No frills, no nonsense gym that has everything you need to get a good workout in. After moving back to San Francisco in the middle of last year I was looking for a gym that was more local/ in my neighborhood that I could walk to rather than taking public transit to another part of the city. That's when I came across the Sunset Gym this past December. I started my membership with a week long pass and eventually converted it to a monthly membership. (The payment for the week pass went into my first month of membership) Pricing wise this place is a very reasonable compared to the bigger chains (i.e Fitness SF), but admittedly you are also restricted to one location. For me though, that's not a problem as I wanted a neighborhood gym more than anything. The gym itself is great - it's old school (think OG Gold's Gym style). Downstairs has plenty of free weights and a good selection of machines. Upstairs has a dedicated Cardio area, a spot for stretching, as well as additional free-weights and an outdoor area. There is nothing like a local neighborhood gym, where everybody knows your name (just kidding, but you all start to recognize each other if you are a morning, midday or evening gym-goer for sure), with friendly staff and equipment that may not be the latest and greatest, but it's familiar, it works, people take care of the machines and weights and wipe them down with the many spray bottles and paper towel stations, and there seems to be one of everything you could ever want. Definitely a transit-first or walk-from-your-home-type gym, 9th and Irving is not known for its parking (though it IS known for it's ever-present MTA carts zipping around). Love the towels, the multiple bathrooms and showers, the fans everywhere, and the small outdoor area on the second floor. read more

1. Before I joined this gym I weighed 317 lbs and had not seen my penis in 7 years. Then I joined this holy temple and I now have the physique of a Greek God. 2. The staff here are angels. John will serenade you on the guitar. Patty will preach the lord's gospel. 3. Avoid the bathrooms. The lighting is so bad that if you spend more than 6 minutes in them you'll develop clinical depression. 4. Every member at this gym is drop dead gorgeous. I came back to this gym for a quick workout. I was impressed with the changes they made. They got a ton of new machines and added a Machine Bench Press and and a Chest Supported T-Bar Row. Two of my favorite machines that are hard to find at any gym based on my experience. The gym itself still looks a bit dingy, and i would to see them renovate the upstairs area. Overall a much better experience and i feel like i could recommend this gym if you live in the area and value convenience. read more

I've been going here since October, and it's one of the best value gyms in the city (by far!). Where else can you find a sub $50/month gym with a bunch of squat racks, machines, weights, etc? I'd definitely consider it the quintessential neighborhood gym. Quite literally has all of the equipment needed for a new comer, yet also satiates the seasoned gym-goer with its 10+ bench and squat racks. Dumbbells go pretty high in weight too. The equipment itself is a bit old/dated, but still entirely functional (remember the price you're paying). There are two floors, the bottom/main one with a bunch of machines, 5 treadmills, bikes, bench/squat racks, etc and the top floor with more cardio machines, a stretching area, punching bag, 4 more bench/squat racks, pull up bars outside, rowing machines, etc. People are truly super nice and approachable. They normally wipe down equipment after using it, and can help you with a spot if needed Highly recommend this gym! read more

Great gym in SF. 10(?) squat racks, sometimes they do fill up at peak hours but I appreciate the focus on strength training here. Small space but they make pretty good use of it. Sometimes it's awkward to lug a plate around someone leg pressing but it's not too bad. Despite the small space this gym has basically every piece of equipment you could want. They don't waste space on nonsense machines so strength training is great here. Parts of the gym are dated. the floor is cracked and uneven around the squat cages, and the floor is slightly slanted in a few places. This can have annoying effects on foot placement and deadlift bars rolling around. Overall strongly recommend! read more

