Ohhhhhh man! Hidden GEM! I wouldn't say it's in the middle of nowhere, but let's just say, it's a bit out of the way. And a metropolitan area is not a close distance. We hit upon this place when we were driving from TX to FL. The gumbo? AWESOME. A tiny bit greasy, but oh, so delicious! The pork jambalaya? Get OUT of here! Couldn't believe the taste explosion happening in my mouth. DAMMIT, WHY AM I WRITING THIS REVIEW WHEN I HAVEN'T HAD BREAKFAST?! I'M STARVING NOW! We also had the oyster po-boy and man, let me just go ahead and be understated and call it 'tasty'. Go ahead and try it yourself. All this time Rice Palace was ONE exit from my house and I never ate there. Well I finally after a late night venture looking for a good meal and I was pleasantly surprised. It's visible from I-10, in a rather isolated area, on the long drive from NOLA to Houston. It's open 24 hours a day, and it's attached to a casino (and a gas station, if memory serves.) I pulled in on a rainy Monday night at 11:30 PM. The ambiance was very strange to me. It's dark inside and there is a checkerboard-tile floor. The dining room looks like an 80's-era drop-ceiling remodel, but I think the thing that lends the most weirdness is the glow of the slot machine lights from the other room, which is separated from the dining room by a gas station-style glass door. My style of dress stuck out a little bit (most of the clientele was what I think of as stereotypical 'lumberjack' Cajuns, whereas I'm standard big-city hipster) but the servers and the people at other tables were all friendly. It appears that there is a buffet option, but on this cold, damp evening I knew exactly what I wanted without even looking at the menu: Chicken&Sausage Gumbo, Rice, Cornbread, Coffee. The gumbo is, hands down, the best I have ever had. I prefer a gumbo that is earthy and pungent, with a fairly thin broth, and just a little bit of grease floating on the top. It was absolutely flawless. The rice was perfectly cooked also. It was soft but each stubby grain had a bit of "snap" to it. The cornbread was moist and heavy, but not sweet, and it also had a slight earthy flavor to it. On the way out, I was telling the cashier that this is the kind of gumbo that I always imagine I can get in NOLA, but nothing there comes close. She told me that NOLA cuisine is typically Creole (city food, expensive ingredients), and that their style is Cajun (country food, whatever ingredients were on hand). read more

Surprisingly delicious! From the outside, Rice Palace is connected to a gas station, which is initially unappealing. However, this restaurant serves great breakfast food along with other main courses. They also have a coffee bar! read more

Sure it is in a truck stop. Looks like a typical truck stop diner, but that is where the resemblance ends. There are plenty of smiling and friendly faces. Our server performed his duties well. I had the Cajun cat trap - fried catfish filet covered in crawfish etouffee, very delicious. While you can get the filet grilled the server recommended the fried which resulted in a pleasure full experience which the balance of all the different textures and flavors. The Sweet Wedges were a great surprise a crunchy but soft Sweet Potato wedge. Now to mention the homemade onion rings, another great addition to a wonderful meal. BTW, the chicken and sausage gumbo on the salad bar was loaded with large chunks of chicken and sausage in a very delicious roux. The restaurant smells like smoke. The seafood gumbo I ordered unfortunately had way too many shells in it, that it was hard to enjoy.

Look this place used to be our favorite! Literally there once a week. But I haven't been back in so long because the buffet is gone and the prices of the menu have gone up way too much! The food is good and never really had a problem with it. Love the staff and my family has formed a relationship with them all but I personally won't go because the only items I can eat (seafood allergy) are overpriced. read more

Quite a nice find! Service was friendly and efficient. When my husband told our server McKenzie that I wanted to try everything, she offered to bring some samples. But we were able to pick a few dishes without that but it was such a kind and unexpected offer. We split a fried shrimp po'boy, onion rings, red beans & rice with a side of cornbread, chicken & sausage gumbo, and pork jambalaya - all were very good. My favorite was the gumbo - delicious dark roux with a little heat, rich and not greasy. The onion rings were up there with the best ever - light & crispy. I prefer pinto to kidney beans but the beans& rice had a great smoky flavor. The jambalaya was top-notch even though it did not have the usual 'trinity' - tender well-seasoned chunks of pork scattered throughout delicious rice. All priced well - this feast cost us less than $20! We'll be back! read more

