Came for a tour this evening. It's a small place but has lots of characters. Got 2 samples during the tour. Interesting information. Didn't realize Chicago had a Brandy distillery until 2 to 3 weeks ago. After the tour got the Rhine Hall old fashioned plus a mule with Apple, Pear Brandy, ginger beer, cucumber,lime. Try this place out! Good spirits and staff. I was surprised by how much I learned. A good experience.

Found myself here for girls night on a Saturday evening and was pleasantly surprised with my experience. Being as though I have never been to a brandy distillery, I honestly had no idea what to expect. The location is a little off the beaten path, with not all that much around it, however that adds to the charm. When we arrived the place was packed, which is always a good sign. We started with a cocktail before our scheduled tour. Drinks were a little pricey, but very delicious and strong. The tour itself was very intimate, just us! With that said it allowed us ample time to ask our guide as many questions as we wanted, and truly get a good handle on the brandy making process. It was very informative and I have new respect for the business. We look forward to coming back for some of their cocktail making classes and other events. I had to stop by this distillery. My favorite bar, Kumiko, uses some of Rhine Hall's bottles for their cocktails and I was unable to find any in California. I wanted to learn more about their options and how to use them. The distillery is a gem. The location is quiet and surrounded by industrial brick buildings. The interior reminds me of quaint wineries in Sonoma Valley and the staff is super nice. We enjoyed the brandy options that were more full-bodied. The cocktails were all well balanced with acidity, sweetness, and brightness. Come early and hang out for a while. It's a wonderful place and I'd highly recommend a visit. read more

I really enjoyed my time at Rhine Hall. Admittedly I was quite intimidated with the idea of making my own cocktails but after taking the "cocktail class" I walked away with MORE knowledge. The only con was there was no central air but aside from that there's nothing negative about this place. You get a history lesson on how the place was created. They basically let you drink as much as you want. As an option you can add a plate of cheese, crackers & olives. They offer plenty of spirits that are even flavored such as apple, mango or cherry brandy so it'd be hard to walk away from the class without purchasing something. A group of friends and I came to Rhine Hall Distillery recently and used a Gilt City Voucher. My first visit to Rhine Hall Distillery included 2 cocktails, a tour, and a tasting of one of their brandy's. The bar area wasn't too big, but there was a decent amount of seating available. Rhine Hall Distillery is a newer distillery in the Chicago community, so it was cool to learn how far they have come in such a short time. Our tour guide did an excellent job at explaining both the history of this distillery and the brandy distilling process. He was also very passionate about the products. I ordered their version of an Old Fashioned and also a cocktail called the "Dark Side" (mango brandy, black sesame, chili syrup, brandy). Both cocktails were smooth and unique in their own way. Before this visit, I wasn't really someone that was that familiar with brandy . Now I am more interested in trying more of Rhine Hall's products and other craft brandy brands as well. While fruit brandies may not be in everyone's wheelhouse, the folks at RH do a great job explaining the process and taste behind each one of their delicious products. I came here with a few friends for a cocktail making class a few weeks ago. Rhine Hall specializes in brandy and the staff taught us about their fermentation process and how their distillery is different from others in the area. We were taught how to make one cocktail, and had the opportunity to try a wide range of bitters and brandies in an effort to have a friendly competition (judged by the bar tenders) for best cocktail. However, I've taken cocktail classes at other distilleries and was surprised that we were only formally taught how to make a single one here-- especially for $65/class. There was a lot more lecturing/talking at us than us practicing on our own. Overall, the staff were very polite but I thought the class could be executed a bit better and be more hands-on. read more

