The owner (you'll know him by the majestic beard and Jedi-like calm) has created a space that feels more like the clubhouse of a literary wizard than a traditional store. My kids regularly burst in with chore money and vague intentions ("I want a cool book... or maybe a weird trinket... or both?"), and he always helps them find something they're excited about--usually tossing in a friendly discount and a bookmark like some benevolent book dragon guarding his hoard of stories and treasures. Then there's the store cat. Friendly. Regal. Frequently seen offering her belly like she's your new best friend--until she suddenly decides you've overstepped and smack, you've been chosen for sacrifice. My youngest considers her a highlight of every visit. Herringbone has an eclectic and well-curated mix: books (of course), LPs, mildly offensive candles that make great gifts (for the right people), a fun kids' corner with books and toys, and the owner is always happy to order something if it's not in stock. It has a great little coffee shop with bake goods they brought in from a local bakery. I found the book I wanted, an iced tea, and a cookie and I was all set. The proprietor asked me about my selection and we talked a bit about it. All in all a great experience and I will definitely be back again.

The children's section was also wonderful and my kids found so many hidden gems. A lot of hardcover books they found were at a used book price, but looked totally new to me. They are very comparable to the other used bookstores that I have reviewed and I have never put a book back on the shelf because I thought it was too high priced. The staff here is 10 stars and very helpful. The most helpful I have met at any bookstore ever. On this trip one afternoon, I decided to stop in when it was open and loved my experience here. It's an eclectic used book and art store. The cashier was immediately welcoming and shared that local high school students are mainly the artists on display, with all manner of things for sale. The main draw here is used books, arranged by topic, but there's artwork and antiques mixed in everywhere. I bought a few charms and some junk journaling style post cards. It's one of those places you don't really know what you want to buy until something speaks to you. Prices are reasonable, you can tell this is more of a passion shop.
