no time). Let's not forget: purses and shoes galore, gloves, jewelry made by local artisans, racy Sin In Linen sheets and pin-up art by none other than Krysztof Nemeth. It's Retro Vixen for a reason, and I highlight Vixen cause their stuff's got sass. Women of all sizes pretty petite to big and beautiful can be fully dressed and accessorized from top to bottom in a unique 50's style. Yes, these Vixen dresses will set you back but no more than a prom dress. This last prom season I did see a couple young vixens picking some crazy, unique, and fun patterns. When they throw a sale though they do it right, 40% off and than it was another 20% this last Monday. A black sweet heart neckline, with cherry pattern and a red bow waist was 36$. This last winter I bought a gorgeous cherry red jacket with a cinched belted waist for $50, wore it everyday and the quality is still their. Sorry fellas nothing for you, but honestly I like it like this, cause us ladies can get kinda wild when we shop. Staff are amazing and always look the stunning vixen part. West 39th street parking sometimes can be tricky but their are some small parking lots and street parking. I've always found something, and third Thursdays are worth a visit read more

I was determined to buy a dress. I tried on dress after dress, and the sizes were weird. I wear a large. The dresses squeezed my uppers too tight. I became frustrated. There was a cute little black dress, I should've tried that on, but I didn't want to spend the money required of me to buy it. Love that they have corsets. I should've tried it on, too. I should've tried on alot of clothes, but I was afraid of them not fitting me. But I love clothes like this. I really do. The place is cute. But the selection isn't as good as Donna's Dress shop, which I love. I thought the prices were a bit high. Others have become more luckier than I. It is worth the trip, if you're in the area, definitely check it out. It is worth checking back, for sales, and dresses. Seriously, these boutiques could make me a dress convert. read more

I found the selection wasn't as big as Donna's Dress Shop and I didn't even think about going into one of their dressing rooms. Love that they carry a variety of sizes and styles, and if you like something but you need it in a different size, they'll do their best to track it down. I love, love this retro boutique-style store!! It is the best one-stop shop for all your vixen, pin-up, rockabilly, and vintage-inspired must-haves in the KC area (located on 39th St). The selection is wonderful - from purses to pin-up dresses to home decor - everyone is sure to find something (or many things, like me) that you just can't live without. Melissa (such a sweetheart!) orders new and unique items regularly, so the inventory is updated frequently, which is extra special. There's also something for every price-range, it is so nice to be able to not just dream about owning some of these pretties, but to actually be able to walk out with some! Not something you can say of all boutiques of this type. Also a plus is the sale rack - it always has some great items - be sure to check it out! And oh my goodness, the interior decor is every retro vixen's dream - so pretty! Adding to this sweet retro-ambiance is original pin-up art that is also for sale by the very talented Krysztof Nemeth. I am upping Retro Vixen to 4 stars. I did go back later on when they had more stuff (and in my size). I ended up with a sexy, but also modest-fitting, retro-styled bathing suit. I also left with a cute pink and white polka dot halter dress. Melissa was very helpful again, and even got a bathing suit off of a mannequin on the wall, because it wasn't in my size on the floor. What to wear...one look at RV and I knew I had to go. As a fan of all things Rockabilly/Retro, they should just rename the store Nancy Vixen or perhaps, that's my stage name... Glory Rolls in place, I tried on three different dresses, a skirt and a shirt. I fell in love with a polka dot, halter top (Title for a new song, anyone?) dress. It was ridiculously flattering, I had to have it! Any of the shoes to in stock could have gone with this dress, the cherries, the leopard, the (sigh) wing tips? Sadly, none were in my size at this time. This perfect dress will go well on the back or front of any motorcycle. With a price of under $60, I couldn't ask for much more. A beautiful store with sizes up to 2X. (It is European sizing btw.) Don't look at the tags, just try everything. As I walked out of the bathroom behind the stage, I was hurrying not to miss you. I accidentally ran into/over someone as he into me. He tenderly grabbed my arm and asked if I was OK. I looked up. Breathless, I whispered, JIMBO? We attended the opening of Retro Vixen, this shop is pretty swanky with lots of very modern-retro look stuff in it. It is not as wholesome as other places, a bit more on the rock-a-billy front (not a bad thing just a thing). I was disappointed in the clothing and accessory selection (but half the shop was sectioned off for cake and punch, maybe more goes in the back). The shoes however were to die for! Always great to have new places to take the misses for fantastic shoes (yes I like shopping for her as much as she likes being shopped for). If your into retro looks, or want to switch up your style you should give them a look! read more

