They have a fairly big space with a big selection of pop and rock vinyls! The prices either matched online or were somewhat cheaper, so you definitely get your money's worth. I always look for a LatinAmerican section, and they did have one, but it wasn't as good as other record stores I have been to. The service was definitely excellent! The manager, or at least who I think was the manager, was very attentive and helped us get a turntable we were pondering about buying or not, and he was great answering questions about it. The decor is a plus! So fun and so many "old" posters and references. Definitely stop by if given the chance!

It's a great store, with a very nice longtime owner, a helpful and friendly staff, and it has a relaxed atmosphere. MSJ is in a good neighborhood for lunch. They avoid all the mistakes that many other record stores make. I am speaking, of course of snotty, snobby, easily triggered owners/salespeople, or racks of lps too jammed or unpriced "bring to the counter for price"albums, etc. The records here are priced clearly and fairly, in my opinion*. *If you haven't shopped for records in recent years.. the demand for records has gone up drastically in recent years, and prices have gone up accordingly everywhere. You will not find 2008 (or 1974) prices on records in 2025. Especially on original pressings of the big classic rock albums by the top bands still played on the radio. I feel these guys are pretty fair, especially if you compare shopping at a store vs. shopping online, where you have to pay extra for shipping and really have nothing more than a vague hope that the LP will arrive in the stated condition. That aside. and back to the review... The more expensive items have sealed flaps, but you can open and inspect the vinyl at the counter. Less expensive records can be inspected at the rack if you do so carefully (i.e., not accidentally flinging the record across the store or getting yer greasy fingerprints 'em). Note: Record swapping will get you banned, you delinquents ;) - so don't be that person. Also, drinks are a no-no for understandable reasons. MSJ has tons of great vinyl in vg'+ or better condish. Rock is broken down alphabetically in various sections by price: $10 and up, $5, etc. There are boxes underneath these lp racks, but they request you get an employees help to access them. I never have time to crate dig, but I aspire to one day. I pick up a lot of records each visit, with very few exceptions (over 30 yrs) the albums and cds I've purchased have always been in VG+ or better, clean, etc. I have often traded in albums for store credit, and they are reasonable if you bring in decent records in nice condition that are not super common. I can't speak to how well they cover other genres since I mostly concentrate on rock - but there's a good amount of other stuff to peruse. If you go, I hope you find that gem you are looking for!

Can I share a story with you?  During the Dark Ages (pre-internet, no Yelp or smartphones) learning about something a bit off-the-beaten-path, let alone being able to source it, was an arduous task. I was an English Lit major and one of my professors loved to talk about even more books than the ones already assigned to his class and he always mentioned 'The Three Christs of Ypsilanti' that he read himself when he was in college.  It sounded more interesting than what we were reading in class (sorry, but there's only so many times you can endure 'Oedipus Rex') and I went hunting for 'Three Christs' but never had any luck.  Most workers at other shops gave the quizzical "What'cha talkin 'bout Willis?!" look and I'd leave empty-handed (or with a completely different book... just because).  Then I found myself here.  And while casually strolling through the store and eyeing up all the titles... I found a used copy!  (Can I tell you one other thing?  The book was a bit dry and dated and part of me wished it stayed like the Holy Grail - that it might keep me searching through different bookstores but never actually finding it.) And it's been more than a few years (okay, decades!) since I scored 'Three Christs' and now I'm here once again - this time doing my part to properly celebrate and support "Independent Bookstore Day" - and man oh man... you could lose an entire day here just drifting from rack to rack, aisle to aisle, floor to floor. Whatever you fancy - they have a section for it. Pricing is a-okay. The quality of the 'newer' used books is most excellent.  (The older, more rare and worn copies are out of reach or behind glass cases.) Behind the counter is the coolest and friendliest gal. From music to books to merch to a "gumball machine" that has poems (of course, right?) - the world is a better place with mom and pop (book)stores like this in it. "Since 1984" - and hoping they'll be going strong for another 40-plus years... (PS: if you stumble upon the movie version of 'Three Christs' - skip that as well.  They tried to make it a comedy and it's awful.)

From the…read moresidewalk shelves of $1 books to the stairs painted as recognizable book spines, this forty-year old store is a haven for story lovers. Some bookstores are big and cluttered, leaving visitors to fend for themselves if they're looking for something specific. Not here. Within the cavernous space, there's a clear sense of organization - by genre and neat alphabetization by author's name. The selection is vast; from literary artwork, coffee table books, local geography, and manga, there's truly something for everyone. I especially loved the well-stocked children's section in the back, where I was endeared by the sight of a young bookworm sitting with her head in a book for a while without any one bothering her. That, more than anything else, is why I love local bookshops - they're homespun spaces where people can curate their love for books. Speaking of homespun, this bookstore isn't fancy. The shelves look like they're made of unvarnished plywood that have been hammered together, and most of the store signs have been made with little more than marker and posterboard. Don't let that fool you - the workers here know their stuff. I overheard enough conversations to know they can talk books with anyone who walks in and can help you locate most anything in the store. If you're in the area and need a space to just breathe in the smell of books old and new, please do yourself a favor and stop in.

I later found out there was a documentary about the store so I watched that and now I'm even more glad I stopped in. Seems like the store isn't doing great at the moment. The prices seemed high for playable records, I saw nothing under $20. All too many of the covers were badly worn or the records scratched, for these prices I think an album should be pretty outside & unscratched inside. Not everything is overpriced, there's also an enormous section of $1 albums, completely unsorted. The center rack is sorted by artist with sections for rock/pop, jazz and hard rock. But it's tough to get to that rack, all aisles are hopelessly cluttered with boxes of unsorted vinyl, packed so full that you cannot get past other people, stacked so tightly that you cannot reach the racks to flip thru, it's just unpleasant. If you're patient you may indeed find something you'll treasure. I bought a playable, non-collectible pressing of a 1985 rock album for $20, that was about the same as the fleabay price but here it was instant gratification and support of a local business. I was surprised this music business couldn't bother to play interesting tunes on a decent sound system, here it's just staticky radio through cheap speakers, meh.

I'd been in some time ago but don't remember the selection this good. Nice mix of new and well-priced used. Example, I paid under $10 for a Promo copy of Elvis Costello Blood and Chocolate in very nice, VG+/E condition. Good Jazz selections as well. They also had a nice selection of bootlegs which you don't see very often. They sell books and clothing which for me usually means it's not a serious store, but Main Steet Beat is the exception. Great staff well laid out and popular, the store has a nice vibe plus Nyack is a fun town to visit with great restaurants and a rich history.