So this is my new elliptical, pictured; I got it in my home because I realized I only used Sunset Gym for theirs. I couldn't justify $50 monthly when I could pick up one of these used for $200, or 4 months of gym membership. This is a nice facility but it's mostly noisy hetbro-type students around age 25 throwing weights around downstairs. This is the sort of gym that could very much use a lunk alarm. I went upstairs for quiet time many nights for some cardio and TV watching on my tablet. That was great except that most of us competed for the two machines closest to the door. They are the ones with the steepest incline, and I gather also the most generous with calorie burn numbers. I also LOVED the bathrooms here. Wow, a 30-minute time limit for a single occupancy bathroom? What a place to have the longest poop, let me tell you. So why my blah rating? I canceled my gym membership nearly 2 weeks before my next payment had come due. And yesterday I received a voicemail that I had eclipsed some completely made-up cutoff, so it's another $50 and my membership is good through May. Funny, I don't remember having to wait for my membership to become active the day I began working out. I had given them three stars to be nice but honestly it's robbery. I think I'll stop payment on that one through May. And BTW Sunset I actually did get quite a lot of use out of your gym, so you got about $5 or less a day out of me through the run of my membership. read more

I've been going to Sunset Gym for a few months now and would recommend it for those who know what they are doing in the gym and focusing on weight training or are frequent users of cardio machines. I like a simple work out: pick up a heavy thing, put it down, repeat, so this gym is perfect for me. I love the outdoor area upstairs and for the most part don't have issues with access to the weights and machines I need for my workout. I have some issues with the gym etiquette of other members, but that's not the gym's fault (well maybe they could crack down on folks hogging machines while staring at their phones). My issues: - while I can usually get my workout done, I often have to switch up the order and occasionally change weights or exercises from my plan because there is only one of most machines and limited weights (upstairs which is where I spend most of my time). Despite that, people will do 3+ exercises on the same machine and/or spend excessive time on their phones between sets. That's not unique to this gym, but because of the limited machines it causes issues. - I've run into some issues with machine maintenance. I don't need the newest, prettiest machines/weights, but I don't want to feel like a cable is on its last legs or have glitchy electronics - while sunset gym is still much more affordable than other gyms in the city, it's clear from reading other comments that the price has jumped a lot in the last few years. Given that the gym clearly hasn't been updated in that time and there are no bells and whistles, that rubs me the wrong way At the end of the day, the gym fills my needs and is more affordable than other options around the city where I'd be paying for extras I don't need. read more

