Good place to have a coffee break if you have a museum ticket and are perusing this enormous and fabulous museum. It's inside a giant glass covered area connected to the museum. The Café is open from 9am to 6pm. It's only accessible with a ticket to the museum until 5pm. From 5 to 6pm you can enter without an entrance ticket. Those are also the same rules for the museum gift shop nearby. I wouldn't really bother going here just for coffee or a snack after 5pm if you aren't visiting the museum as it's not worth it, but it is a good place to take a coffee break or snack when you're in the museum. Loved this museum café -- so good we came twice! We first stopped by before hitting the museum because, honestly, we were starving. lol Then after spending six hours wandering around the exhibits, we ended up right back here again for dessert and coffee -- no regrets! The museum closes at 5pm, but they let guests linger a bit. We stayed until around 6:30pm, enjoying our treats in peace. The food here was surprisingly delicious for a museum café, and I have a theory -- maybe it's because there's a Michelin-starred restaurant inside the same museum? Either that chef has a hand in it, or the museum just really cares about good food. Either way, we weren't complaining. Service was friendly and efficient, though their mobile ordering app never worked (I tried twice!). In the end, ordering from an actual human turned out to be the best solution -- classic always wins. For lunch, we had the chicken salad, mushroom soup, and bitterballen -- all excellent. While the museum is great, their cafe was a bit of a miss for me. Limited options, overpriced menu, and while they would like you to order via QR code/phone, the options to pay did not include Apple pay so a server had to come over and take my order the old-fashioned way. The RijksMuseum Cafe is to the right, as you enter the Museum and up the stairs above the Gift Shop. We came here to cooled our heels, after a long day of appreciating all things Rijks and letting our wife's slog on. LOL The food is exceptionally good and they have a pretty diverse Menu (photo). We started off by ordering some water and coffee. Yes, you order both still, or fizzy water in Europe by the bottle. I ordered an Apple Pie, made with Dutch apples, currants, raisins, almond paste, Cinnamon €5.45. My wingman ordered a Chickpea Burger something or other, on Turkish bread, vegan garlic yogurt, paprika, tomato for €13.25. I tried it, and it wasn't too bad (photos). Here's the funny part. We had a great lunch here - service is very quick/easy which allows you to maximize your time touring the museum! We sat at the end of a high-top, and the QR code where you are sitting allows you to order online, and the food is delivered to your location when ready. I had the still life - vegetable soup, cheese sandwich, and fresh fruit, along with an iced latte. Bob had a blueberry muffin that he really enjoyed. We spent our Christmas Day at Rijksmuseum last year. When it was time for lunch, we logically just came down to the museum cafe which is conveniently located in the atrium. Even though it was a public holiday and the majority of people were visiting families, there was still a decent turnout here. We secured the last available table before a line started to form. The workers were in good spirit despite not having the day off. But it was obvious that they could have used a few more helpers that day. Our waitress didn't smile but she was very dedicated to her job. We had a question about one of the dishes. She was trying but had a hard time explaining to us. She even went to the back and asked but no luck. We really appreciated her effort! It wasn't a big deal really and we didn't mind trying something we had no clue about. It was like opening a Christmas present...well kinda :-) The Beef Croquettes were nicely seasoned but somewhat mushy. They were similar to FEBO's but more expensive. The Primal Dutch was a puff pastry (like a turnover) with poultry ragout and porcino. It was savory and the aroma of the anise mushrooms was delightful. We couldn't end the meal without dessert on Christmas! So, we also ordered "Roosje Zonder Doornen" which translates as "rose without thorns." Cool name! Great taste! Instead of the alcohol of the same name, here it was a dessert waffle filled with white chocolate and Haagse Hopjes coffee candy crunch with pears that had been poached in the 60 proof rose liqueur. It was delicious! The cafe lounge is a cool place to hang out and to take a break from the museum tour. I like how the skylight brightens the whole area. It can get a little noisy however. All in all, we had a very pleasant holiday meal inside this fabulous museum. read more

Whatever time you plan for lunch here, you best double that estimate, at a minimum! Unless you have all the time in the world while you're on vacation, don't come here, unless you're fine with wasting your valuable vacation minutes (which you will never ever get back), waiting in a museum cafe for basic service and food. Have lunch BEFORE you come to the Rijks!! We waited only about 10 minutes for a table, but that's when things took a quick downturn... Upon being seated, we waited and waited. 20 minutes later, still no one ever came to our table. Yes, an entire 20 minutes! I was getting suspicious as I was looking around in the full cafe, and noticed hardly any tables had food on them. Instead, what was noticeably prominent were all the customers turning their heads around, scanning the restaurant for a waiter. I did make direct eye contact with one of the servers covering our section, but he quickly looked away, without even an attempt to signal an acknowledgement. No excuse! I then observed a confrontation between a much older gentleman seated next to us and the hostess, with a trainee badge. He was yelling at her for the delay in getting his bill. I felt so bad for the trainee, as she looked so befuddled. He finally sat back down and tried to calm his elderly wife who was also upset, but no one ever came. This did it for me! This wasn't a good sign of things to come. Hubby agreed and we left, something we've never ever done anywhere! My conclusion was if it was so much like pulling teeth just to get started, I knew it was just going to be the same in getting the food, getting the check, etc. I don't have time for this on most days at home, and I most definitely don't have time for this when I have limited vacation time. We were scheduled for a tour in the museum afterwards, and I knew there was absolutely no way in H*** we were going to make that tour if we continued with the debacle of so-called service here! read more