I finally made it into this place and I was extremely pleased at the experience. It's a shop for women's retro clothing so they carry a variety of mostly dresses. I enjoyed being greeted by a woman right off the bat and she asked me if she could start me a dressing room. The level of service at this place is top notch. It feels very much like a boutique clothing shop you'd find in Chicago or New York but without the snobbishness. I picked out some dresses and she put them in the fitting room. She also placed a petticoat in the dressing room too as well as a couple other dresses she thought would look good on me. It was so nice to be so well taken care of! They have a variety of sizes but it tends to run a bit smallish. This surprised me somewhat as there were a couple XLs that were too small for me. I am normally just a M/L so that did prevent me from telling a couple of my curvier girlfriends about this place. For me, I'm not normally a mod/vintage/pin up girl kind of girl so I didn't buy anything here when I came, but it wouldn't prevent me from coming back when I need something more stylized (Mad Men themed party anyone?) read more

Very cool place if you are a size 6 or smaller. I am not, but still had a blast here. I took my niece who is a size 1 and she found a ton of stuff and it all looked great on her. Prices are good and the shop owner is awesome. The clothes are super cute and even if you are not tiny they have purses and accessories that are cute and very cost effective. One of my most favorite places on 39th Street. The ladies are divine and super honest which is needed when purchasing clothes. They also own Vixen Pin-Up Photography which I heard is loads of fun! The decorum is retro-tastic which includes a retro couch and full length mirrors. The back of the store has 3 dressing rooms and the sales items. Accessories plague the store from sunglasses, to scarfs, shoes, stockings, swim suits, petticoats, purses undergarments, sweaters, etc. All items are retro inspired and new! Retro Vixen is affordable for the girl next door and the pinup vixens. Sizes vary from XS to 3XL which allows everyone to be welcome and shop. Should they not having something in stock the ladies are accommodating and uber friendly to discuss next steps. Every item I have purchased has been well made and has stood the test of time for at least 4-5 years in my closet. They also have a customer card where if you get so many purchases you will qualify for 25% off one item, score! Retro Vixen is awesome and even outstanding for understanding customer service. I got lucky. I had the day off and saw a post come through that Retro Vixen has (perhaps it is "had" at this point) some Pan Am bags and accessories in stock. Seeing as how I had no where to be and money apparently burning a hole in my pocket, I took a little jaunt over to the retro glam boutique to check these items out in person. Hard as I may have tried to walk away, I couldn't leave the store without some of the Pan Am items in tow. Given the vintage history on Pan Am (even though that show on ABC was ridiculous ... is it still on?), I felt that the items were well priced. Melissa (the purveyor of this fine establishment) said that if they sell well, she will get more in stock. Fire, Lindy Bop, etc... It was lovely to see Pinup Girl in person to see the quality instead of just lusting over them from afar over the internets. I stopped into Retro Vixen last week when I was in town visiting from LA. The shop is cute with a large selection of reproduction dresses from Lindy Bop, Pin Up Girl Clothing and Hell Bunny. I found an adorable black and red circle skirt with bats on the pockets... Just my style and only $45! The sales girl was adorable and super friendly. There's so much to shop, it could easily be overwhelming, but the shop is laid out in such a way that it's not, somehow. So much fun to browse! I did pay almost $60 apiece, but they were completely worth it. The people working here are very helpful in finding what's right for you and help you every step of the way I love supporting them so much.
