Rice Bowl caught my eye when I was walking along Westfield Avenue one day. The exterior of the restaurant features a pagoda style structure along the edge and a sign that looks like it has been up for decades. Faded but charming in its own way, this place was a time capsule that I *had* to check out. Walking into Rice Bowl was an exercise in time travel. The interior has wood paneling making up the walls. There are a few tables to the side and the counter sits towards the middle (made of *more* wood paneling). Inside the counter are two windows showing shelves that I speculate may have once held candy/treats but now feature various Chinese trinkets (such as a Buddha statue). On one wall is a multi-panel Chinese carving, adding to the ambience. I grew up going to businesses like this in Manhattan's Chinatown (not to mention my Grandparent's house) so even though I had never been here before, it felt incredibly familiar. The owner is a really nice gent and he and I discovered we spoke the same dialect, so it was great to chit chat with him. I finally ordered and he went into the back where I heard the familiar sounds of cooking going on. I took my food to go and headed home. So how was the food? Well...there are some things that Rice Bowl does well, and others that are average. There are dishes like chicken/vegetable lo mein, shrimp toast and eggplant in garlic sauce which I really enjoyed. Other dishes however including their General Tsao's chicken and mixed vegetables were only okay. Now, normally this would put me off and I simply would not return. Well, certain things good - the egg rolls the BEST!!! Two times perfect - one time too much oil. What we ordered was good...but for some reason the food just did not feel like it was prepped or cooked in a clean restaurant - nor did it seem fresh. I did not pick up our order...but my husband didn't care for it and he doesn't notice anything. Surprised restaurant being passed down to family and it is like this? i miss the original Rice Bowl on Raritan Road - was definitely our once a week go to place for actually decades. Missing Avenue East and Lun Wah too. If the original owner ever reads this - please thank your daughter for teaching my son when he was three years old to perfect using chopsticks in 1987! Had rice bowl last night. We had fried dumplings, fries, egg rolls and vegetable lo mein. Nothing too crazy, but simple quick eats. $18+ for everything We picked up our food in 15 min. and honestly the place needs a little update. The wood panel walls and everything else is pretty outdated. I know what we ordered was greasy. But this stuff was super greasy. I've eaten at many Chinese places and this is by far the most greasiest. My lo mein was drenched in oil and soy sauce. The top of the lo mein was great and the vegetables are chunky. But when you get to the bottom it has so much oil and soy left. The dumplings come in 12 and they were good. Egg rolls are pretty big and filled up. I may try out the general tso or the sweet and sour chicken next time, since someone did mention it's the white meat chicken Lol read more

I read the reviews & decided to try the lunch special.. I ordered chicken & broccoli with fried rice. Unfortunately it was very bland. The fried rice was brown and the chicken & broccoli ugh..drenched in oil. I added ginger to make it edible. The egg roll was delicious. So I'm really disappointed that the food was not satisfactory. I will stick to Red Dumpling in Woodbridge.. or Edison Wok n'Roll on Inman ave. Food should taste fresh. read more

I've been eating from the Rice Bowl since I was a kid in the late 70s. The staff is very friendly and they always get the order right. The General Tso's chicken is my favorite- huge chunks of breast meat with no fat in a delicious sauce. No eat in here- only take out. I don't even think there's a bathroom LOL. read more

I have been coming here for many years and consistently get good service and great food.

So I came here for years as a kid, went into the Marine Corps and ended up in Southern California. Every year afterwards I would come to visit my family and one of the places we love to go to is right here at Rice Bowl for the best Jersey Chinese food! Sure you may think why can't you get good Chinese food in California? Well you can't, I just haven't found it and believe me I have tried. It's just not as good. Best Chinese food ever! Grew up in Clark and used to go to the one on Raritan Rd in the shopping center. When that closed we ordered from here instead bc both restaurants are owned by the same family, or are somehow related (I'm pretty sure, the food is identical). Still the best Chinese food I've ever had. Through all my years moving around and whatnot, I have not found another Chinese restaurant that compares to the Rice Bowl. The best Chinese spot in the area. Most Chinese spots are very similar and not stand out much, however this place has a down home and authentic feel to it. There is no delivery which is a pain but I skip delivery from other paces because it is worth it. Its real chicken!!!! This place is gourmet all the way with great, friendly service. I always order from here when I am home. They have a great orange chicken dish with fresh orange slices, not those dried disgusting peels that most places use. The chicken pieces in all the dishes are large, lightly breaded real white meat pieces that are always excellent. None of that mystery meat here. I have been to a lot of Chinese restaurants and this place is the best by far, and the most gourmet while still being priced very reasonably. Wow, this place must have been sold off or has fallen under bad times! Doing non-profit work in the area and suggested getting takeout from here given my good experience a few years ago. However, do not plan on going back, ever! - Pork w/ Mixed Chinese vegetables was packed into the old style quart container. Good points for the amount of food, however, it was all very dry w/out much sauce. They also did not make it extra spicy, even though it was requested. - Kung Pao Chicken was probably one of the worst I have ever had. I understand using brocolli stems as filler but a 'soup' with peas and shredded water chestnuts w/ a few pieces of chicken and peanuts is not acceptable. This was more like a soup and didnt even pack the new style quart (still debatable on how much these hold) container. They also did not make it extra spicy, even though it was requested. - Beef lo-mein was uninteresting and mostly noodles. There were very little if any vegetables and not a lot of meat. - Hot and Sour soup was the worst I have ever had. It was a gelatinous mess w/ way too much corn starch or flour added. They also appear to have used ground meat instead of actual shredded Chinese pork. They dont deliver either. This is a good thing for yelpers. Stay away. read more

So disappointed with this spot after hearing rave reviews. I ordered beef with broccoli for take out and brought it home. Started eating and noticed the beef was barely cooked and red inside so took it back. They told me that was how it was cooked there and that nothing was wrong with it. It was disgusting and chewy and instead of offering to cook me up new one they claimed they couldn't do better than that and so just returned the purchase... they couldn't bother to cook it more and were so stubborn about telling me it was cooked properly. First of all, I'm not one of those Chinese food snobs that is comparing this establishment to "real" chinese food. All we were looking for was straight up, well executed, fresh, well-balanced classics. Wonton soup was tasteless, whereas the hot and sour soup tasted like sweetened pork gravy (completely inedible...and for me to say it was inedible, should say it all.) Pork fried rice was a gelantious mess with minimal pork. Pork, with rice fried into it. What's the hard part...Fried dumplings were burnt dough balls, General Tso chicken, while made with all white breast meat, was dry and stringy, like they had taken frozen chicken fingers, chopped them into big cubes, then sauced them accordingly. live in town and this place is a real gem....three dishes you can't go wrong with...the general tso's chicken is 100% white meat...best I ever had....the roast pork slices appetizer has a broth that you can drink as soup...so tender....but my go to dish every time is the chef's special spare ribs in black bean sauce...I have them make it extra spicy and I swear this dish is absolutely heaven on a plate...real authentic Cantonese at the Rice Bowl....those 3 dishes you simply can't go wrong with read more
