This medium sized restaurant has just about everything you'd want served all day long. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner? They serve it all day long. It's a cute nostalgic space with old-timey instruments displayed in the corners and has a really unique feel. The wait staff is friendly and funny and very knowledgeable about the menu. Personally, I've had the big thick burger and the pulled pork sandwich. Both are delicious. Others have had the chicken fried steak, the lasagna, and everyone I've gone there with loved it. Cute little spot located on taylor highs old campus- specifically the old band hall. Great way to repurpose the old building! Food was pretty good. Full bar avaliable and if I recall breakfast lunch and dinner sold all day! I had french toast and cheese grits- tasted just like it does at home- as expected I guess but nothing that gave me the wow factor I was hoping for, cheese grits however were really good, Kinda thick but packed with flavor! Eggs were cooke just right and potatoes were good too however came out luke warm like they had sat for a bit before being sent out, the pancakes were kinda like the french toast as it tasted like something you make at home but still good! Lots of pies to choose from- I went with a slice of buttermilk to go! It was good but i'd try something different next time I come by! We were at right away around 11am on saturday. Our waitress was nice and everything was out quick! The bathroom however needs some work- definitely something that's been there for QUITE sometime with no fix ups- dirty floors and walls, leaking handle when you go to flush. The food here is great and the service truly wonderful. There is sometimes a wait, but it is well worth it. The New Orleans shrimp appetizer is a must! That Cajun gravy/sauce is heavenly, and the baguette is perfectly toasted. We've had an assortment of breakfast, lunch, and dinner items here and all of them were very satisfying. Bacon is thick cut and so very delicious, the assortment of breads we've had have all been scrumptious, fries are battered with that perfect crispiness, pancakes, super fluffy and delicious, you can't go wrong with their biscuits and gravy, and they're sure to have something for everyone since their entire menu is served all day. The cheesy grits were slightly bland and the seasonal vegetables were overly oily. But otherwise everything has hit the spot! read more

It's a nice place. It's setup in the Old Taylor High School. The people are Ready for you. The service was good. I made a dumb rookie mistake and ordered shrimp and pasta from a Chicken Fried Steak place. I wasn't very hungry but I should've ordered the CFS. They have a pie assortment to beat all comers. The service is here is really great. !! To be continued : My grandson ordered chicken fried steak, mac & cheese and french fries chicken fried steak was huge and beautifully fried with cream gravy. He has a hefty appetite, but it was so large. He ended up leaving a small piece of it as he was just too full/ his french were OK and he ate all his mac & cheese one of his very favorite dishes. I decided on the meat salad with goat cheese and poppyseed dressing. It also had pecans sprinkled throughout. It was delicious. It was massive so next time I will order a half portion. I also ordered tortilla soup which came with five or six tortilla chips. It was quite good But very spicy. They also have a bakery and make a lot of pies and cakes. There was no way we could eat dessert, but we definitely stopped at the Bakery Case and ordered some Red Velvet Cake for the boys and a piece of Coconut Cream Pie for me. The restaurant has several unique features, including a bar along one side of the restaurant where you can get beer, wine, and cocktails. It had a massive chandelier that was vintage and quite beautiful in the center surrounded by other light fixtures. The tables and chairs and the booths also reminded me of vintage café style furnishings . The round tables and chairs were very unique in that barrel style. Bottom of the tables were a metal cut out design, making them very unique. Our server was absolutely wonderful. Very patient and helpful. Next time I'm in town I will definitely return.!!! read more

