Dr. Richard Nguyen was originally referred to us by a friend who is an anesthesiologist, and we are incredibly grateful for that recommendation. In the spring of 2025, my husband, Jamie, needed to have his gallbladder removed after experiencing persistent problems and inflammation. His surgery was initially scheduled for about a month later, but when his symptoms continued to worsen, we contacted Dr. Nguyen. After discussing what Jamie was experiencing, we decided it was best not to wait--and it was a good thing we didn't. Dr. Nguyen performed the surgery the very next day at Good Samaritan Hospital. Dr. Nguyen is not only an expert in his field, but he also has an exceptional bedside manner. He was attentive, reassuring, and continued to follow up after the procedure. Jamie recovered wonderfully. Fast-forward to September 2026, when Jamie developed severe abdominal pain and went to the emergency room at El Camino Hospital. Testing revealed appendicitis, and we were so relieved to discover that Dr. Nguyen was there and would once again be performing his surgery. Jamie has endured several serious health challenges over the past few years, including vestibular migraines and open-heart surgery at Stanford for an aortic aneurysm, which required part of his aorta to be replaced. Needless to say, he has been through a lot. Seeing Dr. Nguyen immediately lifted his spirits because he knew he would literally be in the best hands. Jamie is currently recovering in the hospital, where he is being monitored because of his medical history, but the surgery went extremely well, and we are confident he will have another smooth recovery. Dr. Nguyen came highly recommend to me by a friend of mine who is an anesthesiologist. Dr. Nguyen office is located on the second floor, stairs and elevator are available. His staff are super nice and very responsive. The waiting room very comfortable and stylish at the same time. "Now for the good part" I came in for what I suspected was a recurrence of a hernia. After consulting with Dr. Wynn and him checking me out; he was not confident that a hernia was my problem so he ordered a CAT scan with contrast. "Because of my past procedures" After getting the results back he informed me that I did not have a hernia and that the cause most likely is from scar tissue. Dr. Nguyen repaired a nightmarish hernia situation for me; my original injury was in late 2019, and due to lockdowns, surgery in general not being allowed, etc., by the time I was able to get it repaired, the damage was severe. Repeated attempts to rectify in the years afterward were not effective, and my quality of life was severely affected. Dr. Nguyen performed robotic-assisted surgery to address the situation, and while the repairs were extremely extensive, incisions were tiny and the healing time was brief. Nothing but great things to say about Dr Nguyen and the care he provided me. I was 90% certain I had a pretty bad inguinal hernia and was eager to get it repaired quickly. I researched him on-line, called on a Monday morning, saw him the next day (Tuesday) and got surgery scheduled for the following week. Dr Nguyen repaired the hernia on my right side and also found one on my left side (repaired that, too). Outpatient surgery with Dr Nguyen using the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System at Good Samaritan. Summary---- Condition: Inguinal Hernia Insurance: Anthem HMO First day of visit meeting Dr. Nguyen: 8/31/21 Pre-Op: 9/17/21 Op: 9/20/21 After Op appointment: 9/28/21 Full recovery: not yet but at 90% on 10/30/21 Details Dr Nguyen was my life saver! On 8/19/21, I reached to the medical group and complained about the previous surgeon, and then I looked up yelps, and found that my insurance and medical group will accept Dr Richard Nguyen, so I called his office and talked with Brooke, and she took some of my info and then confirmed they will take my insurance, and instructed me to contact my PCP to get referral, and I followed Brooke's instruction, contacted my PCP and obtained approval and the referral confirmation number, and then called back to Brooke, and she then confirmed I am all good and then I can meet with Dr Nguyen on 8/31/21, also Brooke gave me an estimation on how quick I could have the surgery, and actually quicker than expected. During the day of meeting with Dr Nguyen, he did a little physical examination, re-confirming that's an inguinal hernia, then we talked about the procedure, and Dr Nguyen answered all my questions, told me what complications I may face, and then how the pains will feel like, and what I will expect after the surgery, and how the after surgery appointment will look like. On the same day, Brooke out there in her office, confirmed which hospital will take my insurance, and got all the paperwork prepped, so she confirmed me the date of presurgery, and the date of surgery, and then I was all set. On pre-op, another lady I forgot her name, and she was very helpful as well, given me all the instructions and info about what are more likely to be happening after, and then with all the paperwork, I went to Good Sam for pre-surgery check ups. By the day of operation, I just waited until Dr Nguyen show up after checking in, then met with anesthesiologist, and just a few minutes, the nurses sent me to the op room, then after some little chatting, I found I woke up in a waiting room, without any zombie apocalypse happening, but with some pains on the wound sites, then nurse injected some pain control per my request, and I suggest you reader(s) wait after the first dose, because it seemed not working and I requested the nurse to inject another, and that thing kept me wanna puke for like 5+ more hours!!!! Suggestions before and after surgery Lose as much weight as possible because you don't want your small intestines overworked and expanded when that dropped out from the hernia, and by losing weights, your tummy will have more spaces for laparoscopic, and no need for open surgery. Prepare more fiber supplement products, stool softener, lax, chia seed as supplement, and then magnesium citrate as last resort if no bowel movement after 2-3 days. First 2 weeks, don't even do morning body stretches! By the fourth week of me, I felt I started back in one piece, and by the end of the 5th week, I could feel like 85%, and now is the end of the 6th week, and I am feeling like 90% Just keep in minds, don't overdo. What happened before I got the care by Dr Nguyen - below I was with first confirmed inguinal hernia on 7/1/21, referred to a mandarin surgeon across valley fair, extremely rude the receptionist there, kept delaying my treatment, and then messed with the scheduling and picked the hospital not taking my insurance, and I asked to get update while they were getting approval from medical group, and then I was told they (across valley fair) would not give update! And that's the turning point for me to move on and looked for Dr Nguyen even I might have to wait a bit longer! I wasn't regret to go to Dr Nguyen, and I am very satisfied with Dr Nguyen's and his teams' attitude, and helps on my conditions! read more

