Dim Sum II Chinese Restaurant is located in one of the main shopping areas of Cranford. With the (apparent) loss of Avenue East, it is one of the few remaining Chinese style eateries in the area. I had not visited this place in ages. I was not avoiding it or anything, I just often passed it on the way to some other place, but recently I thought it would be a good idea to revisit this restaurant after 12(!) years of not having dined here. The first surprise was that this restaurant no longer has sit down service. It is take out out only now. I asked about this and was told that this is largely due to staffing issues. It is sad because the interior has a classic setting complete with some classic doors that have probably been there longer than I've been alive and diner style booths. It's a lovely space and having dined in it, I am sad people can no longer do so. That said, during both of my recent visits this restaurant has done some brisk take out business. Each time I went there were at least two other orders waiting for pick up and phone calls to put more in. I truly hope this is a good sign and points to this restaurant being around for a while. So what did I get? Here are some highlights: SHRIMP TOAST This is a classic Chinese take out dish that I used to have all the time when I lived in New York City. In the 90's I remember every Chinese take out style place had a version of it. However, over the years it has disappeared off most menus, so I was thrilled to see it here. Made of shrimp paste on bread and deep fried this appetizer was absolutely delicious. The bread is crisp while the shrimp paste has a meaty chew and the flavor is very savory. If you're a fan of this dish, this is a must get. STEAMED CHICKEN DUMPLINGS Very well seasoned meat inside a somewhat thick dumpling shell. You can have these steamed or fried. I went with steamed to be a bit healthier. They come with a nice dipping sauce making for a savory and chewy delight. CHICKEN CORN SOUP Sometimes you get soups like a chicken corn soup and you wonder where all the chicken and/or corn is. Not so with this one! Dim Sum II loads up their soup with plenty of corn and chicken and it is delicious. Great silky texture soup with enough corn and chicken to almost eat like a chowder. It's fantastic. BOK CHOI WITH BLACK MUSHROOMS This vegetable combination comes in a delicious brown sauce. The veggies are always nice and fresh and they use actual shiitake style black mushrooms that are substantial with a good bite. SINGAPORE STYLE CURRY NOODLES Rice noodles cooked in a wonderful curry sauce with a combination of meats including chicken and shrimp, this is a wonderful dish that you do not see that often outside of traditional Chinese restaurants. Often this dish does not have enough curry flavor or it lacks the proper amounts of shrimp or chicken. This version however strikes the right balance across the board. I've had spicier versions, sure, but overall this was very well done. I loved the food here and look forward to my next visit. I highly recommend it! read more

Our family ordered delivery tonight, we enjoyed every dish. The Wonton Soup is so good, the broth is not too salty and the wonton is soft and fresh. The Pork Soup Dumplings are the same, just the perfect balance of all the components, and again so fresh. The Bok Choy with fresh garlic, refreshing side to our dishes. Finally the House Special Chow Mein is an even mix of delicious, crunchy greatness! Our first time ordering the house made duck sauce, we'll never be able to any other duck sauce again, it is pure goodness. This place is take out only now. I ordered the chicken with garlic sauce combo. It said the chicken was spicy but that was not true. The egg roll tasted fresh and was crunchy and was very tasty. The pork fried rice was dry and didn't have much flavor. 1 out of 3 for me - that doesn't make me want to go back. I added lots of sauce on everything and could have used more but they didn't give enough packets in the bag. As far as the food goes I think it's just average. The people were friendly and the service was fast. It seems to be good in a pinch but I would try some place else. read more