Great local diner serving what I would call "upscale" diner food. They always have a good selection of cakes and pies. The wait staff is usually local young folks and it's not bad service. The menu here is not lacking but sometimes I still find myself looking for something more. We do love the options for sides though, you want a side of bacon with your meatloaf, no problem, deviled eggs for a side, got you covered, how about some Texas caviar! My wife was a little disappointed they were out of salmon which was her first choice but the filet she ordered instead was really good - quality tender meat, could have used a bit more seasoning but we were impressed with the quality of the cut. I had the roasted beet salad as a side and it was fantastic! Highly recommend. I also had the pork tenderloin with a honey mustard sauce. The tenderloin was tender but maybe a tad dry from being slightly overcooked, overall I felt it was ok. We both got deviled eggs as a side, they were a little dry, not much seasoning going on but we do like the option of a deviled egg as a side so we were ok with it but it could be better. This is the best!! Plowman's Kitchen has repurposed the old Taylor High School - in particular, the band hall! There are decorations of a drum set as the chandelier when you enter the front door, a bass drum as a table, many instruments adorn the walls in addition to old photos of majorettes, stage band, and students from THS! So creative! The food!!!! The BEST biscuits and gravy ever! The biscuits must have been placed on the grill first which gave them a bit of a crunch on the outside and fluffy, yummy, inside. Came around 9:30am on a Sunday. Not too many folks eating, and therefore the wait staff was extremely accommodating and allowed us to sit outside with our dog! The food order was taken quickly (and again they were VERY accommodating to specific substitution requests!). We both got the standard breakfast (eggs, sausage/bacon, and a side). I upgraded to the biscuits and gravy. The food was filling but not overly heavy as can sometimes happen with diner food. Some of my fruit was in bad shape, but there was a large enough portion that I could pick around it! The tables outside were a bit dirty, but it was our choice to sit outside. When you first walk in you're met with some unique decor: lights made out of drums, clarinets repurposed as lamps, high school band photos along the walls, with shakos atop the waiting area. It was very niche and intriguing- something I've not seen in a restaurant before. Our wait time wasn't too long, we were seated and helped in a timely manner. They had a display case of desserts that were calling my name but breakfast was the plan. I orders the Brussels sprouts for the table appetizer with some waters to wash it down. They were topped with bell pepper and a balsamic glaze. Think the dish would have been better with tomatoes rather than bell peppers and maybe a bit more glaze but it was still pretty good. For the main course I was torn between a sandwich and eggs Benedict. Per the server's recommendation I ordered the eggs Benedict paired with homestyle breakfast potatoes. With my son accompanying me, I ordered him the kids pancake plate paired with homestyle breakfast potatoes, sausage, and scrambled eggs. Our breakfast orders are where this restaurant loses a few stars from me. When I first received my eggs Benedict the eggs were way overcooked- almost hard boiled. A traditional eggs Benedict has a poached egg that is runny in the middle- these eggs did not give, the runniest part of the egg was the hollandaise on top. I asked if they could be remade because they were very clearly made incorrectly. The waitress was very understanding and could see the issue with the quality. I did have to wait a while for a new plate but I still had some Brussel sprouts to snack on. When I received a fresh plate the eggs were properly poached and made for an enjoyable meal. The kid's pancake plate posed another egg issue but this time undercooked. I have a toddler with a huge appetite, he ate a few of the scrambled eggs and then refused them. Nearly half of the eggs were undercooked- egg whites still wiggling around making for an unsafe meal for my toddler. The sausage, pancake, and potatoes were all great. The sausage is some of the best breakfast sausage I've had but they definitely missed the mark with their eggs. With eggs being a huge staple in our breakfast experience I was very dissatisfied with the inconsistencies and lack of proper preparation. read more

Met my brother for dinner there, as it's roughly 1/2 way between Smithville and Georgetown, and not Austin... yet. The Shrimp and grits were amazing and a large portion. Oh, get the deviled eggs. My brother got the pork tenderloin. He said it was like a 5 star restaurant in taste and size. But, reasonably priced, so if you have a huge appetite, maybe get a larger size or share an appetizer. I love that it's in the old band room! Being a band geek in high school, I loved the ambience. It was pretty warm in there, so don't expect to escape the heat, though. I didn't mind it, but others would have. Also, they only have the specialty drinks listed online, so I would recommend adding their beer/wine selections as well. I've learned that I have an auditory processing issue, so when servers list out options and I'm alone, I can get a little lost. If my husband is there, he can tell them immediately. Just something to keep in mind. My brother and I agreed that is going to be our new spot when we get together for family dinners. Especially since they have a gluten free menu! My nephew has celiacs disease, so it really is the perfect place we've been looking for! read more