For the price, this place is superb. Home cooking done well. I'm from south Louisiana and this place has the best jambalaya and gumbo that I've ever had at a restaurant. I've been pleasantly surprised by everything I've eaten here. Wonderful flavor in every dish. Don't let the location (it's attached to a truck stop off of I-10) dissuade you. Great for families. Great sit down dinner with southern hospitality at a truck stop who knew. Had a cup of gumbo which was excellent. Also had the crawfish etoffee it was great spice on point and lots of crawfish in a creamy sauce the only negative was the rice at the rice palace was underdone. In a town where they claim to be the center of the rice production universe with their own rice festival I was disappointed. But not enough to score them lower than a 4 because the rest of the meal was so good. read more

This place is pretty much a truck stop with a convenient store and also has the rice palace connected to it. Last night I got the BLT Chicken Wrap with fries and omg let me tell you it was absolutely delicious. Probably one of the most tastiest wraps you can find while being out here on the road. If you are traveling on the 10 and need a nice quite place to stop with good food then this is most def the place. read more

My husband and I were driving and really hungry, so I pulled up a place nearby to have lunch. I saw The Rice Palace had good reviews on Yelp, so we stopped and gave it a try. The food was delicious, the service was fantastic, and our waitress was really nice. We both had the buffet and it was a lot of food and very tasty. We almost didn't walk in at first because it kind of looks like a truck stop restaurant. But, it was full of locals and we would stop again. read more

For a truck stop restaurant, this is really good (and convenient). I had a bowl of the pork jambalaya and an ice tea. The jambalaya had tons of pork and the bowl is HUGE! It can certainly be shared.....I could not even finish half. The rest of the menu is mainly burgers, chicken dishes and shrimp. Nothing too inspiring but great for a quick lunch. read more

Great little restaurant. Their steaks are great and not to mention their delicious sausage and chicken gumbo. A few of the waiters need an attitude adjustment but most of them are delightful. Only real thing lacking is a better variety of buffet items. Seems every time I go chicken is always on the buffet. With a huge bit of revenue being from the interstate, I imagine variety is not a huge concern. If you get the chance to stop here, order from the menu and you won't be disappointed. read more

We have eaten the Thanksgiving Buffet here for the last several years and it has always been fantabulous. Best to make reservations but not necessary if space is available. This was the worst experience of my life the food wasn't bad they messed up on my order I told no mayo add pickles they gave mayo and no pickles they toke 30 mins to bring me a sprite and almost an hour to bring a burger the service was TERRIBLE the scenery boring. Ordered food through the waitr app. When food arrived we were missing a salad (no big deal) so I called and spoke with the manager and explained what was wrong. His response is that I would have to pack all the food up that I ordered and drive to the restaurant so he could verify that the salad was missing before he could do anything. I explained to him it defeats the point in ordering and paying to have food delivered if I would then in return have to drive there to get a salad. His response was that was the only option so he could verify the salad was missing and if I didn't like that answer to call tomorrow and speak to the store manager and maybe he would give me a different answer...when I said I would no longer be ordering from his store if that's the only way he would fix it he just said ok and hung up the phone read more

It must have been bad meat because just throwing meat on the stove would taste better than this. This is conveniently located right off I-10 in Crowley. The menu offers a lot of choices! One of my favorites is the Reuben sandwich and grilled potatoes. The shrimp poboy is also very good. Sometimes I just eat off the salad bar which includes gumbo and one other delicious soup plus a variety of salad fixings. Excellent service. My only complaint is there is a strong smoky smell from the bar and "casino" (machines) next door. Otherwise, love to eat there!! read more
