My cab driver on the way from the airport to hotel suggested this place. He said it was a classic burger with no thrills. Something I have been trying to find after all the disgusting burgers that London serves. No clue where London gets their meat but it is bad. Anyway, I won't rant anymore about that. We were so happy Rick's was open late all the time we were here! Hamburgers, fries, and chicken wings. Not Buffalo, just deliciously crispy fried wings with no sauce on them. They give you two cups one with a great tasting tomato Mexican salsa and the other with white tartar that tasted like it had goat cheese. I don't like goat cheese. These two sauces are for dunking your fries in too. Their fries are thin, crispy and very good!! The hamburgers are awesome too. Rick's doesn't look like anything special from the outside. Even once inside, you have your doubts. With its neon flashing sign and black and white checkered floor, the decor is tacky and modest. There are only about 10 dinky plastic tables anchored to the ground and the place is never packed in the day. But at night, drunk people are spilling out of this greasy spoon. The food is really what draws in the crowd. Rick's does burgers like no other takeaway restaurant in Dublin. The burgers have that homemade taste and feel. Big chunks of tomato, a big round patty that can barely contain all the meat sandwiched between the bread. This place is so much better than any of the kebab takeaways and it costs the same. Friendly chat is guaranteed and the odd sing-song may occur - I was once treated to a startlingly accurate rendition of "oh, bodyform. Bodyform for you...." (remember the ad) by a determined karaoke king who grabbed the mic from an unsuspecting employee! As the name might suggest, burgers are a popular choice. They look homemade, meaty and hearty but I opt for the garlic-cheese chips every time. I can definitely vouch for them at 3am, it might be a different story in the cold light of day. Rick's Burger harks back to a simpler time when to be called a burger it didn't need to be harrisa spiced, smothered with marmalade, sandwiched between a brioche roll and impaled with a wooden skewer. Now that was a tasty burger! Basically having not eaten for most of the day a midnight trip here was the best idea ever and right on the money! I went for the Hawaiian burger which was packing some serious beef wallop and the chips were pretty tasty - saying that this was after about 7 pints so maybe a return trip would be in order to be able to properly give it a more detailed description. So let me start with the positive about this place, the burger I had was absolutely delicious and pretty reasonably priced being under 10 euro. Also the garlic fries were yummy, the bad in short is that it took me a really long time to get to those fries. I substituted regular fries for cheese fries with garlic and paid an extra €2 for it although was disappointed to find the cheese didn't come melted. I asked them to melt it on it and the woman got obviously upset and said they don't have a microwave. I asked her if she could just set it under the heat lamp for the fries to at least soften it and she agreed. She then did not do so (I could see from where I was sitting) and she brought them back, I apologized and politely asked if she she was unable to melt it if I could just have fries without cheese and she was visibly angry having rolled her eyes at myself and my friend before chucking them in the garbage with a fair amount of force. She continued to glare at us and stare while we ate and it was really uncomfortable. When we went to leave and I returned the trays I asked what her name was to which she responded "why?" before she then just said no, clearly because she knew I was going to complain to the owner or write a review due to her outlandish behavior. All in all, the good was great, but definitely not worth the way you're treated to get it. I will never be back to this place and I urge others to avoid it, there are plenty of places in Dublin where you can get great food without sacrificing service. read more

Ok, here goes a review from an American. I think you have to separate the American reviews from the Irish ones just as you would if there were an Irish restaurant in America. The burgers were okay. Yes, I'm used to pretty good quality burgers as that's pretty much our national food. It's better than any chippy/take away/kebab shop for sure (that stuff is nearly inedible - like the cheapest pre-made frozen patties you find in the grocer's freezer in the states - and you're paying 8 or 9 euro for ONE, ugh!!). So, for an Irish burger shop, yes, it's pretty darn good and I'm sure if I had been drunk, it would be spectacular after some of the burgers I've had out here. Grated cheese on a burger (and not melted) is very bizarre and almost sacrilegious in my