Such a great place. I bought a charcoal bbq and the charcoal grate that came with the bbq had a raised center channel down the middle of the grate that I wanted removed. I emailed Rick's and Ryan replied with a time window I could swing by. They removed the center channel and made the grate flush, which is exactly what I needed. Would definitely recommend this place! Very professional and kind.

Two metal closet poles.. DIY project. Rick trimmed the top for a customized fit for my closet.

Rick's is amazing! Found them on Google Maps and did a quick review of client comments... I was satisfied with my research and decided to give them a try. Upon arrival Ryan was very friendly and helpful. He stopped what he was doing and did a quick job for me on the spot!! I needed a 9-10" trim on two metal pole rods for my DIY Closet! Ryan made the cut and it took less then a minute!! Thanks Rick's

Last summer, I bought this sectional dining set for my patio. I loved it but the design of arm rest on either end made it difficult to get in and out without moving the table. Because of the umbrella and heavy base, moving the table was not an easy option. I considered getting rid of the set and buying a new one but started thinking about the possibility of finding a welder who could change the arm rest. So this morning I googled "best welders in Torrance" and Rick's Welding popped up. Via email, I sent him a picture of what the arm rest looked like and then I drew what I thought I would like it change to. He told me to bring the pieces over to his shop. We met a couple hours later, discussed the options and he gave me a quote. It seemed quite reasonable and he was so easy to work with. He told me it might take a couple days but he would call me when it was ready. Well imagine how surprised I was when he called me a couple hours later to say the job was done! As it turned out, I happened to pop in on a day where they had some free time. So I went back to pick up the pieces a few hours later and was thrilled with the outcome. Great service for a reasonable price!

Ask the Community - Rick's Welding & Fabrication

How much would you charge to to cut off a metal piece off a computer monitor clamp?

It would be easier if I saw a picture of what needed to be cut, but either way it sounds very simple. I would probably charge $10-$20 or just ask for an honest Yelp review and do the job for free.

We tried calling a few others. but none of them answered. THE GOOD: This is an old school machine shop that works on more than cylinder heads. Two brothers own the shop and one of the owners son, Johnny, is awesome, very communicative and a really nice guy! The prices they charge "seem" to be very reasonable (I have nothing to base this on). THE BAD: This is an old school machine shop that works on more than cylinder heads. 1. They are VERY old school, to the point that their system for tracking "what parts belong to who" consists of your name & number scribbled on the back of a business card that is stuck into an opening in whatever part you dropped off, nothing else. 2. Out of the 6 guys that work there, only one, Johnny, speaks English. 3. The phone rarely gets answered. 4. It looks more like a scrap yard than a machine shop: (literally) tons of cylinder heads, engine blocks, crankshafts and camshafts, etc everywhere! THE REALLY BAD (in my case): They called me about 11 am to say my heads were ready to be picked up. As I was busy, I didn't get there until around 4 pm. I walked in, speak to Johnny and let him know I was here to pick up my small block Ford heads. He looks... and looks... talks to another guy there... and looks, then makes a phone call. He then tells me, "a guy was here about 10 minutes ago looking for some small block Ford heads and they gave him your heads and he will be back in about 10 minutes". WTF?!? It was more like 20 mins, but FORTUNATELY this guy pulls up with my heads in the back of his truck. Johnny did apologize a few times about the confusion. I comment on how disorganized they are and he apologizes again. I pay my $240 (no courtesy discount), I thank Johnny and leave. THE VERDICT: Obviously their error was corrected after the guy who had my parts returned them. I'm hoping my experience is a very rare occurrence and no one else has to go through this. Otherwise my cylinder heads were machined as I asked.

I took them parts and prints with close tolerances and walked away with a phenomenal result! I worked with Thomas who is extremely experienced and competent. He understood my requirements in minutes, and made the specified cuts with incredible precision. Because these parts were for a custom car, Thomas leveraged his strong background in machining and fabrication to provide technical advice throughout the process which improved the solution. It was a pleasure working with someone who took pride in their work, seeking perfection, and really caring that the outcome met my needs. Thomas made the job (including the timing) important to him because it was important to me. When I called, I asked if they could expedite my job because I suffered a setback from another machine shop. Thomas said bring the parts down and if the work was not too complex, he would do it while I waited. I hung up the phone with him at 5:30 PM and drove from the South Bay to Long Beach. I was back with my parts done, home eating dinner by 8:30 PM, three hours total, and paid exactly what I was quoted on the phone. Thomas' values, honesty, and commitment to high standards are a breath of fresh air. I recommend you call Custom Machining & Fabrication for your next and all your future machining and fabrication needs. How many trades people can you say this about?

