We just spent the weekend at this hotel for a wedding in the family suite. The room was not ready when we wanted to check in, so they told us it would be ready soon. 3 hours later, we tried to check in again, the room was still being cleaned. So we waited again. When we got into the room, it appeared clean. However upon pulling out the pull out couch, there was garbage, sand and hair in the bed. We asked for new linens for the bed. 2 hours later, house keeping dropped off sheets, they did not change them or take the dirty sheets. Upon getting into the king bed, we found several long black hairs. No one in our party has long black hair. The fan above the stove did not work, so whenever you cooked the whole room would be smokey and the smell would just sit there. The maintenance man had come to look at the fan, apparently he needed to order a part, which is understandable. But we were not informed that it would not be fixed. We had gone to the pool as a family and while we were gone housekeeping came into our room. They did not change out the towels or take the over flowing garbage, they did however lock the slider door. Which locked us out of the room. We had to get another key from the front desk. We had to take the garbage out ourselves. On the 2nd day we had to ask for clean towels twice before they brought them down to us. And then they didnt want to take the dirty towels. All of these concerns were brought up to the front desk, they told us they were unable to do anything because they weren't the manager. Upon check-out (Monday morning), I asked for the manager to call me regarding these issues. I called twice on Monday looking for the manager, but she was unavailable. On Tuesday, the manager had still not called. I called back today (Wednesday) and finally was able to speak with the manager. She told me that the best she could do is comp us $70. We had stayed there 3 nights, with issues from day 1. I would not recommend this hotel. I am extremely dissatisfied with their lack of customer service and dirty rooms. Another member of the wedding party had found silverfish in their room. Nothing was done for them either. It was close to the beach, which is the only positive I can say. read more

Solid 4 1/2 stars! Just returned from our yearly trek to the Aptos area. Can't tell you how much we love this place. The remodel turned out great. For what it is (a motor inn) you just can't beat it. Had one little glitch and the staff took care of it promptly and courteously. Customer service here is always top notch. We paid $84 per night for a junior suite w/full kitchen. Hell, I'd move into this place if I could. Includes free parking, free WiFi, nice expanded continental breakfast (which we figured saved us at least $15 per day), close to the beach, great pool/spa/BBQ area and it stays nice and quiet after 10pm. I mean, come on, what more could you want! Contrary to what other reviewers have said, some of the rooms in the bldg. where the breakfast is, you DO have a great view of the ocean off your private balcony. We walked the beach every morning after breakfast for 2 -5 miles. I think I'd weigh less if I did live here :) We always request a portable fan since there's no AC but you rarely need it since it cools down nicely at night. We always keep the "privacy please" sign on our door and it's always respected. Don't forget to tip the employee working in the breakfast area and your housekeepers. They deserve it. Only reason not getting 5 stars is I wish they'd put another TV in the bedroom area of the 2 room suites. Sometimes it's nice to cuddle in bed and watch a movie. But this is a very minor complaint. This place was extremely clean, and the service and employees were very professional and curteous. And the prices beat anything in Capitola or Santa Cruz drastically. They even called to make sure everything was OK. The upstairs rooms have a small balcony, with a table and chairs. The ground floor rooms have sliding glass doors with a small patio, some extremely close to the nice pool/hot tub and BBQ area. The staff told me that they supply the utensils, and coals, and possible the BBQ? Call ahead to verify... I had a room with a Temperpedic King bed, and that was very nice. If you're going with kids, as mentioned previously, get a lower level room near the pool. There were many families BBQ'ing and enjoying themselves around the pool area, which just a very short distance from their patios. I highly recommend this place. Interesting hotel on the beach! Not a bad hotel for an older beach-side location. It is a quick walk to the beach and the cement boat in the national park. The room was nicely appointed, but small. The furnishing were older. The towels, bedding and kitchen supplies were lower end products Nd not what you would find in the major hotel brands. The continental breakfast was a surprise, however did not offer a variety of options outside pastries and waffles; there were hard boiled eggs for protein. All in all, I would return, however the $140 per night was a little steep for this hotel. I will look for a better value. read more

