I contracted James from JDX Home inspections to do my new home inspection for a property I was…read morepurchasing. I saw all his 5-star reviews and he is a small startup mom and pop company, the kind we like to support. I was traveling into Valparaiso from Pennsylvania for the inspection. I asked him if I could be there for the inspection and his response was, I'm Sorry, you cannot be here for the inspection but, I will have you arrive after I complete the inspection and I will take the time and explain and show you any deficiencies that I find. I thought this was unusual as from what I thought, it was normal for the client to be there for the inspection. I did some research and came across this article ( https://www.inspectorproinsurance.com/business/should-clients-attend-inspections/ ) that explains three thoughts on home inspections and gives the pros and cons of each type. After reading the article it makes more sense to have him complete a thorough job working uninterrupted so he can concentrate on the task at hand and work more efficiently not having to take time to explain everything or have you in his way. He checked every window, light switch, receptacle and door, checked out the HVAC, Electrical, and plumbing systems, including all appliances, roof and crawlspace. He used high Teck infrared camera, borescope, and other tools of the trade. I arrived as he was finishing up, he took the time to do a complete walk through with me showing and explaining any deficiencies either marginal or major. He then sent me a complete report within hours that included images and videos of the inspection and addressed areas that needed repair or replacement. He worked quickly, efficiently and was extremely thorough. I am recommending him with 5 stars.

Scheduling was a breeze and Nate was on time…read more Nate was very thorough, he took his time and noted everything he found. As he found things I thought I should remember I'd start writing a note, he'd say "don't worry it will be in the report". I was a bit worried as reading a home inspection report can be complicated. Nate's report not only detailed everything, it had pictures of each specific area, so I had a visual to go along with reading the report. Everything was clear, noting something that needs attention now, down the road or just general maintenance. Service is in the details, at one point Nate was inspecting the circuit breaker box and noted that a screw was missing on the panel. He stopped, went to his vehicle and came back with the appropriate screw, immediately fixing the issue. He said that was easier than putting it in the report :-) When someone takes care of the little things I'm confident he'll do a great job with the bigger things. I would highly recommend United Home Inspections!

After performing multiple re-inspections for the same investment property, we had to keep chasing down Nate to explain the results. As a customer, it's like I'm burdening him. Plus, he doesn't provide his phone number. You have to call his office, who then messages him, and then he will call you back. But, if you miss his call, he will not leave a message. And then you have to do the process all over again to have him call you back. This was very frustrating. If you are looking for an inspector / company who has good customer service, look elsewhere.

He pointed out things to me as he went along. The report was very detailed. Several things he pointed out, he told me they were a concern but not immediately. But they would be fine for a few years. Other things he pointed needed attention right away. I would recommend this company to anyone needing a home inspection.

I had an inspection done for an older house I was purchasing. I felt confident after the inspector…read moreleft; however, after moving into my house, I soon discovered something major that was missed. When investigating the best way to remove tiles from my basement, I discovered my floor tiles could be asbestos. This was never mentioned by the inspector. In fact, he told us we should replace the flooring because it was cracking and damaged. I sent a sample out to a lab and my fears were confirmed. With a one year old daughter, this is not acceptable conditions to have in my house. Now I am stuck paying $3000 to have the asbestos removed because the floor tiles are in such bad shape. I contacted NWI Inspection Service and spoke with Dennis. He seemed to be apologetic, but mentioned that he cannot for sure say whether or not I was offered asbestos testing over the phone. I told him I was not, but regardless, an inspector should suspect asbestos floor tiles and suggest testing be done. This would've allowed me to negotiate a better price on the house. He agreed with me. After we hung up, I forwarded him the emails that were about scheduling the appointment to prove there was no mention of asbestos testing. I told him I believed he should pay for it and my family attorney believed he should as well. He responded claiming that this is not something a trained inspector would be able to notice by the naked eye except through a lab test, which I didn't ask for. He then copied the pre-agreement I signed where it states they are not responsible for testing or mentioning hazardous materials. As a business, I find this to be completely unacceptable. Are we supposed to ask about asbestos testing before we suspect asbestos in the house? Shouldn't the inspector tell us he suspects it? What is the point of an inspection if they won't point those things out? We relied upon NWI Home Inspection Service to make sure my house was safe for my family. If the inspector had told us he suspected asbestos, it would've been taken care of before we ever bought the house. If you see this company and need an inspection, I would advise you to move on. Besides the asbestos floor tile that was missed, two leaking hot water pipes were missed as well. This is very disappointing and very costly!
