Camp Counselors beware!! This camp owner likes to underpay their hardworking counselors! My kid applied -20 yr old college student looking for summer job, and was interviewed by Larry. Pay was not discussed. So my kid asked. And he said "it's below minimum wage, but you make tips" So I dug a bit further. This guy pays these kids $8.12 per hour to be camp counselors!?! EIGHT DOLLARS per hour! While they charge in the upward of almost $4k per camper!? Also, WHO TIPS counselors?? I never. EVER. MET ANYONE who ever tipped a counselor, sadly. This camp and its owners are horrible and they deserve to be held accountable to pay these kids the minimum wage of $16.50!! read more

My granddaughter has been attending the camp since 2021. She is already enrolled for 2026 at her request. She had a great summer and is looking forward to next year already. The owners and all the staff work hard to keep the kids having fun all summer and they succeed! This was my daughters 2nd year at RCDC. Hands down, best decision we ever made. They are occupied all day, mostly outside (which is so important) and they go on numerous trips. The staff is amazing. The communication is fantastic. The organization of the entire place is magnificent, smooth drop off and pickups. As long as we live on SI, we will be a part of this camp. We are sad this summer at RCDC is coming to an end :( See you next year RCDC!!! read more

This is my 6 year old daughter's second summer going to RCDC. My daughter cried all the way home on her last day because she said this was the best summer of her life because of camp. I loved hearing about all the varied activities, trips and fun she had each day. The director Larry can be a bit abrasive but he somehow grew on me. His wife Kathy is lovely and I have feeling the brains behind many of the wonderful activities They run an old school camp experience, free of technology and hires all loving , capable counselors. The kids look forward to all the activities that go on right there at the camp as well as the adventures they take the children on!!!! After being out of school since March I'm so glad I signed my girls up for camp! This was an amazing summer for them. RCD picks them right up out front, gives them a great day filled with too many activities to name and drops them back off our front! There are email updates throughout the day if weather is changing or a trip is canceled, there is no wondering with this place! Larry and Kathy really have a gem here and I can't wait to have my girls back again next year! Also, if you have a sense of humor you will appreciate Larry's emails every morning. My kids have been attending RCDC for the last 2 years and will be going again this summer. They always look forward to going. They enjoy their time there and come home tired having spent a busy day at camp. Lots of trips and games. The kids adore the counselors, who contribute a lot to the overall camp experience. This is our daughter's first year there and she loves the camp so much so we extended our weeks and plan to send her there next summer. Lots of trips, different activities every day, and included in the price is before and aftercare (a huge help). Also the counselors and staff are all teachers and college students. read more