I had never heard of this place until my girlfriend took me here on a mystery date. While not a huge place, it is worth visiting. We did the tour, which included a small sample of brandy at the end. The tour took us into the main distilling area, which features the still that was hand-assembled by one of the founders using a German guide book. We were also shown the back hallway and dock, which is where the equipment was brought in piece-by-piece because some of it didn't fit through the door. We also tried one of their house cocktails, which are hand crafted by the amazing bartenders. You could tell the amount of care they put into crafting them by just watching them make them. I got the old fashioned, which tasted complex, a little sweet, and very appropriate for the cold weather. The prices were also more decent than the nearby bars and restaurants. read more

I came with a large group for a bachelorette party and had a marvelous time! The bar is beautifully designed with simple and clean decorations, an old exercise bike that's perfect for pictures, a large entryway that's open to the quiet tree-lined street, and a view into the production area. We went for a cocktail class and kicked things off by trying the Free Parking cocktail - a refreshing lemon-forward cocktail with apple brandy. We then got a tutorial from Mark, that evening's bartender, and after learning some handy tricks of the trade made our own Free Parking. I've never made my own shaken cocktail before but felt like a pro - no spilling and I was able to crack the shaker open in one try. Mark was a great host and was charming as all heck. He gave us all a shot of oak aged apple brandy to toast the bride-to-be with and was kind enough to be our photographer. I wasn't a fan of the oak aged apple brandy in shot form (so raisin-y), but the regular version was super tasty in our cocktail. It would have been nice to have a little variety between our welcome cocktail and the one we made - we thought we got to try three different cocktails and while I loved the lemony goodness there were a few ladies who didn't make their own because they didn't enjoy their first drink enough to finish it. All in all, though, it was a great time and I'm glad we got to do something hands on while getting to know each other a little better! read more

My husband and I took a tour here with another couple. We got the tour from a Gilt deal (highly recommend checking that out). Parking is available (pay to park) and was easy to find. I wish we could have come to this place a lot sooner as it's a lot of fun, welcoming and great cocktails. The owners were also there this night and were a delight to talk with. We received some fun insight into the creativity and overall story of Rhine Hall. The cocktails are very tasty and really introduced us to how to incorporate Brandy for drinks. The flights are a great way to explore the different Brandy's and the price point is well worth it. I came here after buying a voucher through gilt city for a tour and drinks. I had been wanting to visit for a while. Although I have never really been a brandy fan I think that has changed. The tour is not really that exciting since the distillery is only about 1 room. If you have been on other distillery tours there isn't much extra to be learned. We were toured by one of their brand ambassadors/bartender Sarah and she did an excellent job. The tasting room is quite small with a bar and 3 additional tables. When we first arrived there were no seats available. Bar service was very friendly, but you need to be forward if you want service when it is busy. The mixed drinks were great. Also wanted to try the draft cocktail- was brandy with Apple cider when we were there. Was able to try the tasting flight for extremely reasonable $10, and it is a great way to decide which flavors you like best. Parking is free on the street. We booked a private class here for a bachelorette party and we had a great time. We started right on time and did a tour of their facility. The tour guide / mixologist was very knowledgeable and the story of the distillery was really cool to hear, and the pride of being a small business really came through. The class itself was fun - we learned what all the tools were, how to properly pour a recipe, etc while sampling product and eventually our drinks. We were given plenty of time to chat with each other and the pace of the class felt good. Such a lovely space and helpful staff. I'm mostly a beer girl and can be a little picky when it comes to cocktails. As in, I think 90% of cocktails are too sweet. So, rather than risking picking a too-sweet cocktail based on my limited knowledge of cocktails - and fruit brandy in particular - I decided to ask the bartender for a suggestion. After hearing my requirements, the bartender (I'm sorry, I wish I had asked for your name!) immediately offered up several suggestions off their cocktail list, and even offered to make me a custom cocktail with one of their bierschnapps. I took her up on the custom offer and loved my drink! If all cocktail bars had the level of service and knowledge you find at Rhine Hall, I could actually see myself becoming a cocktail drinker one day! I've never been a huge brandy fan. I wondered if it was some prejudice about Wisconsin, but upon analysis of my whey matter, that's not the case. But that changed with the first sip of a Rhine Hall Old Fashioned. Not the manliest-sounding drink, with its apple brandy core and maple syrup, tempered by classic Angostura bitters. They said, it's "alcohol forward." I still haven't figured out even what "fashion-forward" means; so I would describe it as being closer to the whiskey that Nick, the Pottersville bartender in "It's a Wonderful Life" served "for men who want to get drunk fast" than Clarence the angel's Flaming Rum Punch request. Served up with TLC by Chelsea, the belle of the bar, the brandy Alexandra, the hostess with the "prost"est ("cheers!" in German). My four friends and I hadn't gone to Rhine Hall to get drunk fast; rather we were there to learn some physics: the science of taking the crispy bites of crate-fulls of Michigan apples and turning them into sips of palate-awakening schnapps. Wow, what a change from the cheap, peppermint schnapps in high school. (My friends, not I, of course.) We learned a lot about science, about artistry, and even a little about family (It's an ex-hockey-player father/daughter family business, after all). Jenny certainly learned a little about "icing" from dad. (This fair-weather Blackhawks fan just re-learned that term the night before.) Our tour guide, Ari, is not only the not-so-mad scientist (he might have been before his psychology degree?) who manages the operation, from driving the harvest from Michigan, "c'mon backing" the truck into the loading dock, to cutting, mashing, fermenting and--be still, my foolish heart--bottling the sharp-tasting nectar at the end with the help of the mom of the family and her friends. He was our tour guide, and despite being interrupted with our barrage of questions and bad jokes (okay, mine), he was an A-one, fun tour guide--the Neil deGrasse Tyson of astroapplephysics. We wanted to buy the teacher a liquid apple for his excellence, but he had work to attend to. Jenny was also in the bar to answer lingering questions. We ended our tour with complimentary shots of apple brandy, and then purchased a flight of shots of their current products to pass around the table and sip. I'll confess that I'm still not a huge fan of the brandy straight up, but the tour was well worth the 10 bucks. I will probably be back to I belly up to the bar of the belle for another Old Fashioned, a perfect description of the craftsmanship that "still" delivers. read more