I have always walked by this gym. When we moved here, my sister took note. I decided to visit this gym for a $10 day pass. It was $10 for one day. I asked if I could visit twice in a day. I might be back later. It closes at 10pm. They have all the equipment. The equipment works and it's older. I used the leg press, stair stepper, treadmill, and various other weight machines. They have upstairs but it's a smaller section. There's many people here because it's for the neighborhood. Sunset gym...what else would u call it? This was my first gym visit after Covid. I have been coming here since 2017 with the only stoppage happening due to the Covid LOCKDOWN. PRE-COVID this place wasn't too crowded. You could get a workout in without having to wait too long for equipment to free up. Post-COVID, it's busy, people sit there on equipment playing on their phones. You have personal trainers who try to get you to finish quickly so their clients can get their reps in. To make matters worse, they keep signing up more and more customers for a tiny gym. If you must go, it is best to go early in the morning so you don't have to deal with a lot of people. I have talked to employees there about people hogging equipment but it did no good. My favorite is the female trainer who takes up 2 and 3 pieces of equipment during her workouts as well as client sessions. I will continue to come here because it's what I can afford given my current budget. If you can afford more I strongly recommend you do so. If you are not big on white nationalists, stay away. There is a numb nuts at the gym who wears (look it up) a t-shirt that says "tactical bowl cut" which is in reference to Dylann Roof who is a racist mass shooter as if its a good thing. Plus they wear a shirt referencing mein kampf, being "red pilled"and a few other neo-fascist/nazi references. It seems the people here either don't know or don't care. I will be out of here as soon as I move. I will be canceling my membership in couple months. Another reason to think long and hard before joining is that equipment such as treadmills and weight machines are CONSTANTLY broken. This is a major issue due to overcrowding at this gym. I would give Sunset Gym 5 stars if it wasn't for the often broken equipment, disinterested employees, tolerance of white nationalist apparel and overcrowding. It's so nice to have the opportunity to support a local gym during these hard times. I have been in the market for a gym and have been eager to get in the gym once restrictions were lifted. Small and not intimidating or overwhelming whatsoever. They have the all the machines I need! You just have to make sure to be courteous and wipe down the equipment after use. For my ladies working on their glutes particularly they have all the machines for it! Also owner is super nice and engaging. So happy to have discovered such a gem! Oh also the crowd is not awkward. For many years that I lived in San Francisco, this was my DIY gym of choice. A+ all around. You will not find a better selection of equipment: amazing amount of squat racks, GHR machine, heavy bag, good selections of KBs, Jacobs Ladder, and more. Everyone that works here is warm, welcoming, and professional. The pricing is straightforward, honest, and very fair. Five Stars = Ramy, Tarek, Will, Calvin & Franklin : ) This gym is Home Sweet Home. I am really glad to be back here after a long hiatus dealing with external circumstances. They make you feel like part of the family here, it's really true. Any gym can have equipment but this place truly is 'where the heart of the Sunset beats'. They really care about their members. (And they do have every kind of equipment I need to get the job done in addition to that.) And now with the new patio, you can look up at beautiful cloud patterns in a wide-open sky while you stretch. What other gym has *that*?! I absolutely love it. I've met soooo many wonderful people here. It takes me sometimes 40 minutes each way on two trains to get here and get home - and I pass by about 8 or 9 other gyms on the way, but those other gyms would never be for me. I know some people would be happy in those big anonymous corporate gyms, but what motivates me is community support. And this little family-owned neighborhood gym has that in droves - it is like the Cheers bar of gyms ("You wanna go where everybody knows your name")... For me, the difference between chain gyms and Sunset Gym is like the difference between a vending machine sandwich and your grandmother's home cooking. There is just no comparison. Thank you so much to everybody who welcomed me back with such warmth - it is no small thing for me and is making all the difference in the world in motivating me to keep my shoulder to the wheel with the goal of getting back into health. While staying SF for a week I purchased a short term pass to this gym. I really liked that this was an option, and much more affordable than many local gyms for day/week passes. The process was super easy and the staff very helpful, no hard sell with the short term pass. The gym itself was great. It is not fancy or pretty, but has all the equipment you would want as a serious fitness enthusiast. Plenty of squat racks and free weights, good quality cardio equipment (including a ladder/climber) and room upstairs for stretching and floor exercise. It remined me of the old-school independent gyms that used to be more available before the rise of the big-box gyms. There was a really friendly neighborhood vibe, and it seemed like if you worked out there regularly it would be the kind of place where you would get to know everyone. I loved it there and would highly recommend it for those who like a good quality gym without too many extras. read more

Joined this sweet little local gym. They have a great option $49/mo or prepay for3-6 months for $39/mo. So far I've been 5 days a week and it's been worth it. It's a mile from my house or I can jump on the N Judah and get there in a few minutes. Not had to wait for the elliptical. Some wait from 5:30-7pm evenings for the machines downstairs. 4 bathrooms, and 2 with showers. The men are respectful and no weird guys staring at you. The girls who work out here are serious and it's motivating to see how fit and dedicated they are. read more

Sunset Gym is AWESOME!! Best price if you're looking for a gym around the Sunset area. This gym is great for strength training, and there's also a good selection of cardio machines. I joined during the pandemic and they do a great job of making sure areas are frequently vacuumed and members themselves are pretty good about wiping down equipment after they use it. The post-workday rush hour does get a little crowded, but I usually never have to wait long since there's so many squat racks and equipment. The workers here are friendly and it really feels like a community/neighborhood gym. The con is that they do not offer group classes, if that is what you're looking for. They also do not have Olympic weightlifting platforms. If you're just the average gym-goer living in the area, I highly recommend Sunset gym. read more

