I love the Richmond District YMCA. It is so utterly unpretentious and un-fancy - which is exactly the atmosphere I want when I am sweating it out to the oldies on the elliptical. The equipment is in good shape - although it is not all state of the art, it meets all your basic needs. I have been going there for years - sometimes not as consistently as I should, but in my latest fitness push, I have come to appreciate this place even more as I have begun to avail of their excellent group classes. Staff is friendly and teachers are enthusiastic. The Y also gives back to the community via several food bank drives and other charitable works. This aspect makes it an even more integral part of the neighborhood.

Would be nice if it was a bit bigger and had newer equipment. However, it is very convenient, clean. Would recommend as a cost effective GYM with a neighborhood touch.

I love the lifting platforms where the squat racks are, and I think they utilize the space well eventhough it does get cramped in some places. Parking can be challenging in this neighborhood and I do wish they had some sort of hip thrust machine - they may have added that since I moved out of the area (I'm not 100% sure). I will say the owners are so receptive to feedback, and I can literally see that they invest the money they make back into their business. They expanded to the upstairs to provide more space to warm up, lift, and stretch. They provided more weights, machines, bands, and mats. Also, I mentioned they should have hairbands for women in case they forget them, and literally the next time I showed up they had them. They also do offer a free day trial (not super common in SF), and the owners are very kind and insanely accommodating. I'm happy it's not just a personal training gym like other places in the city and I feel like they fr wanna give back to the community as the owner did advocate to get a stop sign in a high traffic area. The owners and operators are super friendly and accommodating, it fr gives family business vibes. I love supporting black owned and family operated businesses. Overall, worth checking out and supporting if you live nearby.

Its all their fault because they fail repeatedly to deal with basic requests like updating a card on file, and repeatedly screw up on the computer system. The owner insists on not having staff and putting his personal number but he never is available and becomes irate if you "bother" him Gym is small and ill equipped. Very hot and smells bad. Never any staff there in case of problems like beings locked out. Cant get ahold of owner during normal business hours and constantly acts like he is being bothered if you report broken equipment or anything Fitness SF is better anyway. I was going to keep both but the owner of this gym doesn't reciprocate loyalty Go here if you wanna get locked out randomly and repeatedly and belittled for making perfectly reasonable complaints. Im sure he will reply here claiming i am the problem but fyi all i did was say "im sick of this" and i think anyone would be after repeatedly getting locked out despite paying $125 a month. i see people having issues with getting locked out basically every day. The owner is aware but choses to not staff his gym or switch software systems The floor uses foam tiles so when you try to wheel the benches around they become dislodged and jam and create hazards. The owner makes rash decisions like putting 100lb dumbbells on a rack not suitable for such heavy weights so they fall on your feet, he is too stubborn and gets overly defensive if you try to point out any issue, and tries to deflect (its always the members or the staffs fault, never takes responsibility or ownership)

You leave tired, but energized -- with that feeling that the hardest part of your day is already over, and you're ready to handle whatever comes next. Most importantly, I can play with my three-year-old son without worrying about not being able to keep up with him. That alone has been huge. My advice: start with at least two days a week and stick with it long enough to see the gains. You will. Punch King is tough, but it works -- and you won't regret it.

That's when I came across the Sunset Gym this past December. I started my membership with a week long pass and eventually converted it to a monthly membership. (The payment for the week pass went into my first month of membership) Pricing wise this place is a very reasonable compared to the bigger chains (i.e Fitness SF), but admittedly you are also restricted to one location. For me though, that's not a problem as I wanted a neighborhood gym more than anything. The gym itself is great - it's old school (think OG Gold's Gym style). Downstairs has plenty of free weights and a good selection of machines. Upstairs has a dedicated Cardio area, a spot for stretching, as well as additional free-weights and an outdoor area.