Rhine has peculiar hours of operation, and I lucked out when a potential business associate set up our first meet & greet for a Thursday evening. As the weather began to turn, and my fears of the meeting getting canceled grew, I received an email stating "Dustin, cold days like today are a good reason to drink brandy...and meet new people." and boy oh boy, I couldn't agree more. So I hit the icy roads, and drove over to Rhine Hall's very unassuming location. Based in Chicago's "Kinzie Industrial Corridor" it's in a neighborhood surrounded by mixed use industrial. You would not know this place existed, if you were not seeking it out. It's definitely a destination and such a pleasant surprise. Because of the snow and sub zero temps, we ended up being the only people occupying the bar for the evening. Jenny, one of the owners, treated us well. My friend ordered a tasting flight of all the brandy & grappa and had a hard time deciding which one was his favorite. He was happy to buy two bottles to take home with him, to do further research. I asked Jenny what her favorite house variety of booze was, and she recommended the oaked grappa. Made with grape mash locally sourced from regional winemakers, it was absolutely delicious. When we opted for a staycation, I started looking at local places to tour that were a convenient trek from our hotel and stumbled upon Rhine Hall. I'm not sure how long it would've taken Rhine Hall to pop up on my radar, but I'm glad it did. We arrived a little early and enjoyed a drink at the bar. They have a small, but interesting cocktail list; he went with the old fashioned and I went with the Bixby's Double. The bartender was helpful describing the drinks, which meant we each ended up with one we would enjoy. Our tour was approximately 10 people and hosted by Jenny, the daughter in the father-daughter Rhine Hall team, although the whole operation is a family affair. Having been on several liquor tours, there wasn't much that was new about the process, although it was still interesting to hear. What I enjoyed most was learning the Rhine Hall story, how one family's hobby turned into a thriving business and hearing how much heart they've put into their product. This operation consisted of 5 people bringing in apples from Michigan, making the liquor and bottling and labeling the product as well as tending bar. We were given a gift certificate for Christmas to Rhine Hall. We decided to take their Saturday tour and also try their cocktails while we were there. I'd recommend both. The tour was very interesting if you're interested in how fruit based spirits are made. It's an artesian operation so you'll be guided by one of the makers of the product. This is a hidden Gem! This distillery is a selfmade family business. Starting in Germany, Bavaria. Jennifer Solberg and her father discovered their love for homemade brand Schnaps (fruit brandy), made it in the backyard and years later brought the operation to Chicago. My husband and I booked a cocktail making class here at the distillery. Upon arrival, we had a really great welcome cocktail that they made for us. We were given a tour of the distillery and learned all about the family run business. It's actually a pretty cools story. It was also really awesome to hear about how they work with places like City Winery, Goose Island, Metric coffee, the Aviary, etc. After the tour we got a quick overview on cocktail tools and a little cocktail 101. We all made a basic cocktail on our own together. Then we were challenged to create our own signature cocktail drink. We were free to taste and try to combine anything on our own before we submitted our final drink to be judged. We made a few bad flavor profiles but we finally found one that we like. We mixed it up wrote up the recipe and submitted it. The staff there was a blast and we had a lot of fun mixing a few cocktails with them and our classmates. We couldn't leave without buying a bottle of the oak aged apple brandy. The evening was about 2 hours and was a ton of fun. I recommend this as something fun to do after dinner. read more