The espresso was very bitter and hot chocolate was OK. We liked how the drinks come with a little cookie. Service was ok. When we first sat down, a customer was arguing with a waitress and another customer. We assumed it was because the waiter seemed to be gossiping and not working. The raised area kind of like a balcony or veranda and full of light is the area that is the Rijksmuseum Cafe. It's a nice area to rest after spending hours afoot in the Rijksmuseum. Typically it's a busy area as there can be 15000 to 18000 people strolling about perusing the art and collections of artifacts so you can bet that more than just some of them will stop here for a snack, entree or something to drink. It can be a loud bustling area with so many people talking at the same time about the works of art or the artifacts they've just seen. The menu isn't all that extensive but it does offer snacks, salads, soups and sandwiches. The service is good also. Despite it being busy the table turnover was relatively fast so the wait was quite short before being seated. I had the mustard soup with eel and bacon that also came with a roll with butter on the side. My companion had a salad with salmon. Both were tasty and the presentation was good. The offering for beer wasn't extensive so we settled for two large local beers. read more

This cafe is located in the lobby of the Rijksmuseum. It's a great place to take a break after viewing all of the beautiful artwork located within the museum. SX tried the ice coffee, which was served from a little bottle. I tried the mint tea and the apple cake. The mint tea was pretty standard, as it's just hot water, a bunch of fresh mint, and honey. It came with a small almond cookie on the side. The apple cake was chock full of apples and raisins, but was cold and hard to eat. It fell apart quite easily and was quite messy. Ah museum cafes! Is there anything better than a slice of cake after a long day of being cultured? Of course, sometimes museums are more about the museums and less about the cafes. Fortunately, the Rijksmuseum Cafe takes the cafe part very seriously. They have hostesses with ear pieces and super efficient staff. The service is fast, the cakes are good, and the presentation is lovely. The only reason this doesn't get a perfect score is because my milk was sour with little bits in it that floated in my tea. Of course, it was quickly replaced with a new, fresh cup of tea that was perfect. Overall, I'd definitely recommend it! read more

Went here last month as we were starving after visiting the museum and we still had a few hours until our dinner reservations. OMG what a surprise! I personally usually avoid restaurants in museums etc due to lack of an exciting menu and outrageous overpricing however this was such a pleasant surprise. I would go there just to get their meat and cheese platter with a great local beer or glass of wine. We had exactly that and it was yummy! Service was okay, not bad, not great. You need to find your own dirty table, ask for it to be cleaned etc.. No checking on you or anything I'm used to here in the States but I got what I ordered and it was delish! Really nice café in the entrance hall at Rijksmuseum. Spacious and with a great view for looking at other tourists. We went here for breakfast before visiting the exhibitions and were very satisfied. When I ordered I was expecting nothing more then an average cold pastrami sandwich, but when the sandwich entered my mouth I was placed into pastrami heaven. The OM sandwich with beef and liver was tasty but the liver was a bit overpowering (could be how it is supposed to be but I don't know). The herring and beets was very good though. I got seated soon enough, but was plonked on a table in front of a massive delft piece, meaning I couldn't see a thing or had any space. It took an absolute age for them to come and take my order. Then another age for them to deliver it. The poor woman next to me got half her order and no drinks; so I gave her some of my water. Trying to get the bill was like you were on the waltz at the fair, trying to scrabble to their attention when walking past. I would strongly advise that you eat before you get here. I think the main attraction of this place is that it's located inside the famous Rijkmuseum. If you're tired after browsing one of the greatest art collections in Europe or you need a boost to go in, this place can be an alternative. The service is quite fast and efficient at start, which means you don't get to stand in queue for long. Chairs are comfortable and our waitress was very friendly and smiley. However, my friend order got mixed up (by another waitress). She ordered a latte and the older gentleman next to her ordered a capuccino but she got a capuccino (and the waitress spilled the coffee as well! but she offered a replacement and gave us five extra cookies that came with the coffee) and the man got her latte, but since nobody complained, I guess the waitress had no idea of the mistake that she had done. I got my rose wine that was quite drinkable so I had no complaint. Overall, the price is quite affordable for a fancy museum cafe. read more

The setting of the cafe is very beautiful, in the very tastefully remodeled, modern atrium of the Rijksmuseum. It's very light-filled and airy. The food here was above average for a museum cafe, though it was a bit overpriced (for two dishes and two coffees, I believe we ended up spending upwards of 40 Euro, or 60 USD). The line was quite long (we probably waited 30 minutes before we were seated), so if you're getting hangry, I'd recommend keeping a snack in your bag to eat while you wait. read more

We have a little obsession with lunches at museum cafes, and the one at the Rijksmuseum is not a disappointment. We intended to stop in for tea but saw the beautiful entrees coming out of the kitchen and decided to stay for lunch. Much of the seating is at communal tables, so you have to be ok with strangers dipping in on your conversation, but the food is worth any potential invasion of privacy. Someone got the pastrami, and they said it was the best they've ever had. Leave it to the Dutch to make something as gross as pastrami into a delicious masterpiece. read more
