We stopped by on a whim yesterday just before 2:30pm and got seated immediately. The inside is fairly large with a bunch of tables and booths along with a bar area. They have lunch specials until 2:30 and we put in our orders before then. Their menu is pretty big with a ton of options. Our food came out really quickly and everything was delicious and very reasonably priced. I would definitely come back!!

I have eaten at a lot of Mexican restaurants and the food here is the best. Their tortilla chips that they serve before the food are always fresh tasting and go very well with their somewhat spicy, but not too spicy salsa. Their burritos are a good mix of the proteins and veggies and rice, and I am particularly fond of the different sauces that they have for their burritos and enchiladas. They have a very interesting street food menu, which I like and provides food that are supposed to be much more similar to what you would find in Mexico. I do not mind that the Mexican food they have on their main menu is clearly Mexican American and even text Max, but I do like that. I have the option of getting food that is supposed to be somewhat more authentic. One thing I particularly like here that does not get much attention on the menu is that you can order aside of black beans. That is rather unusual for a Mexican restaurant and I like it because it does allow for me to add some extra heft and flavor to the food. Having the opportunity to order black beans as aside is something I like because it is a way of adding an extra, but not in a way that is very fatty or oily. Their cheese sauces are very good as a side, but sometimes I do not want something like that as a side. Staff is very nice here and I have gotten takeout several times without noticing any problems.

Guacamole and chips

Hand made guacamole is the unique touch that sets this place apart from any of their competitors. We were just passing through when our hotel's staff recommended Rey Azteca Monroeville as a Mexican food restaurant. We had a wonderful meal and are very impressed with the restaurant's clean, friendly atmosphere. This restaurant is in our upper echelon of unexpected dining experiences.

I will say the drinks here are fantastic. A good price for a huge glass of margarita. What I was disappointed in was the food. The way this restaurant is decorated makes it look super authentic. I had high hopes. I moved to Pittsburgh from NYC and I've been looking for an authentic Mexican restaurant. The quesadillas did not do it for me. The cheese was too sharp, tasted like a blend of American cheeses rather than Mexican cheeses. The chips were really good though and the tortilla itself was crispy and delicious. Literally was just the cheese. My partner Got another dish with cheese and it tasted completely different in a good way. Whatever cheese is used for the quesadillas, please try again with that. Otherwise, the atmosphere is nice, the prices are reasonable, and the service was OK.

Birria Pizza!

Food is always good. I tried the birria pizza and had a lot of leftovers. Make sure to save room for dessert!

I am not normally one to pick a Mexican restaurant for myself (I'm sensitive to spice & don't jive with a lot of traditional veggies used), but it was date night and I wanted to treat my husband to something delish! And boy am I glad we picked Rey Azteca - this place fully changed my mind about Mexican cuisine and I can't wait to go back. First, we came in on a Sunday right after they opened and it wasn't crowded (to my surprise) so we were seated right away and quickly got our drinks, chips + salsa. Not long later a man came to our table with his own guacamole station which we def took advantage of, we've never been to a restaurant where they made the guac fresh in front of you! I don't even like avocados but was happy I gave it a taste cause it was delicious. If you like guacamole at all I think it's worth it!! On to the food...I ordered flautas and my husband ordered one of their lunch plates which had an assortment of items. I have literally never had a flauta in my life before this. I usually stick to quesadillas or enchiladas, idk what came over me! But I'm SO GLAD it did. The food came out piping hot and as soon as I could dig in, I did. The flautas were one of the most delicious things I've ever consumed, easily. It was so good y'all!! The beans and rice on the side were also tasty & perfectly cooked, my husband agrees. I could only get through one of my flautas before I hit a wall, but my husband crushed his entire plate. We both really enjoyed our food and can't wait to go back. It's also still blowing my husbands mind that I *actually liked* my food, but I more than liked it - I loved it! Can't wait to go back!

Pollo Adobe & Vegetarian #1

I last reviewed Rey Azteca over 2 years ago, yet my family is ordering the exact same entrees 2 years later. Yesterday was my first time ordering here during COVID. It was quick and easy over the phone and we were provided with an order number. When I went to pick the food up there were people seated inside very spaced out. Our food transferred well to home. We ordered our usuals- pollo adobe, vegetarian #1and the kids beef taco, rice and beans. Everything was amazing like always. I need to order out from here more often. Also can't wait to dine in again someday soon. The staff are always so friendly and the food never disappoints.

Second time here but first review. We live in Shadyside and this is the place for Taco Tuesdays. We…read moregot chips and salsa to start; the salsas are on the mild side (we got roasted tomato and tomatillo and both tasted mild) so if you want spice go for their spicy salsa. The service here is excellent. In both visits the attentiveness has been perfect. The environment is musical, decorative, and darker. It is great for a date, a visit with friend, or a chance to scratch that taco itch. Now, their tacos are so good. My favorite is the chicken taco (sounds boring?); these tacos are amazing. Guacamole cream, kale, and spiced chicken. I also had chicken and chorizo, which is very good, but that chicken one is the bomb!

While flavor is fine, it's the same size you can buy at Chipotle for $3. Then, the queso fundido is bad. The queso isn't really melted, the flavor is missing, and they don't give tortillas to eat it with, just tortilla chips. For $14, this is really bad. The chips and salsa is again bad. The chips are so stale which is disappointing. Don't get the fajitas. I got the "mix 3" and ordered chicken and shrimp. There were 5 pieces of shrimp and a few measly, dry pieces of chicken. At $22, fajitas should also come with tortillas. But again, no tortillas are provided. Quite disappointing. Churros are decent and the chocolate ice cream is actually tasty (definitely store bought). Avoid this restaurant if you don't want to be scammed and left disappointed in the entire experience.

An objectively biased review. The most positively biased review possible. "Oh no", you're thinking, "*Bias*? Not in MY 5-star rating system." It's true. I admit everything. I am biased by how genuinely great Tepache is. By how *good* their chips are--crispy and flaky and perfectly seasoned. By their price-to-portion ratio, which takes me back to The Before Times--before COVID and politics and 6 dollar gas prices. By the quality of everything they serve which I have tried. All of it is top-notch. And by the good people who keep the place running. This is the thing that is biasing my review the most. Tonight, after a Grubhub glitch dropped our order into a wormhole, they were incredibly gracious and kind and offered to make another *and then drove it out to us*. It made our night good and not-hungry instead of bad and hungry, and for that we are beyond grateful. 6/5 stars. No, wait: 7/5.

These tacos are made Mexican style, meaning it comes with onions and cilantro with lime on the side. It also came with a side of grilled onions and potatoes. The potatoes were too soft in my opinion. I think if you were going for grilled side veggies, it's better to make it a tad crispy and browned. For the Taco Tuesday Special, I got the al pastor, steak fajita, and chicken tinga tacos. The best one had to be the al pastor because it wasn't dry and had lots of flavor. I opted for the red morita spicy sauce, and trust it actually has spice and kick to it.