Rhine Hall makes their own apple brandy from local apples in their distillery space on the near west side. You can go to the distillery space for cocktails ($8), tours ($10) and to buy bottles (they come with their cocktail's recipes). You can also find their product at locations all around the city. I must say, Rhine Hall makes the best old fashioned I've ever had. It's almost a shame because I'm a bit spoiled now and the ones I used to get just pale in comparison. I also love that Rhine Hall sponsors a lot of really cool events around the city, like the Ancestry Quarterly release party or Chicago Reader spring cocktail party. They're a great Chicago brand who have seamlessly incorporated themselves into the community in just a few short months. Their space is oh-so-cool! It's ideal for date night or just enjoying their delicious house cocktails. I can't wait until this summer when they can open the garage door and turn their bar into an indoor/outdoor space. This is definitely going to be one of my go-to spots for enjoying the summer months. The people who work at Rhine Hall couldn't be nicer. We went in for drinks and spent almost the entire time chatting with everyone there, learning about the distilling process and their journey to opening up shop in November, 2013. She received a product drop-off during off-hours, and then helped us clean up everything afterwards -- and totally went above and beyond to ensure a great experience. Rhine Hall is an absolutely phenomenal distillery with great people, fantastic product development, a great story, and unique and delicious tastes. I stopped in to buy a bottle of the mango brandy and the coffee liqueur , and both of them were phenomenal. The mango brandy is a very special spirit and I've never seen anything like it. It adds a powerful and rich mango flavor without too much sweetness which would make it perfect in a split base margarita. The coffee liqueur , on the other hand, is the best liqueur of its class I have ever had the pleasure of tasting. The vanilla notes are complex and sweet at the perfect level, and there is a viscous and silky richness that just makes you want to keep sipping. I am very slowly enjoying my bottle at times on the rocks and at times straight. Do yourself a favor if you're in the area and support this fantastic local business by stocking your home bar or business with their products. Kudos to Rhine Hall! read more

I hosted a bachelorette party here. The event planner, Sarah, was really easy to work with. She answered all my questions quickly, and was very helpful throughout the process. We were able to rent out the space for 3 hours. We brought in our own food, decorations, and were able to open presents, ect without any problem. The bartenders were very pleasant and made us feel welcome. They also arranged for us to have a drink making class. On top of that, they make a good drink. I will go back just to have drinks.