opinion. I'd rather have cheese slices (american cheese to the yanks) than that stuff and I hate cheese slices. I'd prefer to have my burger cooked to order but I think that's against the law here. Also, they should give you the option of grilled or fresh onions. I hope this didn't come off as overly critical. That's a lie, I don't really care how it came off. OK so it is not the most appealing of places and the atmosphere is like a bar fight waiting to happen, and it is not the most healthiest of foods but damn it Rick's burgers taste so freakin good after a night on the beer! There are many late night grab a bite places on Dame Street and if you don't fancy a kebab then head to Rick's for a very tasty and big and satisfying burger! It is 3 AM, and if you are in this neighborhood at 3 AM it is because you probably have had more than 1 or 2 drinks. We were expecting some pretty horrible food, but we gotten to Dublin late, and we hit the bars pretty hard, and needed some sustenance. We were pretty much blown away with our burgers how solid the meat, and overall construction of the burger. BEST burger I have had since I moved to Europe (two and a half years ago)... the only rivals to it are in America, so Rick's title as best burger in Dublin is safe! And for your information, I went stone, cold sober. The staff were friendly and very efficient! And I was impressed with the rapid filling of orders. The chips... amazing! What I actually loved was when there were some chips left under the hot lamp that weren't quite finished, she tossed them back in to the fryer for a second go... I got those ones and they were golden perfection... the kind that are a bit crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside... seriously... heaven. And the burger was cooked to perfection, it had good flavor, it was juicy, and it was meaty! It was dressed simply with lettuce, tomato, chopped onion (kudos for this), and ketchup and mayo... and that was it... Just as I like it. I don't even mind the interior... it is a fast food place, if you don't like it, take your food home! They do take away and they do it well... my meal held up on my half mile walk back to my hotel... in fact it was still piping hot! The three things I do mind, however: 1) I did think it was a bit overpriced... just under €9 for an original meal. Yes, there was a lot of food, but still it is a burger joint. 2) The size of the drinks... the cup isn't even big enough to hold a can of soda. 3) The ketchup does not taste like ketchup. Rick's, on the corner of Dame St and George's St, is somewhat of a Dublin institution. Sure, it looks kind of scuzzy and unless someone introduced you to it, you'd be unlikely to decide to go there, but once you have eaten there, oh man, you really don't look back. The burgers there are sooo good, probably the best burgers in Dublin, it's amazing that more people don't eat in there when they're sober. Actually, it isn't that amazing, because as interiors go, Rick's is pretty horrible and unappetising. Plus the burgers aren't cheap. But man, the burgers, the burgers. The meat in them is so nice, cooked perfectly, and if you order a cheeseburger, you don't get any of this one easi-single on the burger bullshit, Rick's give you heap of grated cheese on there (and grated cheese is nicer than slices. Weird that the same food can taste different when cut-up in different ways, but there you go). When you're twisted drunk, Rick's is your only man. There's always a good bit of banter in the place too, and it's really good to go there with one of dainty, always nicely turned out female friends, and then to see her with mayonnaise and grated cheese all over her face. The first time I visited Rick's was my first night living in Dublin, and there began my exciting love affair. The place doesn't look like it would do good burgers, and it's not somewhere I would even dream of going, had I not been introduced by a (very trustworthy) friend. I get the chicken burger with plenty of the sauce (God only knows what's in it, but it's VERY good) and fried onions. I used to get the chips too, but I find I'm too full after the burger (they're huge). A good thing to note is that they don't have that bread-crumbed chicken 'fillet' in their burgers - oh no - these are real chicken fillets, which, in an establishment like Rick's, came as a pleasant surprise. I meant to review Ricks when it was put to me do to a list of chippers/takeaway joints. It's a place I'd often meant to go but never did until one night I bit the bullet. The burgers are very good. If you'd rather not taste the rubbery burgers from McDonalds or Burger King then Rick is your man. Just don't order chips. The chips are awful...and to me chips are an integral part of the takeaway experience. Everything else is of secondary importance. Honestly, I won't be back when the chips are that poor.