This is a great motel! It's not super fancy, but it's clean and comfy. The walls are pretty thin, but we really enjoyed the small kitchen and balcony overlooking the pool. They have a fantastic pool and hot tub and the BEST part is that they are just steps from Rio Del Mar beach (where you can have bonfires) and Pixie Deli (yum)! The continental breakfast is nothing special, but it's nice that they also have a make-your-own waffle station. read more

This hotel is literally 100 paces from beach and that is what you are probably paying for. The pool/ spa was nice. The rooms were horrible and so was the service. There is NO A/C and the rooms have dirty carpet, thin walls, noisy outside, picture tube tv's. Yes picture tube, I didn't even know these existed anymore. Shower is tight. Bottom line is if your not looking for a relaxing weekend get away and just need a place to crash that's walking distance to the beach then these overpriced rooms are for you. I gave 3 stars because of closeness to beach otherwise would be 2 stars or less. Never going back. We stayed in room 108 for 2 nights. Very spacious and super clean. The only down side was that the people in the adjoining room were really loud late into the night on the first night. They were gone the second night and slept much better. Breakfast was more than I expected. Very clean breakfast area and the lady was very nice. read more

While I would have loved our stay here more as the location is great, our room was clean and it fit our budget, the walls are incredibly thin. Four calls to the front desk asking for our neighbors to turn the music down while also hearing at top volume their afternoon sexcapades did not sit well with a mom traveling alone with her young child. Management and staff were apologetic but no attempts were made to improve our stay other than letting us know they'd ask the neighbors to keep it down. The only other complaint is that while the pool was heated, it was not very clean and we found large amounts of hair floating in the water along with a layer of oil (sunscreen? lotion?) along the top. read more

Stayed here while we were down fir our sons football game vs. Aptos. Reserved off referral from cousin. Wasn't sure from outside pictures but when we got there, very happy. It is older but clean and beds are comfortable. Bathroom is outdated, you know when tissue box is in wall, but clean and showers worked. LOVE the breakfast area. Always stocked up and big. Has fireplace too. Food is normal waffles, different breads, (good toasters) juices, a couple of cereals, oatmeal, yougarts, fruit and boiled eggs. Really good coffee. Great hot tub and pool area with area you can BBQ. Great location to beach and a couple of restaurants. Near by deli is good also. Within walking Staff was very nice. We will be back. read more

My family has stayed at this motel for over 10 years at various times of the year. This was the last time! The staff was rude and unprofessional. The room was not clean, the bath tub did not drain, they forgot to add the bathroom items like toilet paper, shampoo and soap and they did not refill the coffee area, in fact it looked like someone just made the beds and didn't even check the entire room. The pool and hot tub needed to be cleaned and they only stayed open until 9pm, most other motels are open until at least 10 or midnight. There were no towels at the pool either, you have to check them out and the ones they give you are small, thin and old. We decided not to even deal with the hot tub. Disappointing. We rented a suite for the 7 of us and you only get one parking spot, The parking spots are not marked so you have to park far from your actual room. There is limited parking on the street, so parking is a big problem. Overall, we won't be staying here again. I would look around for a motel with better ratings. read more

We recently had a really fun stay here. This is not a fancy place, but the location is great; a short walk to the beach. We had a Stove Suite that had a full kitchen and accomodated 3 people. The expanded complementary continental breakfast was nice. I thought the price was very reasonable for the busiest time of year. I am holding back one star because I wish they allowed dogs! The beach was full of dogs and seeing them made me miss my little one back home. read more

As the real estate folks say, "Location, Location, Location" This is a modest, clean, friendly beach motel less than 2 blocks from the Aptos beach. Because they are remodeling their exterior there is construction noise from 8 AM - 5 PM Monday through Friday but they are VERY upfront about this on their website and offer a special discount during the construction. I found the desk clerk very helpful even when I couldn't figure out how to find parking! The front desk was responsive with special requests. The continental breakfast had more than you might expect: hard boiled eggs and mini waffle irons where you made your own waffles and got to eat them fresh! Fruit was provided for the cereal and made a nice waffle-topping. Hot tub and pool seemed well-maintained. Pool could have been warmer. Good spot for a mini-get-away. read more

