Pretty cool store. I came across it by accident and I'm glad I did. It's pretty overwhelming at first. Tons of stuff everywhere. Not easy to search through or get around but it's all about the dig. Pretty well organized as far as genre. I knocked a few things off my want list. Prices were pretty reasonable for the most part. I later found out there was a documentary about the store so I watched that and now I'm even more glad I stopped in. Seems like the store isn't doing great at the moment. I would hate to see it close so I will be making this a regular stop. If you're an old school collector, you'll enjoy it. read more

I absolutely love this place! A bit overwhelming with how many records this owner has but if you just ask him if he has it, he can tell you if he's seen it, I spent over an hour in here and I don't even think I made it through 1/100th of his selection, older vinyls are always likely to sound better on a record player, and I found some gems (I found harvest by Neil young) and it was only being sold for 5$. Great quality and great prices. The man who owns this place is a sweet heart and he owns almost any album you can think of. Definitely stop in and take a look. read more

You'll need the right attitude for Flipside. The variety is immense (5 stars) which is why I'm going back. But it feels like a hoarder's basement! The prices seemed high for playable records, I saw nothing under $20. All too many of the covers were badly worn or the records scratched, for these prices I think an album should be pretty outside & unscratched inside. Not everything is overpriced, there's also an enormous section of $1 albums, completely unsorted. The center rack is sorted by artist with sections for rock/pop, jazz and hard rock. But it's tough to get to that rack, all aisles are hopelessly cluttered with boxes of unsorted vinyl, packed so full that you cannot get past other people, stacked so tightly that you cannot reach the racks to flip thru, it's just unpleasant. If you're patient you may indeed find something you'll treasure. I bought a playable, non-collectible pressing of a 1985 rock album for $20, that was about the same as the fleabay price but here it was instant gratification and support of a local business. I was surprised this music business couldn't bother to play interesting tunes on a decent sound system, here it's just staticky radio through cheap speakers, meh. read more

Yes, the carpet in this record store has seen better days, and you might find an empty can of 'Ozzy' beer denoting the Black Sabbath records in the metal section. However, it's also the best record store in all of northern New Jersey. Records of all genres are alphabetically filed in bins everywhere. Pricing is usually quite reasonable and the owner is a genuinely GOOD dude who has been running this 50+ year old record store for over 30 years! If you love music and crave vinyl, you'll always find something to buy in this place. Punk, Oldies, Metal, Jazz, Rock, Showtunes, etc.......I've found some true gems over the years! read more

I'm in agreement with a reviewer who wrote something just days ago. Sorry, I cannot get behind this store and will not be stopping there ever again. It has been years since I have been there and it has gotten even more cramped and dismal (visited on 2/20/15) I can cite some of the same reasons this previous reviewer did, most notably the uncomfortable, cramped conditions which make it extremely difficult to search through inventory effectively. For this reason, I have also stopped shopping at Sound Exchange which is located nearby in Wayne...both stores need to take close note of this and realize that if customers can't look through your over-packed bins or even pass each other in the cramped narrow aisles, you need to make adjustments. After all, you are serving OUR needs, right? I'm willing to pay more for new releases (and did last week) to support independent record stores - but not when the experience is sullied to the point of not wanting to shop there at all because you can't find what you are looking for or even browse casually. read more

Growing up in Huntington, Long Island, I was lucky to have a used record store close by called Titus Oakes. Great store. No longer in business. Flip Side Records is the next best thing to that store in Huntington where I spent many hours of my misspent youth. Awesome collection of Classic Rock LPs and other genres. Let's face it, Classic Rock from the 60s, 70s and beyond is best heard on vinyl. A real nostalgic trip back in time and a great place to buy that long lost LP that got trashed at your keg party back in the day! Recommended. read more

Was visiting out of town and had some down time, so I went on a mission to find some record shops. This spot was cool; small & cramped, really had to dig (that's half the fun), & he had some great stuff. A bit overpriced and was unwilling to move on prices. Found what I wanted to purchase on discogs for an average $5 less and in better condition, but picked up two records despite that, and found it really strange that upon checkout he took the plastic sleeves (wtf? That was a first). Worth checking out, but not sure that I'd frequent the place if I were to live in the area. read more

I love this place! The guy who owns it (I think his name is Dan) is super sweet and knows a lot about music. He knows EVERYTHING! He has a lot of good records from new to old. Anything from the Revillos to the Crystals, he probably has it, just ask! He also has a lot of great cds and tapes. I never leave without buying something. read more

Flipside is the real deal. It should stay open forever. There's a little bit of everything, and a whole lot more. What an experience! Anyone who loves music should visit this place - and buy something. Yes, it's a little cramped and the records are jammed in there pretty tight, but after all it's all about the music. You can almost call the place a museum to music! Best of all, the owner's taste in music is as good as mine. Make a day of it - the Mexican place next door is pretty good too. I was visiting my buddy in Jersey and waited a long time to see Flipside. There's nothing like this in Los Angeles anymore - probably nothing like it anywhere. read more

Great old-school record shop that's been holding its own on the main drag of Pompton Lakes since before I was born. Packed full of records, cds, tapes and misc memorabilia, lots of unsorted crates on the floor. The owner was nice enough to help me replace the drive belt on my old turntable, I brought the platter in and he figured out which size I needed. Even showed me how to install it! Thanks! read more

If you're looking for anything vinyl related this is your place. Racks and racks of vinyl, used and new CD's even 8-Tracks and cassettes. Excellent record shop. I've found quite a good number of records while shopping here, and always find something interesting every time I go. If the record is cheap, it usually means it just needs to get cleaned and plays perfectly after that (that's just my experience - I can't speak for every record). Waste of time. Everything is jammed into shelves and causing warping. All used records I saw were between $25-30 dollars. Many of which I pulled out had severe scratching and dirt. Everything that's new and sealed is $5-10 more than amazon pricing. It's almost as if the owner doesn't want to make sales. This was a first and last. read more

My daughter shops here as often as she can score a ride (she's just turning 16). She loves it there - unique selection including vinyl and the prices are very fair. As "The Dad" I've dealt with the owner ("Dan") by telephone and he's a solid guy with an old-school approach. Best thing - Dan gives his "regulars" a little extra attention and, when possible, a better shot at getting something that's in demand. If there's a better example of a small-town merchant fighting the good fight against the corporate behemoth that keeps a massive catalog of "Standard Operating Procedures" instead of a massive catalog (in their heads, mind you) of music knowledge, I challenge you to name them. If you have a deep abiding love for "RECORDS" (and even CD's) over today's soulless MP3, or other formats where a groove is transformed into 1's and 0's, then Flipside II / Records & Tapes in Pompton Lakes, deserves your hard-earned loyalty and dollars.
