My fiancé and I went here for Valentine's Day and absolutely loved our experience. First, our waiter gave us phenomenal service. So personable and helpful. I went out with crutches and a knee splint and he went out of his way to find something to support my leg so I could sit comfortably. He was also so kind to retrieve us information from the bar manager multiple times when we were trying to figure out what wine and beer we wanted to take home. In addition to the service, the food was great and the wine and beer pairings they selected fit with the food fit so well. Our mains were our favourite - the trout and osso bucco. Both came with amazing sauce, and sides were cooked perfectly. I would definitely go back to see what they have on their everyday menu to test it out. While in town for a five day stint, I ended up dining at The Rich Uncle 3 times! Was it the excellent craft cocktails? The program is definitely spot on, thoughtful, and expert. Was it the decadent comfort food? The lamb shank was juicy and punched and the burger was over the top and worth every calorie. Was it the five course Irish dinner that I was lucky enough to score a seat for? With a friggin coursed beer pairing? If I had to settle on one thing, it was probably the stellar service. The night we went they were short staffed and busy however the servers did an amazing job and we didn't feel this lacking in our service at all. Our server was very friendly and helpful. It was our first time and because of the name I was expecting something fancier however it was more like a pub vibe. We ordered the Caesar Salad to start. The description said it was made with baby kale but it came out with baby spinach. I'm sure it was a substitute but it was still very good. The dressing was delicious. We ordered the seafood pasta and steak frites. The pasta was okay however the "seafood" consisted of a few small shrimp and very tiny tiny scallops. The steak frites we ordered was supposed to be medium rare but it was more medium well. Our server agreed with us and immediately sent it back and got us a new one that was cooked perfectly. However, I'm not sure what they season the steak with but it had a strange bitter taste I couldn't get past. Our server is ended up discounting one of our drinks which was nice as we didn't ask for anything. All in all the food was just okay, service was amazing and the ambiance was unexpected. read more

Came here based on Yelp and it being walking distance to our hotel the weekend of 8/9/19, visiting our son who is a grad student at U Waterloo. Ate on the sidewalk patio. Nicely decorated with hanging plants. Loved the cigar box containing menus. Classy. Question who smoked all those cigars ... Son and I got craft beer, wife a girly booze drink, a couple each because we walked, loved them. I loved my lamb burger. My wife also liked her lobster roll, but said it is like all the others she has been eating lately. Does not help we recently spent a month in Boston. Cool coasters if you like those things (I do). If you're coming here make sure you just got paid ha. The interior is great and the different areas very cool. Staff is good. Drink menu is meh but better than most places. However. The food is very hit and miss. I went for dessert once and it was awful. I mean how do you make dessert bad?!? Like everyone had something different and no one liked what they got. Then I came after a show at CITS and have the mushroom toasts and they were delicious, albeit very rich. I would like to go back and try their brunch or when they have live music upstairs. read more

Came here for some snacks and late night drinks and loved the vibe here! Really cool decor and there was a piano somewhere in the restaurant that I think guests are welcome to play. Great service as well. It wasn't busy at all when we came on a late Wednesday evening. I had a whisky sour (delicious), and shared a plate of beef cheek fries. Loved the fries! The beef cheek was very tender and flavourful. It was also a pretty decent size (perfect for two). My friend got their burger and also really enjoyed it. We also got desserts to share and loved them!! We got a very unique crème brûlée that came with a rose sorbet (top notch!) and their carrot cake dessert (good but I probably wouldn't get it again). This guy Adam was power tripping and over the top. I hope owners realize this man is not suited to be a manager and has zero customer service/relations. Our party was probably a main factor of income for this establishment tn and i felt nothing but disrespected . We were super excited to try this place since friends recommended it. Arrived at 8:02pm. Were sat at the window with menus. We watched two waitresses attend to all surrounding tables and not acknowledge us for even a drink order. I asked the hostess if we were meant to order our own food at the bar since we weren't at a regular table and she said no. At 8:37 we gave up after the waitress came back to bring more drinks to the table right beside us but ignored us and went back to the kitchen. In watching some of the other tables, they had to go up and personally ask for their bills because they weren't seen either. Good: Service was pretty good, the food itself was really good (though the fries were a little soggy and way too heavy on the rosemary), and the cocktails were inspired and interesting. Also the owl mascot is fancy which is always a good thing. They can be a little slow (and the fries are a little eh), but overall this seems like a really cool place near the Walper Hotel and downtown Kitchener. read more

Really good food. My only real complaint is the french onion soup came in such a large portion it really should have been it's own meal. I couldn't finish my burger after and barely touched my fries. I felt like I had wasted money on food I couldn't finish. That all being said the food here is great, just be sure you know the portion sizes you're getting on your soups and appetizers. I was with my family at The Rich Uncle Tavern last night (Sunday December 04, 2022). Very good service. My youngest daughter and son had the fish and chips - these were ok. My oldest daughter had the Cesar Salad w/chicken, this too was ok. My wife had the Harvest Winter bowl. This was very dry, so a little less than ok. I had the Seafood Pasta. This seemed ok until a few hours later when I became ill. Violently ill. Ffs. Still suffering now, cold sweats, vomiting, diarrhea, extreme cramps, weakness, etc. Ffs. Not sure how you can screw up your job that bad, but someone really needs food safety training in that kitchen. Eat here at your risk, I certainly will push to see people not. Also, there were three elderly couples dining beside us last night. One of the elderly ladies also had the seafood pasta. Someone from this restaurant should find a way to check on her well being. There were four of us and we decided to try out what Rich Uncle was serving. We were impressed with the beer menu and each were able to get a brew we enjoyed. We ordered the steak tartar to start. It came in 3 pieces so two of us shared one. Our mains were the carbonara, the burger, steak frites and schnitzel. The schnitzel was burnt and 1/4 was inedible. The waiter suggested the steak be medium rare (which was going to be the order) and it arrived cooked medium. The carbonara was a spaghetti with a brown sauce that really didn't look too appealing. The food was bland. Nothing really stood out, except that they need to raise the bar here. It's in the location where Berlin used to be, so we were expecting more. I'd visit for drinks, but wouldn't recommend for food. I'm hoping this was because they are new. We are rooting for you Rich Uncle but you need to be doing better. read more