This little gym is a hidden gem in the sunset district. My girlfriend and I have been going here for about 5 months now and love it. They have most everything you really need in a gym, including lots of weight lifting equipment, multiple sets of dumbbells, multiple squat racks, cable machines, different types of benches, lots of ellipticals. They don't host any classes, or training courses. I would say this gym is more of a weight lifting gym rather than an all around circuit training gym. If you are someone who is looking more for weight training exercises than look no further, this gym is very nice, clean, and I would highly recommend it. This is a great gym - quite possibly the best in the Bay Area. It's extremely inexpensive in comparison to all other gyms and of course all of the boutique gyms, and it has everything you need. They have two floors and an outdoor space which is quite possibly my favorite part, lots of equipment and wonderful staff who ask you for feedback weekly and are constantly looking for ways to improve their gym. Day passes are $10 Weekly passes are $25 Monthly passes range from $33.33-60 depending on what you'd prefer, and if you're a student Deals for 6 month commitment, and if you choose to do a day pass or weekly pass first, those amounts are deducted from whatever monthly 'membership' you end up choosing! They of course have busy hours during the 5-7pm window, but what gym doesn't? I try to come after 7pm and I never have to wait for anything. It's also conveniently located at Irving and 9th, so several buses and the N muni stop right on the block. As soon as my other gym membership contract ends, I'm switching over to Sunset Gym! read more

This gym definitely has a personality; the gym environment, collection of equipment, and friendly staff gives this gym a unique vibe different from any other gym I've been to. The gym's interior may look a bit run down, but staff members are constantly vacuuming and tidying up the place. I've worked out at this gym since the beginning of the pandemic and not once did I feel unsafe. Most of the gym-goers here are courteous and wipe down the benches and equipment after using it. There's plenty of disinfectant spray around the gym so cleanliness is not an issue. The gym had towel service and showers but are currently not active due to COVID. The gym itself is two stories tall. For a neighborhood gym, it has a little bit of everything for your cardio and weightlifting needs. Notably, they have about 7 squat racks on the first floor and 4 squat racks on the second. They also have cool equipment that you don't see in any typical neighborhood (or even larger gyms such as 24 hour fitness and USF Koret gym) which can add a little spice for your workouts. For example, they had barbell chains, warped barbells, safety squat bars, Cambered bars, Swiss bars, Log bars, and earthquake/bamboo bars (Felt like Bubba from Forrest gump naming all the barbells, iykyk). They also have heavy bag and speed bag upstairs in case that's your method of blowing off steam. There's also a small outdoor area on the second floor that has two pullup bars that are perfect for practicing muscle ups. Lastly, they have Stairmasters, Versiclimbers, a Jacobs Ladder, and others for your infinite stepping and climbing needs. The staff here are very friendly. They are the type of people you can have casual conversations with before, during, or after your workout. You may catch them working out right next to you occasionally but don't be afraid to talk to them or ask for a spot if you need one because they're all really nice. You really can't beat the pricing at the gym here either. For a SF gym, with a 6 month commitment it's only $40 a month for a single, $70 for couples, and $34 a month for students, teachers, and seniors. They also have different prices for prepaid plans and short term plans all listed on their website. As of August 2021, they also have a 6 weeks for $60 special if you want to try it out. Bottom line, this is a great neighborhood gym with friendly staff at a great price. I love the diverse weightlifting and cardio equipment they have that helps spice up my workouts. If you are a powerlifter, this gym is perfect for you. For the amount of equipment they have, the gym is a bit small which can be a hassle during the gyms rush hours. Some of the equipment and the interior itself can use a bit of updating but hey, everything works how it should and you're there to work out, you don't need everything to be pretty. read more

