Despite or in spite of COVID 19 and it's host of variants - we took a two year postponed trip to the UK in 2022. We were gone the month of June with 2 weeks in England on our own with the help of the Rick Steve's book of course, followed by the Rick Steves' two week tour of Scotland. This is our third tour with Rick's company and despite all of them being exemplary - this one is top's in my opinion. The first was Italy, then Eastern Europe and now Scotland. We are healthy energetic fun loving and find the tours small enough but large enough to make new friends of all ages and walks of life! Why do we keep coming back to Rick Steves' Europe? It's not money! It's value! We love the program of roughly 1/2 day guided touring followed by 1/2 day on our own exploring, periodic scheduled group dinners and lot's of use of local public transportation, walking and education from local tour guides! Rick has the best tour guides IMHO! They make the trip, educational, fun and inspiring - they are professionals with extensive knowledge of their regions!

We have taken 6 RS tours and are signed up for our 7th. The hotel locations are always very good, but sometimes the hotels themselves are less than ideal. Having said that, we have stayed in some very nice hotels on these tours. For us, the excellence in RS tours lies in the well thought out itineraries, knowledgeable and highly capable guides, local food experiences, excellent and roomy buses, adequate free time, and a very professional organization. Overall, a 5-star experience with mostly 2 and 3 star hotels. If you want to stay in luxury hotels with luxury service, I would suggest Tauck tours or perhaps Butterfield & Robinson, but be prepared to spend a great deal more. Attached are photos of some of the hotels we have experienced on Rick Steves tours.

I just went on the best of Europe teen family tour. I had Martin and Laural as my guides and they did a fantastic job and Laural especially was just fantastic and so friendly. The trip was perfectly planned never ran into issues my family loved it. On the tour it was so nice to hand the reins to someone else. It was nice to just step back and let the guides handle everything and lead us which was a huge stress relief. I would recommend this trip to anyone the only downside was the kids on the tour were not at the same sophistication level I would have expected which was turbulence at times. All in all the tour gave memories mostly good and others we can look back at and laugh at.

I reached out to customer support expecting to be out of luck, but hoping for a miracle. I spoke with Caitlin, and the level of service I received was truly unmatched. Caitlin was not only outstanding, but she also became personally invested in making sure I didn't miss the whale watching tour. Even though she did not have to, she went completely out of her way to help--giving me directions, encouraging me on my way to the marina, and tracking my progress. To top it off, a wonderfully kind staff member, Sarah, met me in the parking lot to guide me onto the boat. Caitlin and the team made an unforgettable day possible. As for the tour itself--it was extraordinary! It was my first time seeing whales, and we got to see Orcas, Gray whales, and Humpbacks all in a single trip!! Every staff member I met was knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and kind. This was truly a remarkable once-in-a-lifetime experience, and I couldn't be more grateful to PS Express for making it happen.

Paid parking is available just outside the building. Public bathrooms are down the street near a coffee shop. They had two boats in the harbor, we were on the smaller one: Redhead. The interior has about 12 booths that fit four people each with a wrap-around deck on the outside. The boat was nice and comfortable with table service. They have coffee and hot chocolate, and food including a blueberry buckle. We saw one Gray Whale, one pod of Orcas with a young one, and one pair of Orcas. We also saw Harbor Porpoise, Harbor Seal, Sea Otter, Bald Eagles, and lots of birds. It felt like most of the time we were driving really fast to get to the whales and then to Friday Harbor, then back. Most of the time is just moving quickly on the water. Though the experience was great, I probably wouldn't go on this trip again. We didn't see many whales. It was a very long day of just going quickly through the area. If I went again it would be at a different time of year and only for the half-day tour.

We didn't know anything about going on safari, and Phil build a custom trip that catered to exactly our personal travel style of going to some of the more off-the-beaten-path places with fewer tourists, but still lots of amazing experiences (we watched a family of elephants chase off a pair of male lions!). Everyone we met was on their 4th or 10th safari and when they found out we'd never been before, they'd always ask, "So how did you even find this place?" Also I had no idea you could have a vacation with this much adventure and yet zero stress. Having Phil take care of everything and getting it all arranged for and paid in advance took a HUGE load off of us, which was so great as we both have jobs where we typically do a lot of planning and project management. By taking care of that, Phil let us go on an exciting vacation where we actually got to RELAX. We took literally THOUSANDS of amazing photos, but here are just a couple fun ones I shot with my phone.

From the very first day of working with him to plan and organize our trip of a lifetime, we felt we were in great hands. Phil's fantastic first-hand knowledge of the camps allowed him to create a trip that far surpassed the typical group package deals. Phil meticulously plans every detail of the trip, from the best places to stay to recover from jet lag before the safari, to every transfer. You are never left wondering where to go or if someone will be there to meet you. The camps he chooses are small and personal, where you are taken care of and treated like family. The safari experience is second to none, with personal drivers and guides who are excellent, highly skilled, and knowledgeable. If you want a safari experience to remember, I can't recommend Phil and On Safari-In enough!

Even though the weather didn't agree with us, we still had an enjoyable time. We purchased our tickets online a few days ahead because you get a better price that way. Each ticket is good for two separate rides. We arrived just after 10 in the morning and it was grey and overcast. The sky was very cloudy and there was a foggy mist over the mountains. It was lovely but not the best weather for sight seeing. We went ahead and rode up the mountain and back and it was fun but as you can guess the views weren't great from the gondola. About half the ride it was just like being inside frosted glass and all we could see was grey. We stayed at the top for a while but the winds were to fierce for our pup so we headed back down and spent some time eating, shopping and enjoying the area. We were hoping the weather would clear up later in the afternoon. Unfortunately for us, Mother Nature had other plans and it was cool, foggy and totally overcast all day. I wasn't even really that disappointed though because it was just so beautiful being there. It was honestly my favorite kind of weather. On our second ride, we did try riding the famous "Green Gondola". We had seen other people waiting for it on our earlier ride and asked a staff member what it was all about. They said it was just a replacement gondola so it didn't match the others exactly and we kind of laughed at how silly it is but people love things that are unique. There was no line, so we gave it a go and I'm here to tell you that it didn't part the clouds and I haven't won the lottery since riding it :) Sorry to say it is just like the red ones. Even with the weather, we made a really nice day of it and if you haven't seen this area, I would definitely recommend giving the gondola a try. I think next time we will probably risk the higher prices at the gate to make sure the weather is cooperating for the ride.