Thumbs Up.. Five Stars .. Great camp!! The camp is not even over and my son can't wait to go back next summer. The camp is all about the kids filled with great organized dedicated leaders. Each day is filled with activities and fun. Great daily trips. Always going somewhere and always doing something.. even rainy days they find a place to go to and have fun.. This is the first summer camp that my son didn't spend it indoors watching TV and not even once did he say he was bored. Comes home tired, what else can I ask for. Pretty disgusting how its going around social media that larry does these things absolutely disgusting dont send your child here Via fb post Warning to all parents, I am writing to inform everyone that the owner of Richmond County Day Camp, Larry Marantz, is an arrogant, disrespectful, unpleasant, insufferable person. Upon receiving a call from Larry stating that my son had been in an altercation with another child, I went to find out what had happened. He did not know the facts at all and wanted to blame everything on my son. My son was purposefully hit in the back with a ball and hit him back only after being hit. Before that, the other child had used foul language and told my son that "your momma is a prostitute". When explaining the story to Larry he had the audacity to laugh it off and you guessed it, he said "well are you?" I was shocked and taken back all at once. His implications were unprofessional, rude, and demeaning. Additionally, the entire time he was talking over me and then went on to say such a disrespectful thing like that. His wife, Kathy, said and did nothing, she just sat there with her head down. The second time I went there to speak with a counselor, Larry was in his office speaking to another parent on the phone. Apparently a seven or eight-year-old girl called one of her parents saying it was too hot and asking for them to come and get her. He proceeded yelling at the man on the phone saying I don't care what you're saying there are no kids allowed in camp with their phone and especially not to call their mommies and daddies to tell them to come pick them up because it's too hot. I guess the man argued and was upset because Larry yelled in their daughter's face. He then became obnoxious with the parent on the phone and said well if you don't like the way I run my frigging camp take your daughter out and get a refund I got 500 other kids. All the while, another parent was in the room to hear. I was appalled. Last but not least, there was an incident yesterday with Larry taking all the boys phones away. My son refused to give his phone to the counselor who then brought my son to Larry and Larry proceeded to scream in my son's face until he gave up his cell phone. Now before everyone says my son is not supposed to have his phone, let me say that I am a single mother of two and this camp takes the children on a lot of trips and I have a tracker on both of their phones God forbid anything were to happen. That being said, when I got there, I went into his office and asked Larry what had happened today. He responded, "What happened? Nothing happened, I took some of the kids phones." I asked what else and he said, "your son refused but I took it and he got it back later in the day". I said okay but why are you screaming in my son's face to which he responded, "I scream at everyone" and then he got really angry when I started to shake my head no and started to yell at me to "get a refund, we don't need parents like you here". He then proceeded to repeatedly say get out, get out very loudly and became extremely aggressive with his hand gestures. So I said yes I want a refund, and as I was leaving, with my back turned ready to walk out because I was done with his arrogance, he yells out "let me tell you something, your son is horrible and he's going to be in prison someday". Talk about uncalled for, disrespectful, and unprofessional. I said oh my god did you just say that to me, his answer "that's right I said it". This man has no business running a camp at all, let alone with young children. He may be a little bit cheaper than some other camps, but it's not worth the risk of your children getting verbally abused and antagonized on a daily basis. Think about this, if he talks to parents in such a manner, we as adults do not get as easily intimidated as our children might. How do you think the children feel? Talk to your children, ask them questions, see how they feel, speak out for them. He should be held accountable for all of his actions. Please be advised as well, every post that anyone has posted about the camp, is usually about him. He then goes and comments under them saying that it was just a disgruntled worker. Well, he tends to have an awful lot of disgruntled workers. I assure you I am not. I am a single mom of two, who is very concerned and highly offended. My children will not be returning. My son has gone to Richmond County Day Camp for the past 2 summers (and I will be sending my other child) and has had a wonderful experience. From the start of the school year he cannot wait for the summer so he can go back to camp. The counselors are excellent and keep the children busy having fun all day. They treat the kids with full respect and show them independence and in return they grow and feel confident in themselves. Since we are full time working parents he stays for the afterhours and asks that I don't pick him up to early, so he has more time to play with his friends. That alone is amazing to me. As for the people making comments regarding Larry the owner. I get it. A few times I was taken back in regards to his responses he gave to me. I have learned this is just who he is whether wrong or right he ALWAYS puts your child first. I was also very weary of the trips but after being in business for over 20 years this seems to be very popular and what the children enjoy and they have taken notice of that. Kathy and Larry spend most of their time preparing for summer camp because this is their passion and they are doing what they enjoy. I feel bad at the end of the summer because I know my son is so upset to be leaving camp. I have also witnessed several children crying on the last day because they don't want camp to end either. This day camp deserves more than 5 stars. It is the perfect camp for any child to experience. My son is 10 and has been going to RCDC for a few years now and he absolutely loves it!!! Not even 3 months after camp is finished for the summer passes and he's already asking me if I enrolled him for the next summer. The activities they have for the kids are endless. Never a dull moment. They have special days almost every week where there is a special theme or contest. Crazy hat day and pajama day are some of my sons favorites. What's even more amazing is that the staff and camp owners join in all the fun!! They are not sitting around just watching the activities, they are actually participating and being playful and silly with the kids. How wonderful is that? The counselors and staff are top notch and trained very well. Safety is the most important priority for Larry and his camp and he ensures that all employees adhere strictly to them. I never leave worried about my son as I know he is in good hands. They even have a nurse on staff and should anything go wrong they give you a phone call right away. Now let's talk about how flexible they are. They work with you on EVERYTHING. They don't tell you a "no" without them first trying to help you out. They actually really do go out of their way to help parents out with their special needs. One of the things I like the most is that they offer flexible payment arrangements which is nice and should one ever have an issue the camp has an open door policy where you can talk to either Larry or his wife (the owners) and discuss it. The camp is VERY responsive. No question via email or phone goes unanswered and they give you the respect of responding to you in a timely manner. Professionalism at its best I have experienced. If you choose RCDC your child will not be disappointed. They provide awesome trips, lunch, swimming, sports, special themed days/lunches, and they even have special guests and activities appear on certain days. My son is so very happy to attend camp and this is the reason I will keep doing everything necessary to ensure that he continue going each year. The camp is clean and neat well air conditioned when it is to hot to be outside. Such a variety of daily activities and awesome day trips...This camp goes above and beyond to make sure our kids have a great summer experience.