Recently I started to visit this gym. Coaches always help and tell you how to train. In the dressing rooms and the hall itself, there are not many people in the morning. I was skeptical about this gym till I walked in and was kindly greeted by the gentleman at the front desk, his name is Calvin I think? He was very welcoming and gave me a tour around the place and took his time explaining updates and renovations. We hit it off and we talked for like 20mins. Through out the tour, all the members kept interrupting us and praise Calvin. They would run up and give him a high five, hugs and even pinch his butt, I was like ok........ Great neighbor gym. All the equipment you need without it being a scene. A nicer, more accommodating staff you won't find. Rami, the owner genuinely cares for the members, the neighbors, and any passerby on the street. Also, Shane Roberts is a trainer there and one of the best. Two years ago, I started with Shane. Up to that point I was fearful of lifting anything heavy because I had a bad back. Shane worked hard to understand my predisposition and worked with me methodically and carefully. I can now deadlift 315 lbs! He may come off as a hard-case, but you will not find a more compassionate and knowledgeable trainer. He will push you, though, and he delivers on results. read more

Spoiler Alert: this isn't the most fabulous gym in all of San Francisco. However, it does have a great range of equipment, relatively good hours and a very very friendly staff. Sunset Gym is in the heart of the Inner Sunset right on 9th between Lincoln and Irving, right across the street from Park Chow. I started my membership about a month ago and have been nothing but pleased with my overall experience. Sure it's small and gets crowded at peak workout times (Mon.-Thurs. 5 pm-7pm), but there is always an open machine SOMEWHERE and the place is not pretentious at all. I really hate going to the gym. But somehow Sunset Gym has made me somewhat excited to walk over and get a workout in at the end of a long workday without it seeming like a chore. Colin, among the other staff members, is really nice and friendly. Memberships range in prices, with special pricing for couples and people with work discounts. For a 6-month membership, monthly pricing is $39.99. Not a bad deal when most workout studios here cost at least $15 for a class. My only cons with this place is a lack of open space for freeform workouts and that some of the machines are a bit dated. It also can feel a little dirty compared to other gyms, but I'm not complaining. What shortcomings SG may have is more than made up for in great, friendly staff members and knowing you pay for what you get plus more, nothing fancy. I recommend Sunset. Go here. Easy to join but difficult to cancel. There is no membership department or even a membership contact, just a guy working behind the desk. I liked this gym until they enforced the mask mandate. I can't run on the treadmill with a mask. Even though I think the mask mandate has been lifted, I have moved on. My recommendation is to read whatever you sign very carefully. In fact, take home the documents so you have the time to read every word. read more

I was surprised to find that this gym even has a heavy and speed bag if you like to get in some heavy bag work for your cardio. I was also glad that they have kettlebells lying around. Everything you need is most likely in this gym. I stick to the free weights. squat rack is always free in the morning, though it can get crowded at peak times like a Monday 5-7PM. Staff is friendly and are there to address your needs. I got their first timer price deal of 6 weeks for $60. Works out to the standard $40/month (one of the other options), though if you get this option it's a 6 month minimum commitment. read more

It has been a long time since I've updated this review and much has changed for the better. As mentioned in my last review, I have been working out in gyms for over 40 years in many parts of the country and this is one of the two top gyms I have found. There's more to a gym than the latest equipment or the best decor ... it is the people that own and run the place and the gym members. Anybody can buy a lease and equipment, it takes a special combination of ownership/management, staff and atmosphere to keep you happy and coming back. I've been at this location for over 15 years; and, until Ramy and his staff took over I was just about to leave. Now I don't think I would work out anywhere else. Nothing is perfect is this world, but what shortcomings Sunset Gym may have is more than made up for in the fact that you are appreciated there and you get your money's worth. What more can you ask for?! The gym is well-equipped for most people, Plenty of free weights (my preference), machines, cardio and stretching area. If you are not bound by the frills and neon and you want a great, friendly place to get in or stay in shape. This is the place in San Francisco.