We stayed here 6/17/18. The hotel is cute and talk about LOCATION, It's one block from Rio Del Mar beach! The room itself was roomy and most important was clean. It had a retro kitchen which we didn't use but will be convenient for next time we stay longer! The continental breakfast is good. They had hard boiled eggs, make your own waffles or pancakes (regular or blueberry), so many things to toast..english muffins, white, wheat, sourdough, raisin and rye as well as bagels. There were several cereals, coffee, tea and juice too! The staff was very nice and welcoming as well. We will return! read more

Rio Sands is in the Barfield Hotel Group. They have some well run lodgings on the Central Coast. In the Santa Cruz area the Capitola Venetian and the Aptos Rio Sands are part of the group. I've stay at the Rio Sands for decades and some of their other properties. I've never had as tired and bare room as they provided last night. For our long standing patrons: bupkis. Room 144 is not in the main building, it's in the inferior Sands Building. The unlocked one with filthy carpets and a breakfast room. Room 144 provided a small table with small wooden chairs. There is no comfortable place to sit. Small bathroom with a modular plastic shower a normal sized adult can barely turn around in. I've been in cryotherapy chambers that were bigger. I complained to the two young clerks. Later they were in my building and I showed them the stark, simple room. They replied we will remodel rooms here soon. Not soon enough for me. I would never stay in that room again. May not stay at Rio Sands or Barfield Group. You'd think they'd appreciate return customers. Oh, I did get a reduced rate of $99 for the spartan room. read more

I don't know how people can complain about this place. Is it shiny and new looking like a 4 star hotel in New York? No, of course not. But despite a few minor things like lack of air conditioning (we were plenty comfortable with windows cracked in late June), our stay here was very very enjoyable. You just can't beat the location... We have stayed here every summer since 2012 except for last summer when we rented a condo at La Selva Beach. The kids thought the condo was "okay" but really wanted to go back to the Rio Sands! Rio Sands Hotel is a great location and probably best in cooler months because there is absolutely NO A/C!!! The rooms need serious updating. The carpet was filthy throughout the property and extremely worn out. Due to the lack of air circulation upon check in the bathroom window and back patio door was open, leaving absolutely no privacy nor security. The front door popped open with a strong gust of wind we had even though it was closed tightly. I didn't have the latch on at the time because my husband was going to be coming back to room shortly. I will say that the property is landscaped nicely and the pool they say is heated. The bedding seems to be respectable for the this property based on what else I have seen. However, the walls are so thin you can hear conversations next door and the child bouncing off the walls and running around as if her or she were above us. I don't think this is a place I recommend for a relaxing vacation or business trip. If you are looking for a respectable place near the ocean and don't care about anything else then this may be your place. Otherwise this place needs to do some updates to compete with the other competitors in the area. Happy vacationing in the city we love. read more

the ONLY and I mean ONLY good thing about this place is the location! the hotel is so old and in repair that they need to tear it down and start over. not to mention how unprofessional and unfriendly the staff is, there is only one house keeper that is cordial. my first night I was kept up most of the night from the family staying next door because of the paper thin walls AND the family above me because the floors are so thin and hardwood upstairs too. it sounded like they were all in my room! it was awful. then the second night I came back from dinner to find the maintenance man (not a professional plumber) snaking the sewer lines because it had backed up. but not only had it backed up, it backed up and soiled all the carpet in front of my room and a few other rooms. then when I walked into my room I discovered that it had backed up in my shower and toilet, making my bathroom unusable for about 12 hours! then the next night the same thing happened!! raw sewage in my shower all night 2 nights in a row and the staff was completely unapologetic about it! all of this was a total health hazard on top of the inconvenience. I would never spend money staying at this rat trap ever again. I would spend twice the money to rent a house in the area, it would be worth it after the horrible experience I had here. read more

