I've had a nightmare experience at 17 South Apartments in Charleston, SC, and I'm writing this in hopes that others don't fall into the same trap. Dryer Broken Since Move-In - Never Fixed From day one, my dryer was broken. I reported it immediately, but despite multiple maintenance requests, follow-ups, and promises, it was never fixed. I had to take my laundry elsewhere for months--despite paying for a unit with in-unit appliances as advertised. Not once did they offer a replacement, repair, or alternative solution. HVAC Issues - Ignored The HVAC system barely worked. I was either freezing or sweating through Charleston's extreme seasons. Again, I filed complaints and maintenance tickets--no resolution. Living in these conditions was not only uncomfortable but unacceptable for the price I was paying. Slapped With a $6,745 Early Termination Fee Out of frustration and health concerns, I made the difficult decision to move out early--but only because the apartment was not livable due to the unresolved maintenance issues. In return, they charged me a whopping $6,745 in early termination and penalty fees. Imagine that: they failed to provide working appliances and HVAC, and I'm the one stuck with the bill. BBB C- Rating is Deserved They currently have a C- rating with the Better Business Bureau, and now I understand why. They do not respond effectively to tenant concerns, and they seem more interested in collecting money than providing a safe, functional place to live. If you check the BBB or review platforms, you'll see I'm not the only one who has experienced this level of negligence. FINAL THOUGHTS I strongly advise against renting at 17 South Apartments. You'll pay for luxury, but get broken appliances, unresolved maintenance, and absurd fees if you try to leave. Management shows zero accountability, and their customer service is abysmal. If you're considering moving here--don't. Save yourself the stress, the money, and the regret.

Management pushed and made it my own issue to deal with time and time again. I have never been treated with such distain and dismissiveness in my entire life, especially by a management company. The constant stomping and shaking off the walls throughout the day/night for a year has left me absolutely hopeless. My health has greatly suffered due to this. Many nights I have had to leave to stay elsewhere due to the constant noise. If you value quality of life, I would never recommend to live here. YOU have to stay on top of the property management office to get anything done. My roommate and I were offered a lease renewal at one rate and, I formally accepted. There was then a massive turnover in management, and apparently my paperwork was never put through. I noticed that my rent had gone to "month to month", and when I went to the office to question them about the original lease agreement rate, they stated that I couldn't be offered that original rate. Even though they were the ones who fell through. Maintenance takes absolutely forever to get anything done. I had to go down to that office consistently to get people to follow up on our maintenance requests. Usually the excuse the would get is "we only have 2 guys, we're having issue finding help". Both of which aren't my problem, as they expect my rent on time every month. Our AC was not working for the last couple months I lived in there. And I didn't even bother contacting property management about it. This is also in a high crime area. My roommate had their car windows smashed in right in of our apartment building (we live right next to the property management building). When we reported it to property management, the manager was so rude and dismissive. Her reply was "well we can't do anything about that". There have also been more violent crimes committed in these apartments that I don't feel comfortable getting into on a public review. I would just really urge anyone considering renting here to do your research. Oh and before I forget! The trash compactor is always broken. They've gone so far as to ask us to " refrain from throwing out trash" until it's fixed . My heart goes out to those people who have to live across from it because it's just disgusting. When that machine goes down they bring out a huge trash dumpster. And people just throw stuff all around it. There are just so many examples of me doing my due diligence as a tenant, property management falling through, and then I am left to pick up the slack as a result of their inaction.
