The first station in Richmond was built in 1846, not on the same site as the present building which opened its doors in 1937. Richmond station serves as a terminus for zone 4 district line services and also as a stop for many national rail services out of Waterloo and into Surrey. You can get to Hammersmith on the district line in around 15 minutes, or into Waterloo in around 16 mins on the main line fast service, of which there are around 2 per hour. This makes Richmond very commutable. The final piece of the puzzle serving North London is the Silverlink service, which, if you can brave the crack addicts can get you all the way to Hampsted in around 40 mins. It feels like the slowest train in the world right now, although TfL are taking over management so perhaps it will improve. There are 7 platforms, 1+2 for main line services, 3+4 for Silverlink, and 5-7 for district line. I would advise skipping the ticket office and machines in the entrance hall and going to the ones on platform level which are much less busy. There is a front entrance onto Richmond High Street, and a handy back entrance onto Church Road which is much more pleasant, but floods everytime it rains. It was recently voted South West Trains 'Station of the Year 2007' in mysterious circumstances. This is a cracking little interchange really. Using this station daily has make me realise that trains are often late, but mostly i love the fact that the services are all on the boards meaning you have some very strange places lke Upminster in Essex as final desinations. Transport for London have just renamed the sliverlink service 'London Overground' and there is new trains on the way in 2008 or 2009. I personally find it to be slow but quite good for getting to Camden, King's Cross etc without going into Zone 1. There is a new Marks and Spencer where the Door shop used to be by the ticket barriers in the entrance hall. I still think Phil is right about going to Source though instead though! read more

Richmond Station - Train Stations Near Me

Richmond Station is hardly the largest train station you'll ever visit, however, for a suburban station, it is fairly roomy. This is because it is the end point of the District Line (Richmond branch), the London Overground (Richmond to Stratford) and a station on South West Trains (trains heading to Reading, Windsor, Hounslow, Shepperton on occasion, Teddington and points in between). There are therefore several platforms - 1 and 2 serving SW Trains, 3 and 4 serving London Overground, and the rest (up to 7 or 8) the underground. The station is on two and a half levels. The street level (as entered into from the front) contains the ticket counters, a coffee shop, and the now closed travel centre). There are also ticket machines, though these are SW trains' ticket machines. You can buy travel cards here, but if you want to top up your oyster, you need to queue for the ticket desks. Downstairs, you'll find a key cutter and access to the platforms. Access to platform one is up and down some steps, access to the rest is down stairs immediately in front of you. Both on that level and on the platforms themselves, you'll find some concessions - coffee shops, a bagel shop and a pasty shop. There are toilets, though these are now charged for. The entire station, except for some of the concessions, is outdoor. The floors can get quite slippery, though the bulk of the station and the platforms is undercover. There is a car park, but it is ruinously expensive. There is a cab rank outside, and, in fact, the front area can get quite busy with cabs and people picking up and dropping off. Further in front you can catch buses too. All in all, a busy suburban station servicing trains and tubes. read more

Though this is a mainline station too, I know it more as one of the ends of the District Line. If you have managed to get the right branch, you can't miss it. Sit up the front for an easy walk to the exit. Busses stop right outside the front of the station. One thing I used to like about this station is that there were free loos to the right as you came through the turnstiles. Unfortunately they seem to be installing pay barriers Grrrrrrr! There are still free loos available: on platform 2 for the men, and platform 1 for ladies. These are inside the ticket barriers of course, so if you need to go, don't forget before you pass through. Platform 1 is also across a bridge from the other platforms, so there are steps. I believe these loos are going to remain free. If you are travelling home from here on the tube you might find it worth your while to walk up the platform to the front end of the train. In central London on the Circle and District lines the trains tend to be shorter than the platforms. Meaning that those at the back end of the platform end up running up the platform and several carriages worth of passengers end up cramming into the last ones. It means Central and District line trains are often half empty at the front and standing room only at the back. So it may be worth your while to walk up and get a front seat if you don't enjoy a crush. read more

Richmond Station might not be the largest station you'll ever encounter but as one of the main commuter stations between London and the South East it does get pretty busy at times. There's a Marks and Spencers, where you can buy essentials like milk and bread at the end of a busy day. Commuters can also choose from a range of different snack bars including a West Cornwall Pastry Company and a Bagel Shop. There are seven platforms in total, the first two are taken up by the District Line Underground trains and the next two the Overground trains going via West Hampstead and Camden Road. There are frequent direct trains to Waterloo, which is only 20 minutes away and slightly further afield to Windsor, Reading and Eton. If you have an Oyster card you'll need to queue up at the counters as it isn't yet possible to buy these on the machines. I wonder how much it says about a place when the best feature of it is a mini m&s food? This train station is great because it combines tube and overground, and the services are pretyy good wherever you need to get to (although the district line is as useless as always). Also a mini whsmith and you can get tickets quick through one of the many ticket machines. Gets slightly busy on Friday and Saturday nights when drunk youth are waiting for taxis outside, but other than that very safe. read more

I commute to Richmond station everyday via overland and tube. A couple of additional observations that the other reviewers haven't added. - Ticket inspectors are regulars on the overland SW Trains section (once every fortnight in recent months) so make sure you have the right ticket ie can't use Oyster prepay on overland (SW Trains). You will get a £20 fine if caught. - Floors are very slippery when wet. Be careful - The mini M&S is more costly than the M&S 5 minutes walk away. - Tube trains departing Richmond are often delayed due to late arrival. The joy of the District line. - Don't rely on trains being on time, you will be late home and your wife will not like it. - The toilets now cost money. They used to be free. However if you go on the platform, there is a free toilet. - The coffee at the top of the station is great. read more

This is Ok as long as you don't have to talk to anyone. The guards who work here are extremely rude and unhelpful, so don't get lost and ask for directions or assistance! Better still, go somewhere else is possible! read more

This is really a review for tourists rather than daily commuters. We visited Richmond for three weeks and utilized the bus and trains in the area almost daily. We loved not having to drive a car during this visit. A few things we learned: 1) We could use our Apple Pay instead of an Oyster Card to board/pay for the bus and train service which was very convenient. Apple Pay automatically calculated the cheapest rate based on our usage and we didn't have to worry if our Oyster Card was loaded with money. 2) The trip into Waterloo Station was easy and we could easily transfer to other lines to tourist spots in London. 3) We could use Google Maps to quickly give us the train/bus route from one location to the next. 4) The train from Richmond to Windsor (for Windsor Castle) is too far out to use contactless payment (Oyster Card or Apple Pay) so you need to purchase a ticket. read more

its an interesting mix of busy and rude folk (the customers and staff) with some nice old school touches. since its a tube line and silver link terminus, and the through point for a bunch of main line trains, its invariably busy (and with train delays, even more so). other hazards include very slippery floors in wet weather (especially in the ticket areas) and too narrow walkways leading to some ill tempered barging and humphing. Still, there's a friendly guy loitering by the self service ticket machines offering you cut priced used travelcards, and a pretty good coffee place near the entrance, with a decent WC inside the ticket zone. in summary, a London microcosm. Just be a little patient in negotiating the place and you'll do just fine. read more