We had stayed at Rio Sands Hotel 5 years ago and had a good experience then but our recent stay August 27th to the 30th was pretty bad because the management seemed uninterested in ensuring the safety and well-being of guests. There were two separate major incidents! On Saturday August 28th there was a large party below us with over 20 people smoking and drinking and not wearing masks. They were swearing loudly and making a ton of noise. There were all in their mid-20's. We had to keep our sliding glass door closed because of all of the smoke rising up to our unit and because of the noise. It went on for many hours. The hotel has a really nice smoking area where people can smoke away from the building but none of the people at the party used it. But, the worst part was on Sunday the 29th. At around 10pm a couple in the room next to us started fighting very loudly, swearing, throwing things, slamming doors. It was so loud we could hear the woman screaming at the man for cheating on her with other women when she was in prison. At one point he threatened to kill her. When you called the front desk there were no staff on duty and they said that their emergency line for the hotel is not answered during the overnight hours but that guests can leave a message in case they get a chance to check the machine (that is literally what the message said!) and then the message machine said "this voicemail box is full and cannot accept any new messages." At around that time two police officers started banging on the door of the room next door where the couple were fighting. The man came out and explained that he and his girlfriend are both homeless and that she is addicted to drugs, that she recently got out of prison and that they just wanted one night in the hotel to get off the streets to shower and rest. He said she was fighting with him and that it was her fault. The police said they had to adhere to the quiet hours and that the hotel management would probably be asking them to leave, but that it was completely up to the discretion of the hotel staff. They said he should go down to the office to talk to the hotel staff. It seemed like they were told they could remain because he came back to the room and it was quiet for an hour. And then they started fighting again at the top of their lungs and slamming doors and throwing things. Eventually she opened the door and started screaming profanities at him and then stormed off down the hallway, down the stairs, and you could still her screaming all the way down the block as she disappeared. She barely had any clothes on especially considering the cold foggy weather. Eventually things were quiet and we fell to sleep. The whole thing should have been handled differently. I feel really bad for people struggling with drug addiction and homelessness but we were very frightened that he might have a gun and shoot it even unintentionally threw the wall connecting our rooms. It definitely seemed that the hotel staff should have had the police escort them out of the hotel based on the death threats and how dangerous the situation seemed to be. The third thing that was bad is there was an awesome breakfast every morning that you could make yourself, but on one of the days it was closed when it was supposed to be open at that time and there was no explanation whatsoever. The fourth problem was that the wooden bed frame was extremely loud and creaky to the point where if you moved onto your side it was likely you or your partner would wake up completely. It wasn't particularly comfortable of a mattress especially for the high cost of the room, but it was the loudness of the bed that was the problem. Also, we rented a suite with a kitchenette and it wasn't very clean. The salt shaker was covered in dried egg yoke and some things were greasy, not clean. The towel rack had also been poorly patched up previously and was hanging partially out of the wall and then fell almost completely out of the wall during our stay. Just from hanging the same towels on it. Having said all of this there are a LOT of things we do like about the hotel, the staff are really nice, we think it is really beautiful, has a great location, the breakfast is really good, we really like the decor in the common areas and the room, the suite we had was great, and especially the balcony. I hate to have had such a bad experience there because I had such a good experience five years ago. But because management seemed to have an "anything goes attitude" and didn't enforce their guest policies we are unlikely to ever return. It was very stressful that they don't reign in the guests and ensure the safety of their guests. We were on this weekend trip visiting one of my best friends who is battling stage 4 cancer and who lives just a few minutes drive from the hotel and it was a really disappointing stay. I will probably write separately to the managers but wanted to share this on Yelp so others know of these serious concerns. read more

