When I initially started at Shift Above 2, my confidence level was basically zero due to frustrating and unsuccessful attempts at learning prior. After giving Mike background on my previous experiences and how i was now feeling about learning, he immediately established a comfortable learning environment by ensuring that the pace of the lessons were entirely dictated by my comfort level. In those first few sessions, I really appreciated that he was highly perceptive. ​Whenever I struggled with a maneuver or began to show signs of distress, he didn't push me. Instead, he would alter the current technique or introduce a different approach that was much better suited to my skill and confidence level. This adaptive teaching style was fundamental in preventing old feelings of frustration from resurfacing. Soon after, I found myself driving confidently in moderate traffic on main roads and performing K-turns and backing up with very little nervousness. She is very alert and will point out if something you are doing is incorrect, immediately teaching you the correct way afterwards. Mind you, some people might be too shy or nervous to ask questions (especially teens), but if I hadn't pushed this guy to explain I would have walked away with absolutely nothing. The only time I heard him laugh was when he was making fun of a mistake one of his past students made. It was like being back with my abusive parent again and having to tiptoe around one of their miserable moods. Then when I called the office to tell them the instructor was miserable the woman I spoke to interrupted me and started talking over me. I don't care how long he's been with your guys. That's not how you treat people. He did drive me home at the end of it. But I would have much rather he just treated me like a human being and left me at the meet up point, than treating me like garbage the whole time and then trying to make up for it later. After looking through everything, I was impressed at how the material was presented and the study guide was written in an easy to follow and understand format. I am learning things about dog and puppy behavior that I never knew, and now I am gaining an understanding of why my dog is the way he is and what makes him who he is!