This is a hidden gem in Taylor and a must visit. The good is amazing, the people are even better. Feels like your visiting family. It's actually past of the old highschool in the band hall. They have musical instruments as decorations all over honoring the buildings original venue it's so cool. We stumbled upon this joint in Taylor, and what a treat!! They have turned the old school into businesses and apartments; they even kept the old lockers! What an excellent idea; way to go, Taylor!! Plowman's is in the old band hall. They paid homage with a light filter that was an old drum set and majorette hats on display. The waiter was so down to earth! It is so refreshing to have someone care and enjoy their work. He was funny and joked around with my kid, which made her smile, so win-win!! This is a scratch kitchen, and you can tell. They take pride in what they serve, and it shows!! My daughter ordered the Club Sandwich; it has three pieces of bread, so stretch your mouth out! She took the top piece off, and it was perfect for her. She ordered a side of Mac n cheese, which, to be honest, could have used something. It was delicious, but with everything else being SO good, I was expecting more. I ordered the Ham and Jam ham sandwich with jalapeño jelly!! It was so good!! It is so cute inside and there is lots of room, a true hidden gem! An absolute diamond of a restaurant. My wife had the biscuits and gravy, my son had the meatloaf and I had the cheesesteak. All of us enjoyed our meals. Excellent food, prices were well worth it. Cheaper than Whataburger! The service was good, no complaints. Drinks were refilled regularly and the hostess didn't rush us or walk off despite our indecisiveness with the menu. The location is inside an old high school. That really threw us for a loop at first because I didn't know I'd be driving into a residential area to find it. The restaurant is in the old school near downtown I was seated and noticed how cleverly decorated the place is. Really neat light fixtures caught my eyes! The menu is a little something for everyone I have no idea why I went with the strawberry salad, but dang glad I did! It was so good, I'll definitely do it again when I get a chance. This used to be the band hall in the old school and now part of Old Taylor High with a history that I couldn't begin to tell but the decor makes sense when you're here. Very much an old school diner feel with comfort food. They have daily specials that, from everything I've tried, is worth going in for. My favorites being the Cajun pasta and blueberry French toast. Portion sizes are decent and we typically take home a little togo box. The pies and various desserts are delicious. The lunch sandwiches come with one side and there's a good amount to choose from. Good portions and good pricing. Never been unhappy with their lunch menu so far. They also do a tea service from on certain days for $65. As far as service goes, we have never had an issue, there is one gentleman who seems grumpy up front, don't let that fool you, anyone who goes here likely know who I'm talking about, but he's hands down my favorite server. Very attentive, honest, quick, and I like his sense of humor. Now for the items I have tried and not a fan of, the sourdough pancakes, this can be chalked up to a personal taste possibly. The country gravy, on the 2 occasions we have tried it, was sweet. Made it difficult to eat. Needed a lot of pepper and salt. Meatloaf has been dry. Was not worth finishing the meal. The mashed potatoes with the meatloaf though were excellent I will add. Overall. I will continue to go here and keep trying new items. read more

Took a day trip to Taylor for a bit of antique shopping and dining. And found this gem. It is housed in one of the old school building and they have really made a warm inviting place to dine. Our waiter John was a hoot and made the experience entertaining, Now to the food. Their menu has a wide range of options of what I would call elevated comfort foods. We both decided on the salmon croquettes and they did not disappoint. They were well cooked and seasoned with a dill caper sauce that was quite tasty. I had the cowboy caviar and Mac and cheese for my sides while my Mom selected mashed potatoes and seasonal fruit. This place was definitely a great find and the price point was great. We are visiting Austin & l found a gem of an eatery in Taylor, Texas. The restaurant use to be the school Band Hall back in the day. They have photos from the 40's & 50's & shakos too. I would highly suggest everyone try the fried green tomatoes & Brussel sprouts appetizer if you're in town. It was SO delicious, the chili jam on the tomatoes... mmmm They gave a large portion of meatloaf & my BLT was tall and yummy! We tried Plowman's Kitchen today on the way home from church in Austin. The location and the story behind the restaurant was kinda cool, but our experience didn't live up to some of the others reviews here. I first heard about this from someone making a comment on Facebook about them having the best pies in Central Texas. We decided to have breakfast, I had a basic breakfast platter, and my husband had the biscuits and gravy, his usual. I subbed out the cottage fries for some grits on my platter, they were disappointing. Very dry and sticky, kinda like Thai sticky rice. I'm used to southern grits being buttery and creamy, you know, like you use a spoon, but not too much liquid. I asked for my eggs to be a soft scramble, they weren't, also dry. I asked for some fresh grits, and was told they were made this morning, it was about 11:30 when we were there. They offered to take the charge off our ticket and I told her that wasn't necessary. The bacon was excellent. My husbands biscuits and gravy was underwhelming as well, just gravy on biscuits, no sausage in the gravy. We were going to get a piece of pie to take home, but honestly, we took a look at the pie case, and they all looked like a pie I could make myself with a graham cracker crust, some instant pudding and some whipped cream. All in all, I'm hoping that breakfast just isn't their strong suit, and maybe we should have gone there for the lunch or dinner menu. read more