.We were serviced wet towels. .My husband had to return his moldy pillow .We reported room had previous guest trash under sofa bed bed and wasn't mopped prior to our arrival lots of dust bunnies under furniture. .Marketing department hasn't updated breakfast being cancelled from covid so you don't get a breakfast. .We reported ants and they came and sprayed our room without letting us know ruining our food on counters and toothbrushes the smell was so overwhelming we had to be gone from our room for over 3 hours and Maggie said it was fair to take $20 bucks. How rude is that? $20 dollars made no sense. Very wrong and inconsistent customer service. They tried to say the aunt spray they sprayed was just grapefruit spray and is organic but we all know bug spray smell and that was not grapefruit. They tried their best to be polite about it but they just don't have experience in customer service and cleanliness at the moment which is too bad because we have used this place in the past. It's a great location walking distance to beach. No hand sanitizer near pool or vending machine they're not practicing covid friendly precautions non of the maids were wearing masks but they were super strict saying I had to have a mask on while coming in the lobby. read more

We have been coming to the Rio Sands for many years - my kids have, in part, grown-up playing poolside and meeting other kids along the way to share hot dogs and beach stories with. The pool and hot-tub and surrounding area are well kept, there is a lawn and BBQ area that are lovely, the breakfast is kid heaven - we happily celebrate both my daughters' birthdays here - year after year. The staff (I am talking about you again, Cole) are all amazing and accommodating - truly they go above and personify true customer service - courteous, helpful, smart, great senses of humor - true professionals. I travel a fare amount- so its a rare pleasure to encounter stand out customer service like that found at the Rio Sands. The upgrades in the past few years (refinished rooms, super comfie patio furniture, landscaping, etc) just put a sheen on already shining gem of a vacation destination. And... location... location... location - great beach access replete with the requisite amazing sunsets, black porpoises, and occasional shark or whale sighting. I actually thought twice about writing a review- but only for the purely selfish reason that I want to make sure we can always get a room :) read more

*THIS PLACE WILL TRY CHARGING YOUR CARD MULTIPLE TIMES* When we first checked into this hotel we were very excited. It seemed like a great place and Andre who was checking us in was very nice. The room was clean and the pool was very refreshing. We enjoyed the first evening so we decided to stay another night. That is where enjoying our stay ended. We got a call to our room saying there was a noise complaint at ten. We didn't even get back to our room until after ten thirty. We even said bless you to the employee working when he sneezed as we were going up to our room! He claimed he didn't hear us and would ask us to leave next time because they have a strict one compliant policy. Since the noise wasn't us in the first place we didn't have any more problems that night. I got a text message from my bank saying they thought there was fraud and it listed five charges on the same day. When I called my bank it turns out those five were tried at least four times each!!!! When I called to look into it Andre denied doing that, said it was only once, said that he couldn't talk to my bank, and that there was no employee above him. I called back my bank and called the sands. The bank rep tried to explain my card was already charged and they needed to use that same code again because it was pending and not try to charge it again and he was even rude to her! It finally got to the point where the agreement was the amount that would be charged. I wake up today and he reversed that AGAIN and is trying to charge me $40 than he is suppose to. When I call for a manager Andre told she wasn't in At the moment but when I asked when she will return I got told there is no one until the middle of next week. This is the worst customer service. It's a shame what seemed like a great hotel that we would recommend to everyone turned out to be somewhere we need to warn people about. If you don't want to spend days on the phone with your bank trying to deal with charges that should have never been made I suggest you find somewhere else to stay. read more

I was disappointed! : ( My expectation for what I paid for and the room I stayed in was a lot different from what people yelped about. First of all, it's a motel not a hotel. The bathroom was extremely small. Don't look on the bathroom counter for your shampoo, conditioner and body soap because there is NO bathroom counter. You will find your items attached to the wall in the shower. Our room did have 2 rooms...bunk bed and pull out sofa in one and queen size bed in the other. Small kitchenette was located about 2 feet from the bed. So be prepared that you will be in TIGHT quarters. At night we could hear the conversations of the people in the room next to us, the cars and people in the parking lot and the refrigerator humming all night long. I swear, I could hear the snoring of the guy next door too! Our room was on the bottom floor, so in the morning we were awaken by the voices of the people next to us and the foot steps and voices of the people above us. For the price I paid I was not impressed at all! I will not be back! read more

