That crew worked extremely hard in record heat from 9 to 6 every day. They worked fast - not sloppy fast, but efficient fast; like they have done this a thousand times before. And they left the job site clean and orderly every day. Our agreement was that IW would build the structure and I would procure the door and windows, which they would install. We had to wait a few weeks for the windows, but IW came back and finished the job as soon as the windows were available. We got quotes from several builders, and IW's price was in the middle, but they gave me the most confidence that they could actually do the job. And I liked that they did not ask for any money upfront, but rather pay 25% at 4 agreed-upon stages of progress. We had a good idea of what we wanted, and provided IW with some sketches and approximate dimensions, and they did the rest. When there were design choices to be made, they laid out the options and let us decide. They did NOT nickel and dime us with lots of billable change orders. Our project was slow to get started due to a snafu getting the building permit (which IW handled completely ) but once they got started, they made amazingly fast progress. They were also the most expensive out of three companies considered. In response to Intown's reply: We did pay $600 more to fix the hidden trim work. We didn't feel it was right to pay an additional $1,000 for that and other items addressed in the estimate. As for changing the scope of the project, the recommended paint did not perform as described by Intown. We could not see our way clear to pay an additional $1,400 on a $14,000 job. We used to be one of those 1,400 satisfied customers. Sorry we could not work this out.

He assured me a member of the team would arrive soon with an estimate and even invited me to call him personally if I didn't hear from the team soon. There was no need, I received an email and a call later that day. Russ showed up the next day and provided an estimate for the project. While I had him there, I showed him some other issues with the house that had been on my "to-fix list" and he provided an estimate for those projects as well. The cost was exactly what I expected, and I gave him the go ahead to schedule workers ASAP. They came within a few days, even though it was all happening around the Thanksgiving holiday. Jose and another roofer (sorry, I didn't catch his name) showed up early for the appointment but waited out front until the appointed time. They were courteous, kind (even to my very excited dog), and had the problem fixed in no time. They even installed additional flashing to the second skylight (which hadn't yet started leaking) just as a precaution, free of charge. The office staff were just as kind and professional as the roofers. I worked with Deb Burris who helped me with billing and scheduling. The interface for billing was simple, the contracts and estimates were clear and easy to understand, and she was very knowledgeable and responsive over texts, emails and calls. I will certainly be calling them again soon for those other household projects. I recommend using them if you have any home improvement or repair needs.

I contracted with Sawhorse in 2012 to replace my entire HVAC system, encapsulate/seal my…read morebasement/crawlspace, install a new hot water heater, waterproof and install a proper drainage system at the back of my house, and provide some miscellaneous electrical, drywall, and flooring work. 1. The HVAC and basement encapsulation work was subcontracted to Vis Viva Energy Services, who then hired two additional subcontractors to perform the bulk of the HVAC work. Communications between the Sawhorse VP/Project Manager, Justin McAusland, and Vis Viva was poor. On the first day of the project, Vis Viva began to re-use existing ductwork during the installation. Working from home, I caught the mistake and the NEW ductwork that was contracted for was installed. 7 years later, I found out that the condensate drain pan for the attic heat pump installed by Vis Viva was too small, resulting in damage to the living room ceiling below when the system leaked. 2. Howard, responsible for the ductwork/HVAC sealing (this was a newer service that Sawhorse was offering) did a good job overall, but made a simple mistake (improperly sealing the vents in each room during multiple HVAC leak tests) that resulted in continued testing, chasing "leaky" new ductwork, for several weeks, maybe a couple of months, beyond the initial time estimate. Vern eventually caught the mistake, and did a great job throughout the entire project. 3. I was quoted $2,775.60 for a hybrid, electric/heat pump hot water heater (materials sourced by Vis Viva, and installed by the plumbing sub-contractor) that ended up being significantly more than the same exact model I found at Lowes ($1,173.91 delivered with a 5-year extended warranty... that number doesn't include installation). I understand adding labor for the plumbing contractor and a 10% general contractor markup, but not the $1,600 additional that I was quoted/almost charged. Justin did return the materials that Vis Viva ordered, and ended up purchasing the hot water heater on my behalf at Lowes for the lower cost. Again... I'd expect my general contractor to provide competitive pricing the first time, without me having to check. 3. Justin appeared to be taxed, managing multiple projects. One day, he dropped off a sealant to be used in the waterproofing/drainage system at the back of the house that was clearly marked, "do NOT use under grade." When I brought this up, he was confrontational, condescending, and argumentative. Matt was brought in to help resolve the situation, and we ended up using proper materials for the task that I found with the help of a local distributor... again, work/management that I should not have had to do. 4. Matt, after I signed the contract, was largely absent from the day-to-day management activities of the project. IMO, for the premium that Matt/Sawhorse was charging, I should not have had to stay on top of Justin and Vis Viva the way I did, and the quality of the project management and technical competence should have been much higher. 5. The electrical, plumbing, drywall, and flooring subcontractors were great.

I had Earthly Matters come and give me a quote and re-stain my deck. I signed a contract for $1900…read morere-staining the deck 10x10ft. and stairs. A job that took 2 days. Within 11 months the mildew started to appear. When I complained they simply stated that there was no guarantee on decks. Then why give me a very impressive brochure just turn down the job. No one wants a job done with no guarantee on the work performed. I had paid less when I did the whole deck 3 years ago in 3 colors and now within 11 months I had lost $1900! I would never ever hire them again, and if one does, please make sure there is written warrantee.

During the job the crew discovered some bad pieces of siding that needed to be repaired and Pat had me review them on site, sent pictures for my record, and sent updated costs so that I was aware of the impact to the overall project budget. At the end of the job he made sure the crew took care of every item on the punch list to get fixed before asking for final payment. No home improvement job is going to go perfectly but I feel that Earthly Matters delivers a consistent customer experience not just when they are quoting your job, but all the way through to the end.