This is our go to Chinese food restaurant in the area. We're generally very pleased although the wait has gotten longer (at least for take out) over the last few years. See pics of rice. Owners said they didn't know what it was, nor did they seem concerned. I even texted the photos. Most likely dead rice weevils (type of bug)/ weevil feeces. These are just some samples, but entire rice had it. Also felt like they were trying to put the blame on me, as if I caused it. They offered to bring a new rice white, but I would not trust another white rice especially from the same batch. Gracious thing to do would have been to refund us. When you crave Chinese, this is your decent lonsgtanding local go-to. Not great or near it but oh so consistent. All the basics and even some thai options. Efficient service, the owners always there, lots of take-out. Clean, quiet. Get the brocoli with garlic sauce, the ribs, hot and sour soup, egg rolls, general tsao. I always enjoy Dim Sum II in Cranford whenever we ate at the restaurant pre-COVID. they are pricier than the other Chinese restaurants in town and it's usually worth it. I ordered Lo mein, General tso's, and wonton soup a few months ago and it was fine. Today I ordered pad thai and oh my! The Regular Pad Thai and is so very bad and I don't ever remember anything this bad from Dim Sum II. It's over, over-cooked noodles that are so soft they're almost mushed together and dry, the sauce taste like sweetened ketchup, the shrimp tastes frozen, and the chicken is bland but their is some oil added for flavor? I am nauseous and grossed out after trying a few bites. I picked out the chicken for my Capt. Jack (Jack-Chi) then I threw the rest away. It's inedible. I also got a shrimp eggroll which again I can't believe how bad the egg roll is. It's literally an undercooked egg roll wrapper (not fried enough) with raw undercooked cabbage andwith 3 little shrimp. It's gross and I can't eat it. Now I'm really nauseous. I also got short ribs (rib tips) with black bean sauce for $8.95 and it's 1/2 of a small (pint) soup container with little chopped up pieces of rib tips, green peppers, red peppers and a brown gravy that is not black bean sauce. It's hard to eat because you have to pick out the cartilage and bone and all your taste is green peppers. I know rib tips have cartilage and bone but I hoped for the bigger pieces so you don't have to worry about the tiny pieces of bone. I took a few bites but it's not at all black bean sauce and all I taste is peppers. What happened DIM SUM II Cranford? I don't understand why it's so bad. I will try DIM SUM II again maybe.... But only if I eat at the restaurant. I'll never order Pad Thai, shrimp rolls or rib tips here again. read more

Food is authentic and very good. However, it's disappointing that because of the pandemic you can only get take out and not dine in. Now that Covid restrictions have been lifted, they may , in time, allow dine in again. I've gotten the chicken chow mein combo, as well as, the sautéed broccoli and bok choi and both are fantastic. Little Chinese spot in Cranford. I've been to my fair share of Chinese food restaurants in my day..something about shrimp and broccoli . But I will say. The amount of shrimp you get in the lunch special is impressive. Normally youll get 5-6 bigger shrimp and a heap of rice and broccoli. Not here, so much shrimp, and yummy too. My family has been eating here for over 10 years. I've never had anything less than fresh quality, Chinese food here in ample portions and priced fairly. I don't understand how people can leave one star reviews because of a single experience and not realize the negative impact it can have on a small family business. We've tried other area Chinese restaurants and always return to Dim Sum, the friendly staff and reliably good food is not something to take for granted. read more

This place is the reason not to trust overall Yelp reviews. The reviews are highly overrated. So according to the reviews it's supposed to be the best Chinese place around but after sampling a large batch of orders. It is quite mediocre and startling bad. Haven't had really bad take out in a long time. But here it is. Ordered fried wings and it was bland under seasoned. The chicken seems poor quality, not much meat on it and it was very dry. The inside lacked any chicken flavor or juices. The shrimp with snow peas was awful. Shrimp tasted like overly thawed meat. It was mushy and no bite at all. The snow peas are so soggy like from a can and I was not late for the pickup. I saved the worst for last, the beef and broccoli. Omg it looked like sloppy Joe and broccoli. Now I am not here to trash the place, they served me bad quality ingredients and poorly cooked food. I hope they improve and get better since it is part of downtown Cranford. Wouldn't want a bad Chinese place to drag the town's image down. The other 2 nearby take outs are better. It is officially the worst eatery in Cranford. read more

Used to loooove this place. Me husband had their peking duck from them few times in the past (over 3 years ago) and loved it. decided to get it again. Duck was terrible, two overcooked drumsticks and a small piece of overcooked and dried out breast ($29). I ordered shrimp pad thai- overcooked noodle, 5 small shrimps and tiny slice of lime. Local Gluten Free foodie finally found a decent Chinese take out joint and this girl is happy. We decided on a Sunday night that my family and I ( who half of us is GF) wanted Chinese food. It's so hard to find gluten free Chinese restaurants but we lucked out and were pointed in the right direction. I called to place our order and they were very very busy. That's always a good sign. So I kept calling until I was finally able to get passed the busy signal. Finally I placed my order and got pork dumplings, boneless spare ribs, chicken and broccoli and pork fried rice. All entrees were Gluten Free. Everything was super fresh and hot. Portion sizes are very generous and good quality. All of the staff was very knowledgeable and friendly and made me feel comfortable ordering the food and eating the food. Our whole family truly enjoyed our meals and are happy to of found this place. We can't wait to go back ! My only complaint is I wish they labeled the take out food to indicate gluten free just as an extra precaution. read more