It looked like my only option to get my electric seats working was to replace the seat rails from the Porsche factory at a cost of $1,200 per seat. Thomas told me he could make the part and he did. It was an exact replica of the piece that broke. His price for the part was $90 per piece. Photos of what he made for me are attached. The part is 1-1/8" x 12/16" x 3/8". I got two sets (two pieces per seat) from him so I would have a back-up in case the part broke again.

Everything is good when they are TAKING your money and business. But, once it goes the opposite way (refund), Roger gets NASTY -- I didn't see this side of him before, always with a smile because while taking money in. I brought some parts to be replicated; 1" shaft with the center with a 2" diameter cylinder with 1" flanged bearings. I was suggested another way to "make" the part that would make everything more "simplified" for me, okay, sure. I wasn't sure what he meant, but after minutes of trying to explain to me, I just went with whatever Roger suggested since he would know better about the mechanics of machine parts, etc., He just told me that I would have to source the bearings myself, which is what I did. He asked me if the diameter could be smaller and I said yes. So I trusted his word and went with it. When I picked up the item, he said, "If it doesn't work out, just bring it back". The thing is, I complained after because what he sold me for almost $400, was NOT SOMETHING HE "MADE". It was a part that could be bought online (~16", 1" shaft with 2 shaft collars), which can be found on Amazon for $35 (shaft) + $10 (2 collars). He then said that he bought it McMasterCarr, then quickly changed his wording to "WE MADE IT". So which is it? (I will never know, but my assumption is he got it at McMasterCarr, as he first stated, or another retailer). Then he said, "I'M NOT HERE TO SAVE YOU MONEY." JUST WOW!! It's my fault for not understanding what he was trying to sell me, but it's obvious my lack of knowledge was taken advantage of--I let Roger do what he does. I believe there is a big difference between MAKING something and up charging for labor, etc., vs. buying $40 dollars worth of parts and CHARGING 9X-10X more!! Especially, to someone (me) whom he kept calling "friend" after all the visits/business I gave him. When he did this "work", I also dropped off a small part that had a broken screw stuck in it. He said it was FREE OF CHARGE to extract it. Anyway, when he agreed to refund me for the $400 (16" piece of 1" shaft), BUT he charged me $85 for the screw extraction that he told me that was free! From ~$400 refund, I received $85 less. This costs him nothing (almost literally) to fix easily. $85 FOR A SCREW EXTRACTION--HIGHWAY ROBBERY!!!! He gave it back to me, with a new screw, "I also gave you a screw". (Oh, gee, Thanks, I guess.)--But I didn't need that screw as I have 100's (if not 1000's) of these screws for my parts -- so he acted like giving me this screw in place of the broken one is a huge hook up, after I spent thousands and thousands of dollars here. I paid for this with my personal credit card, but he made out the refund check to the company I work for. So I asked him if he could cut the check out in my name since I'm the one who paid for it. He said, "just give it to your company and have them pay you." I explained to him that I can't do that because of accounting issues, etc. He got mad and he snatched the check out of my hand with an attitude. This right was the last straw. I was still going to give him more business (which I even told him, thanks for the refund and making this right, I'll be back). He told me, "I DONT CARE ABOUT MAKING THINGS RIGHT AND WHAT YOU THINK, I DONT NEED TO RESTORE FAITH IN YOU OR YOUR COMPANY". Okay, fine. ^Great attitude, perfect way to lose business after the fact that I stated that I hope this one issue won't affect future business and that I would be bringing more business. Roger shouldn't be interacting with customers on the front line if that's his attitude and represents your company. On the other hand, Alex is very polite. While Roger was deflecting the situation, blaming it on me, arguing who said what, this and that. Alex is the one who apologized on behalf of C&H Metal with a smile on his face, while Roger was steaming mad at the situation -- just the way he snatched the check out of my hand says it all. ALEX IS THE REAL MVP at C&H Metal, too bad he's not at top management, because management up top is clearly lacking customer service skills and lacking know-how to keep the customer acquisition costs low. I can bet they'll see this review and Google what CAC is because they don't know. Or maybe, they are making so much money, they don't care how they lose a few customers the way they do. Roger (mgmt) just knows how to take money with a smile on their face until you complain about something, then it gets nasty. This is the type of business you don't want to give business to. If you do give business to them, good luck. Hopefully, it's a short stint because eventually an issue will arise, and Roger has a short fuse, and you may not like the way he handles it. This experience was a blessing in disguise because I found a better and CHEAPER shop to do work for me.