My family and I have been coming to the Rio Sands for years. The location can't be beat with steps to the beach and places to eat. It however is not Fido friendly so we stopped staying there since adopting a dog. Travelers suggestions, the kitchen suites are not stocked - bring your own basics. The hotel charges $50 for a "kitchen pack" but it's worthless. Bring your own disposable stuff. Second, bring your own pool towels, the ones they provide are the size of hand towels. The staff is friendly, and quickly responsive. The rooms are clean with several having been updated. The beds are comfortable. The family suites are tight but still enough room for 5-6. Best rooms in my opinion are the ones located on the ground floor near the pool because of the location and open patio. The continental breakfast is decent, the pool area is clean. Over all it's a decent hotel. It's not a 5-star resort, but meets the basic needs of a clean place to stay while enjoying Aptos. read more

We have been going to this hotel on our anniversary for five out of the past eight years. We stayed there this past Monday and Tuesday for our eighth anniversary. On Monday night my wife noticed a cockroach in our room. Tuesday morning we promptly reported our concerns to the front desk in person. We were moved from our ocean view room to a smaller, street level room without any view. Over the span of the next 24 hours I asked three times to have a manager or supervisor speak with me...to no avail! Upon checking out I asked if there would be any resolution for our concerns. Once again I was told "sorry" We will never return to the Rio Sands Hotel due to their lack of concern for their paying customers. I also told the front desk personnel that I would be reporting our disappointing experience to Yelp and I was met with apathy. So sad. Please don't patronize this hotel as they do not care about the health and safety of their clients. read more

WORST HOTEL EVER!!!! Never seen so much stuff crammed into one room (bunk beds, sofa bed, kitchen etc in a 500 sq ft room) - and it was a so-called "suite"! No AC or Heat - they actually pass out fans at the front desk. We saw a skunk on the back patio which was appropriate because it represented the hotel - stinks!! Here's the kicker: We asked for a late check out (just 30 minutes extra) and Andre (one of the hotel "patrons" at the front desk) told my wife that he was going to call the Sheriff's dept if we didn't vacate the room. I've never heard such a thing ever and we've stayed at 100 hotels over the past 20 years. Nice way to treat your guests. What a joke! CUSTOMER SERVICE SUCKS there! Don't let the beach access fool you. We will never stay there again and I recommend you think twice before staying there as well!! read more

They have temperpedic beds that are SOOO comfortable. The rooms were very clean and the front desk staff was incredibly helpful. We had a "mini" crisis and needed to have documents scanned and emailed. They were able to find someone local and really made the task less stressful and easy. It is a short walk to the beach and the Cafe Rio is a fun place for happy hour and dinner as well. One star is too much. It appears to be a cool old motel near the beach, that's it. This place sucks, it's expensive and the staff is not trained in hotel management. They know how to book your room and take your money. I was on the bottom floor and the room above me was having some sort of party. Lots of stomping around and loud talking. At 10 o'clock at night it was no big deal. I was able to fall asleep. When it was still going on at 2 o'clock in the morning and even louder, that was a problem. I went to the front desk to complain and the night desk man was less than smart. He really didn't care that I was up there at 2 in the morning complaining which leads me to think this is normal. He called the room above mine and asked them to keep it down because they got a complaint. How about stop now or you will get kicked out! I went back to my room and it got louder. I'm sure that was on purpose. I went back to the front desk and the idiot working there told me he stood outside their door and it wasn't that loud. It was now almost 2:30 and it shouldn't be loud at all. I told him if he wouldn't tell them to stop that I would and he threatened to call the sheriff and have me arrested. I told him to do it. This place SUCKS. I will never come back. I hope those of you reading this believe me and stay away. There are plenty of houses to rent right around here for just a little more money. read more