FINALLY!! It's taken my husband and I four years of mediocre or just bad chinese takeout to find our spot! Dim Sum II was fantastic. The menu has a vast selection of Chinese and Thai. The restaurant is easy to find and the people working were so friendly. Most importantly- the food was delicious! Crispy beef had so much flavor. Wonton soup and pork dumplings were delicious. Used to like this place, but it has gone totally downhill. Ordered soup and a roast pork combo for pickup, told 30 minutes but took 45. Ok, the new Covid service model, I get it. The soup was clearly packed well before the combo, so ice cold. And the crunchy noodles were completely stale. Dim Sum is a great restaurant located on Main Street in Cranford. The owners are very friendly and provide great service. Although this restaurant has not been updated in years, there is something about it that you don't mind. Every time we come here all tables are full and the people seem to be really enjoying themselves. Dim Sum offers a great lunch menu which we love taking advantage of, however if we do dinner the prices are still great. I'm a sucker for ordering the same exact thing at any Chinese restaurant...not in one sitting of course ;) (chicken and broccoli in brown sauce, egg roll, wonton soup, steamed or fried dumpling, white or pork fried rice, ribs, veggie or pork lo mein. All of those items are fantastic and are huge portions, I mean 8 dumplings?! Unheard of. 4 stars for that alone. Would highly recommend chicken and broccoli, pork fried rice, and steamed dumplings. The wonton soup dumplings look and taste homemade, too. I found myself in this neck of the woods and was loathe to drive all the way to P.F. Chang's or wait until Sunday to ride up to Manhattan to scratch my Asian food itch. Luckily this place popped up on my "Find Me Gluten Free" app. It's celiac friendly so it's safe! They have a great assortment of dishes too! I just wish they had gf egg rolls. We got takeout for the first time - I was impressed with the food you could tell it was super fresh and it was better then your typical Chinese take out! Only thing I was a little upset about was they forgot a meal of mine and I called and they told me I would have to wait for over 30 mins for them to prepare the order THEY FORGOT and they wouldn't deliver it after I had to wait an extra 15 min for my food in the rain so wasn't happy about that part, but every Resturant has their days I will definitely give it another shot. read more

This was our first time here. The waiter was very friendly and efficient. Continually came to refill our water and tea. We love that type of service. The restaurant is plain but clean. Good portions although I like when the General Tso's is bigger portions of white meat. The only drawback is that you have to pay cash if you use a coupon, though I can understand why. Disappointment is an understatement. We went here looking for dim sum. This is NOT a dim sum restaurant, they sell dim sum as appetizers. We contemplated just ordering food but all wanted dim sum so everyone ordered a bowl of soup. Three hot & sours, a miso and a wonton. My friends who ordered the hot & sour and miso soup said they were ok. However, my wonton soup was basically hot water with two really thick wonton wrappers formed into a dumpling. The filling was literally the size of my pinky fingernail and the wrapper wasn't even cooked all the way through. Had another great dinner at Dim Sum II! This is the best Chinese I can find in the area that's as close to NYC style Cantonese food. We had wonton soup that's in a delicious broth, steamed pork dumplings, meet sticks, scallion pancakes and we tried something for the first time (here at least) the Thai Pineapple Fried Rice. It was actually pretty good for a Chinese place. For our entree we had lemon chicken which was a fried breaded chicken with sauce. We come here a lot. The food is always good. read more

Like many Chinese restaurants, Dim Sum II started to offer Thai dishes, as Thai has become so popular. Siam Inn, a block away, is much better choice for Thai, but Dim Sum II is a reliable neighborhood Chinese option. Generous portions and reasonable prices help account for its staying in business while much trendier neighborhood places have failed. It is also very close to the Cranford movie theater, which can be very helpful. Those looking for upscale surroundings for a date or otherwise, should try Cathay 22 on 22. Those seeking more authentic Chinese food should try Sichuan Dynasty in Westfield. read more

Found this place by accident. The delivery was really quick, which was awesome! And the food was very good. I ordered a chicken and broccoli with white rice, an egg roll and fried scallops for my sister and I. We really enjoyed it! The sauce wasn't thick and goopy like you find in many Chinese food places now. It was a good CI sistency, the broccoli and chicken tasted fresh. Hazah - a gluten-free menu! I can't remember the last time my (50% Celiac) family went out for Chinese food! I was not a fan of the GF ribs, but the GF General Tso's Chicken was crisp, and I was thrilled with the GF pork dumplings. In fact, we had 2 orders. My hubby was happy that we could all go somewhere he could have dim sum. He especially liked the Shrimp Shumai & Scallion Pancakes.