To start I must say the service was great and Carolyn our server was very attentive and professional. That being said my guest and I started with a few apps. Roasted Eggplant on crostini, wild mushrooms on toast with Chevre. The mushrooms tasted great but the eggplant that came was supposed to be warm was cold..underwhelmed with that one. We told our server Carolyn and she quickly returned with it warm. We then had a triple creme brie with croustinis. The cheese was only room temperature and looked like they had just pulled it out of the box and put it on the dish as is didnt even finish it. The next we had lemonthyme frites with a truffle aioli. The le.on rhyme was so abundant that it overpowered the aioli. Last but it least we had dessert. My guest had the Mousse. It came layered in a glass. The middle layer was like a jello pudding pop so jelly like it was not appealing. I had the Creme Brulee with a lavendar ice cream. The ice cream tasted soapy and bitter. The brulee was the only part I enjoyed of it. I must say I do hope they were just having a bad day because $100 for a meal that was so disappointing is outrageous. I will give them one more chance but it would a surprise if it was stellar. read more

So we decided to just get the bill and leave . The service seems very pretentious and would never go back! So disappointing! Wouldn't recommend it . read more

Hosted a private event in "The Study" upstairs. Great comfortable venue for socializing. Our guests loved it! Excellent and very accommodating service and we were very happy with the food, especially the cheese boards and appetizers. Would definitely use again and recommend. read more

We went here for the first time and loved it. The food was good, our server Adam was outstanding and when we asked for a couple "adjustments" to the menu we were accommodated. We visited the Rich Uncle on Wednesday evening this past week. This was our second visit to the Rich Uncle and like the first visit the service was extremely disappointing. Friends our ours were celebrating their 20th wedding anniversary and as a group we decided to give the Rich Uncle another try (I was apprehensive after my first visit but thought perhaps they deserved another chance). Our friends showed up in the wedding gear they wore to their wedding 20 years ago and all the patrons of the restaurant were very sweet in congratulating them on this milestone. The staff of the restaurant however were less than stellar, leaving us all with a bad taste in our mouth. When I ordered the beef tartare the server asked me "how would you like that done?" Well last time I checked beef tartare was only really prepared one way which is raw. Most of us had our appetizers and mains arrive at the same time, which was frustrating as the whole idea of an appetizer is to enjoy it before the main arrives. The couple we were celebrating ordered a charcuterie board which they said was the worst charcuterie board they have ever had (it was sparse with only meat and bread - no cheese or other accompaniments). Since all of us except the couple we were celebrating had their appetizers and mains arrive at the same time we were all finished before they got their mains, so we ended up sitting there for about 20 minutes waiting for their food and continuously asking for it. Once it arrived finally we all sat there and watched them eat which I am sure was uncomfortable for them. These are not the memories you want on your 20th wedding anniversary. The other thing that I found very unfortunate was that this would have been a great opportunity for the Rich Uncle to shine in the area of customer experience. Having a couple come in and choosing your restaurant in their original wedding gear to celebrate 20 years of marriage would have been a fantastic Instagram post promoting the restaurant (totally free advertising, seems like a no brainer). A glass of champagne or prosecco on the house so that everyone could do a toast would have been a nice gesture that would have left us all with such a nice impression would have been a lovely gesture. We were at Lokal earlier for cocktails and they gave them a bottle of wine which was so thoughtful and they told everyone they knew about the kind gesture that will never be forgotten. Instead we literally got some of the worst service I have experienced in years. Needless to say, I gave this place two tries and I will not be back. I work in customer experience and this place needs some serious help in that department. read more

I really liked this place, I think it deserves 4.5*'s. ok it is new and has a few hiccups to work out, our butter was to cold to spread... not sure u can deduct points for that. 2 of us had great beers, charcuterie (pretty wow, but would like options for mustard and not jus seeds, salt cod gratine( very wow) seafood platter( nice assortment, fresh, generous... what would i change? Add some cocktail sauce for shrimp... such small refinements are needed... and that my opinion, perhaps the chef has considered these and does not want to be like every other place, trout pate' ( ok, it was wonderful but comes with a hard crust of animal lard? Perhaps duck? Im not refined enough to eat that but once removed i would have fought you to the death for the trout, lastly we had the Halibut( the menu description does not do it justice, extremely well conceived and executed). Overall its excellent, for a 30 day open, gastro tavern with intricate flavour profiles and premium ingredients its well on its way to being a "best bet". Even the welcome at the door was so warm and inviting. I had never gone to this place, but someone from work recommended it. So glad I checked it out. Service was great - drinks were perfect - food was very good and the ambiance EXCELLENT! Loved and will definitely be going back for more of that hospitality. read more
