Best Mexican food in the state AT LEAST. Incredible service. A bit pricey but I'd pay more.

Coming from California, we are somewhat snobby Mexican food eaters. So we're always hesitant to try Mexican food out of state. We started off with the chips and they were perfect. I ordered the birria tacos and they were the best I have ever had. The meat was cooked to perfection with its tenderness as well as the seasoned broth it was cooked in. Perfectly seasoned. We were driving through The Dalles and stopped for the night, asked the hotel for their Mexican restaurant recommendation. Without hesitation she suggested Rio Grande. (There was another Mexican restaurant closer but she did not recommend it). We arrived to Rio Grande 45 minutes before closing and were told to take our time as there was no rush to drink and eat. The salsa that came with the free chips was phenomenal! Yummy! Margs were good and our food, carne asada burrito and spicy butterflied shrimp were excellent. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's a small family run restaurant as we met the mother and an aunt who was there for dinner with friends.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We are planning our trip back to stop in for a late lunch. Excellent food and service. My favorite place to eat in The Dalles. Their steak burrito is a must try.

Rio Grande didn't wow me and at the same time I enjoyed it, so this is a bit of a wishy washy review to write. Our meals were pretty standard for Mexican restaurant fare, though hubby thought the green sauce was a bit sour. My black beans were perfectly cooked and seasoned. Definitely my favorite thing! But what really stood out was the young man who waited on us. He was happy and kind, attentive but didn't hover. Great service! read more

We tried the newest dine-in Mexican restaurant & decided it's the best sit-down Mexican restaurant in town! The salsa served with the complimentary chips needs to be bottled & sold! It is fresh & full-bodied, yet mild, and has almost a chunky but pulverized texture. We couldn't get enough of this salsa! We ordered the Enchiladas Verdes & it was delicious! Our waiter was very attentive & friendly! The restaurant is clean & colorful! The portions are large & competitively priced! We think this is the most "authentic" sit-down Mexican restaurant in town! read more

Had lunch here on 11/7/24. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The outside is not impressive, but...inside, the décor is well-done, with tiles, murals, and comfortable booths.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Menu is vast, with plenty of vegetarian offerings (why we stopped here). We shared veggie fajitas and tacos de Papa (with mashed potatoes!). Both were fresh-prepared with fresh ingredients, not buried in a ton of cheese, and tasty! Rice flavorful and not overdone, refrieds and whole black beans delicious; everything was 5-star, food wise. Service was excellent (owner's daughter), and we hope they keep doing what they do and do well. [[HIGHLIGHT]]My only gripe (not worthy of a star deduction) was the music--not overly loud except the bass was turned up high so that when a tune came on with heavy bass it was "feel-able."[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Granted, I am an old man and this is a complaint I make in many establishments (music is usually too loud for conversation). We loved this place when it first opened. The chef, the mother was super nice and the food was different and very good...The kids run the restaurant and are married. We went there for V-day and the food was not so good anymore (perhaps they were too busy) - but our waitress, the daughter was rude to us for asking her a question...we should of walked out. I wish her husband had served us, he is great. Maybe she was having a bad night, but it turned me off, so I don't think we will be coming back anytime soon. read more

I'm not sure why there aren't more reviews; this place has been open for almost a year. We went today for lunch, and loved it. We had enchiladas Suizas, and they were spot-on. Even their beans and rice had great flavor. Cocktails were hand-crafted (no margarita mix here), and delicious. Service was friendly, prompt, and efficient. I will say that the place doesn't look like much from the street, but give it a try. We thought it was the best sit-down Mexican food in the gorge (both sides) read more

Friendly and speedy service. I've had multiple different dishes and have liked them all. Some meal portions are average while other menu items are larger. This place has an inviting atmosphere and some of the staff are owners/family so they really seem to care about the restaurant and customer experiences. Good service and good food! read more

Our first visit. My husband ordered the Mexican pizza and I ordered the veggie enchilada. Both were flavorful and attractively served. Salsa and sauces excellent! Wait staff friendly and checked on us often. The decor is festive and colorful. Very clean. I appreciated the music was not too loud and very pleasant. We will be back! read more

It was busy when we arrived for holiday lunch hour. Took about three minutes to get seated. The waiter was nice and very personable. Salsa was pretty good for table salsa. Chips were unremarkable. I had chicken verde enchiladas and my GF had chili rellenos. The food itself was unremarkable. My enchiladas needed more sauce and overall it was a little bland. The same could be said for the chili rellenos. Not good but not bad. Kind of expensive for sit down in a restaurant with such an authentic ambiance. Portion size was average if a little small. Overall I have had much better Mexican food both here in The Dalles as well as throughout California. I was a chef for twenty years. I will be reviewing all Mexican restaurants in The Dalles this coming year except one. It is getting reviewed based a prior experience. It's sets the low of the bar so far. Stay tuned. read more
