Tables were pushed together to accommodate our group. No other customers. Inside decor was pleasant. There was a plastic basket with a few napkins and some unwrapped knives and forks on the tables. Seemed unsanitary. Everything became a process for us as patrons. Coffee cups were tiny and refills were not gotten unless requested. Then wait. Refilling at one end of the group of tables and passing refilled cups down the table was the process. . Had to request coffee creamer. The ordering at either end of the table by 2 waitresses. Food delivery was chaotic. One cook (owner) who made the food - about 2 entrees at a time. Servers came out with plates held up in the air that we had to figure out whose breakfast it was. Dysfunctional. Several were not quite right - meat, egg prep or potatoes vs fruit. Being respectful, ladies waited a bit to eat since not everyone was served. When it was clear food service was not going to make it possible for everyone to eat at the same time, those who had food were encouraged to eat while their food was at least warm. Servers didn't provide or offer syrup, butter and sufficient utensils. At least we were able to visit despite the chaos created by the inept servers. My meal was one of the last served and I'd lost interest. By this time - more than 30 minutes after first ones were delivered - I felt awkward then eating when others were long finished and ready to leave. Owner came out and apologized for service issues bc of hiring/training. Small business enigma. She was more focused on explaining buffet type meals offered on different days and catering ops. Time to go and no checks - individual or otherwise. Had to pay at a counter where the 2 servers stood trying to attribute their order tickets to each of us after we listed our order. It's small but it's one of those places that remembers who you are when you walk in the door. Everyone who works at this local store is so friendly and very helpful. You would think being one of two grocery stores in town that the prices would be outrageous. Not true though! The meat market prices are very reasonable as well as the fresh produce. I'll be honest I was shocked because you figure a small town grocery store the prices would be higher than a big city store. The weekly sales are very impressive also. This is my new go to store.

I had known about the historic location in Elgin that claims to be the oldest barbecue spot in Texas. They have updated their processes to keep up with the times and in the last 15 years have begun opening new locations throughout Central Texas, with one in the Co-Op District of Hutto. I have had plenty of barbecue in my time, from chains to Texas Monthly recognized and Michelin star winning locations. I understand that not all barbecue is the same, but I also understand that barbecue served all day like at Southside Market can still be good. I do not think that is truly the case, though. My first experience was when Southside Market catered a holiday party for my work. I thought it was alright, but I gave them the benefit of the doubt, saying that it was catered. You do not judge a meal based on it being kept warm in a pan that was probably cooked at 8 am that morning or the night prior. It is not the same game. I went back a few months later for a birthday lunch and got their combo plate with sausage and sliced brisket. My first thought: This tasted like it was catered. The Jalapeño Cheddar sausage was decent but tasted a little too smoky, and the brisket really did nothing for me. The side of potato salad was good, but you cannot mess up potato salad that badly. Their mac and cheese was good, I think. I do not remember it whatsoever. I went back recently after almost nine months with a desire to get a baked potato with chopped brisket for lunch. I got it without sour cream but kept the rest of the toppings of cheddar cheese, chives, and butter. I took it to go, which I rarely do, but it was a busy day. I am probably one in a million because they have steady foot traffic inside on a frequent basis, but I wonder if the name is doing all the work. The staff was great and the space is well done and spacious, but the food actually has to be good to make that a plus factor. I have no idea if the food is any better at their original Elgin location, but I would rather go to Smokey Mo's across the tracks in Hutto because the potato is a good size and the brisket had a good flavor to it. So far, there are two reviews, but no photos or any real pertinent information. For starters, this is a very no-frills barbecue spot with no indoor dining just some picnic tables outside. In other words, it's best to get it to go. I got a sampling of their wares and was very pleased with the outcome. The brisket had a definite smoke ring and was extraordinarily tender. The sausage was not greasy and had a firm skin and very smoky essence permeating the meat. The half chicken was also very juicy with just enough pepper to make it pop. The ribs were fall off the bone sticky delicious. This place has the barbecue equation down very well, the only thing they lack is amenities. They'll wrap it up in foil and paper for you, but don't expect a plate, napkins or cutlery. One other thing that was noticeably absent was the fact that they do not have any barbecue sauce, but then again it doesn't really need it. The prices are pretty much in line with what you expect to pay for barbecue these days, but at least there was no tip screen waiting for you at the end. If you find yourself driving through Barlett, I would highly recommend stopping in and grabbing some of their smoked meats. It's a cute nostalgic space with old-timey instruments displayed in the corners and has a really unique feel. The wait staff is friendly and funny and very knowledgeable about the menu. This place has so much potential because it's in such a cool location -- the band hall of an old high school (fun decor and cool nostalgic vibes). I had really high hopes for this restaurant but it let me down. Here's what went wrong. THE FOOD: First and foremost, the food was disappointing... except for their vegetable appetizers. The fried green tomatoes were fantastic. Nailed it in terms of texture and flavor. My husband and I were both surprised by how good they were. Their Brussels sprouts appetizer was really good as well. After that, it was all downhill. I had the Mom's Meatloaf with two sides: Cowboy Caviar and green beans. The meatloaf wasn't bad but it wasn't exactly a loaf -- it was like meatballs connected together? I didn't taste the bacon in the tomato sauce and the portion felt tiny -- same size as the sides. The sides were a real letdown. The green beans tasted like they came straight from a Jolly Green Giant can. The Cowboy Caviar (which I usually love) was so bland. It was like they just poured beans and corn and pepper and onion in and that's it. I didn't taste any seasoning. Cowboy Caviar needs to have that zing (many simple recipes use Italian salad dressing). Moving onto my husband's dish which was probably the worst part. His tomato soup tasted like marinara sauce but we were hoping the filet mignon would deliver. It was simply not good. It wasn't as tender as filet mignon needs to be -- it was chewy. It did seem to be cooked as requested (medium rare) but it didn't taste good and seemed flavorless -- almost as if the meat was poor quality. Now, I know that filet mignon is a much more mild tasting cut and less flavorful than a ribeye for instance, but still, something felt very off with this steak. Neither of us enjoyed it and that's a bummer (especially at that price point). KIDS: Usually restaurants like this one are more kid-friendly so I was a bit surprised. Our kids are 3.5YO and 2YO. They brought a booster for my youngest. It had no straps at all (which I'm not even complaining about because those straps are broken at literally every restaurant). We were in a booth so it worked okay mostly. What I'm unhappy about is the lack of coloring options and kids menus. We were not brought any crayons and coloring paper upon seating so we inquired. The waitress said she'd look and ended up coming back with crayons and some paper placemats to doodle on? I respect the ingenuity but I was confused. They have crayons on hand but they don't offer them to the kids? What's the deal with that? They didn't have a kids menu printed anywhere and the waitress just told us the offerings out loud. So is there an official kids menu or not? I'd like to be able to see the prices as well. Also a bit perplexing. We went ahead and ordered one grilled cheese for the kids to share and I'm glad because it was big but also not very good. The bread was too dense so it was more of a bread sandwich. My kids weren't that into it. Almost forgot -- the fries that came with the grilled cheese were actually very good (got to give credit where it's due). TIME: Our food took forever. It wasn't a fun wait -- the kids were getting super restless. The waitress stopped by a couple times to tell us that "our food is just around the corner." Even though it ended up being untrue -- I appreciate her checking in.
