The controllers are great and Richmor, the FBO here, is a good and accommodating bunch of people. The tower is attended from 7:30 AM to 10:30 PM UTC. This airport is also home of the 109th Airlift Wing, Air National Guard, so don't be surprised to see C-130's out and about especially during the week.

Since it is a small airport, navigating to the gate or anywhere is very easy. Terminals are very spacious and there are plenty of food and gifts options. There are more updates coming, especially in terminal A. I saw the newly remodeled section, the layout is relax and open. I finally attend the Adirondack Balloon Festival this year, and it was poppin'! This review is a…read morehybrid, highlighting the venue and the event. This is one of those events where every year I say I'm gonna go, and then every year I'm like, "Oh shoot, that was *today*?" So then I put it on the next year's bucket list until it becomes a vicious cycle... But nope, that all changed this year. I actually made it (setting the alarm was a feat itself). It was a magical late-September morning, and the air was thick with a humid, dense fog. I couldn't believe I was on the road at 4:30 am, heading North to Queensbury to scoop up my partner in crime at 5:30 am before jetting to the airport to catch "Walter's Mass Ascension," a simultaneous flight of up to 100 of balloons. Yeah, we weren't missing that. Getting to the the airport from neighboring Queensbury was actually a breeze; in a moment of weakness, we made the executive decision to pay for parking ($10!) directly across the street from the airport road, where dozens of other sleepy-eyed balloon chasers made their way to the landing field on foot. If I had to do it again, I'd park at the vet's office next door, also offering parking for $10, because the guy who was "directing" traffic in my lot (i.e. pointing at random patches of grass with his flashlight) wasn't the friendliest, but maybe he's just not a morning person. Had we opted for the free parking, leaving would have been a nightmare, idling in a long single-file line of cars exiting so in hindsight, paying to park wasn't a bad call. On our way through the gates, I particularly enjoyed the retro airplane statue (?) with its permanent holding in limbo, dangling in front of the admin building, which looked like something out of a Wes Anderson film, so points for that. Once inside the airport gates, it was really just time to wander until the launch started. It's so bizarre to think about how despite the fact a hot air balloon's a rather huge contraption, before it's all blown up, it's really just the basket/gongola (for passengers), with a neatly folded parachute, ready to be unfurled, blown up, and floating away. Launch was scheduled for 6:30 - 7:30 am, but the first balloons started going up around 7 am, so while the launch field was littered with trucks, trailers, and gondolas, without much action, we booked it to the large airplane hanger to get in on the all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast, a fundraiser benefiting the Open Door Mission, a Glens Falls-based rescue mission. We stuffed our faces with pancakes, french toast, sausage, coffee, and OJ, and had a full belly before venturing out to catch the action. The first balloons started glowing up and taking flight right around 7 am, so that's when the morning really started to pick up. All of a sudden, the field was full of activity, with brightly colored balloons and fabrics filling up the horizon. We had a great morning walking through this magic, and sunrise only made the foggy morning glow with enchantment.

Although the milage is further from my…read morehome is further than Logan, it's a much easier trip as there is less traffic, and the airport experience is more pleasant than Logan while having comparable (or better) prices for the routes I've taken. I've never had a long line through security at Logan, and the employees are polite and friendly - they seem less harried than at larger airports. The restrooms are nice, with large enough stalls to comfortably take your luggage in with you and doors that go from floor to ceiling. There are water bottle filling stations in multiple places. Food options are plentiful with restaurants at a variety of price points and there are book stores, snack shops and gift shops as well. Some of the gates are small and don't have enough seating, and it would be nice to have more charging stations for cell phones and electronics at each gate. However, the seats are comfortable and the airport is pretty clean. Parking is great - much cheaper than Logan. On school vacation weeks, I've parked in Lot 5 for just $35 for the entire week. Definitely a solid choice in Airports.

Westfield-Barnes Regional Airport is a 182-acre public & military airport, strategically located in…read moreWestern Massachusetts in the town of Westfield, MA. Barnes is one of Massachusetts' largest airports with a strong flight training, general aviation, and military presence. The 104th Fighter Wing of the Massachusetts Air National Guard is based out of Barnes, and it is an operational flying unit assigned to the Air Combat Command. They proudly claim the honor of being one of the oldest flying units within the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. There is a specific Fighter Squadron assigned to the base which is responsible for providing defense of the northeastern US airspace. As a result, this small airport plays host to a lot of general aviation (propeller and jet) planes, and some very spectacular military fighting aircraft. I generally stay down the road at the Holiday Inn Express hotel in Westfield, and I'm often treated to some amazing sights and sounds when the F-15 Eagles roar by while practicing their touch n' go's, or heading off on a mission. On a recent trip, earlier this Fall, I was fortunate enough to watch the 104th conduct two early morning launches of the F-15 Eagles. One mission of the 104th is Aerospace Control Alert (ACA), providing armed fighters ready to scramble in a moment's notice to protect the Northeast from any airborne threat. This unit is responsible for protecting a quarter of the nation's population and one third of the country's Gross Domestic Product. Mighty impressive! Located inside the airport is a terrific little pub and grill known as Papps. You can choose to sit inside down on the first level, or upstairs on the covered observation deck to enjoy a drink and your meal, along with a great show down on the airfield. If you are an aircraft fanatic then you'll enjoy the opportunity to sit up on the observation deck and take in the activities at Barnes Airport. If you're lucky enough, you might even get to feel the ground shaking as the F-15's take off.