Horrible service, long wait times, over 20 min in the waiting room. See the doctor, sent for a CT scan and NO ONE called to set a follow up appointment. I finally reached out to schedule a follow up appointment which was scheduled as a phone appointment two weeks out so over a month after my scans and the day of the appointment no one called, so I called the office and lo and behold they didn't have the appointment on the schedule. My 8 year old is more responsible than this shit show of an office. Oh and the Dr. himself BARELY examined me before rushing off to his next appointment. Waste of time and money. read more

I didn't meet the requirements for insurance to pay for my procedure so I paid out of pocket and it was worth every single penny. You can also finance your procedure with care credit. A bit of a disappointing experience from a medical establishment. I was supposed to have hernia surgery with Dr. Nguyen. For my preop appointment two days before surgery I saw only his assistant (not sure if she is a RN or an admin.) She handed me the usual paperwork together with referrals for some tests. I asked twice about any Eliquis-related requirements. No response. Late afternoon after I was done with all my tests and got home, she called to let me know we need to postpone the surgery because of Eliquis. After a while another phone call telling me after (!) consulting with Dr. Nguyen that I only need 48 hours before surgery without Eliquis, so I can go ahead with the original schedule in two days. However, I already took the pill that evening and that has cancelled the option. Of course, she was glad to reschedule the surgery at which point I said I needed to reconsider and decided of course to move to another surgeon. As I said: "unprofessional" or "sub-professional" and I include both Dr. Nguyen and also his staff. read more

Dr. Nguyen did an emergency gallbladder removal on my husband in June. After the surgery, he came out to talk to me and told me clearly what he'd done. As for the surgery itself, it was a great success. The only scar I can see is a tiny nick under the chest. And after a day's recuperation (mostly from not being able to rest in the hospital), my husband was up and working at home, and it was all I could do to keep him from going out to business meetings. My husband didn't have to take any pain pills once he was out of the hospital, and he has had no after-effects at all. The office is a bit slow on billing though. We didn't get a bill for our (post-insurance) share of the surgery until 3 months later. That could be a plus if you need to be setting aside money to pay, but if you have funds (like an FSA) you need to use by the end of the year (and it's getting close), you may need to call them and ask them to bill faster. read more

Dr Nguyen stitched my son's eyebrow closed afterwards split it open on a park bench. He was kind and supportive to my husband and myself. He listened to our concerns about scaring and infection. I was in the room the entire time with my son and Dr Nguyen talked to my son throughout the procedure. He even had a popsicle ready for him afterwards. I just had my last post op with Dr. Nguyen for my bowel resection surgery. I had gone to the ER and found out I had an obstruction caused by adhesions via endometriosis. The hospital wanted to do surgery right then but I wanted to do some research. I looked at so many reviews and talked to multiple drs about this. I knew I wanted a minimal invasive surgery too. I had a great consultation with Dr. Nguyen, who talked me through each step (best case to worst case scenario). I felt completely comfortable talking to Dr. Nguyen and more importantly having him as my surgeon. He is a very caring doctor and very happy I did my research. I also have to say how sweet and helpful all the staff is, all 3 of the women there are wonderful and so easy to talk to. The office was nice and clean with great covid protocols as well. I saw Dr. Nguyen regarding a lump on my left lower abdomen. A week later, Dr. Nguyen performed a Laparoscopic repair utilizing a mesh for reinforcement to seal my inguinal hernia. The surgery was successful and there was some pain over the next 48 hours after the surgery, but not painful enough to require consumption of the prescribed hydrocodone acetaminophen pills. Dr. Nguyen has been my surgeon for two very complicated surgeries. I have complete confidence in his surgical skills. The first surgery I had with Dr. Nguyen was when I was 36 weeks pregnant and had a small bowel obstruction. The second surgery was planned but still complicated; in fact, I do not believe there is another surgeon in the South Bay that would have performed it. Marissa on his team is also wonderful. My second surgery required a lot of pre auth for insurance and Marissa was on top of it. Dr Nguyen is one of the nicest, most knowledgeable and highly skilled surgeons I have had the good fortune to meet. He diagnosed what was needed, removing my long problematic gastric band and we agreed on a plan for a revision to a gastric sleeve, it was a collaborative decision where I was fully made aware of the expected process and future results, alternative options, and, the results have been great! Furthermore Marissa who works to make sure everything is coordinated, is fantastic and has a great proactive approach. They make a great team and do well of taking care of you and making sure you are taken care of. No nonsense, no arrogance, solid advice and results, lots of time to discuss plans and a good sense of humor. Highly recommended. 10/2016 Update : Dr Nguyen took care of my acid reflux problem that I have had for almost 10 years since originally having the band. I do not have reflux any more, at all. This was a highly complicated surgery due to scarring and damage caused by my band (adhesions etc).
