This is a wonderful drive thru/ walk up custard stand we love to visit after school on hot days! We visited recently last week on a very slow day for the business (unusual) and drove thru the drive thru. The young lady who helped us was very friendly with a nice smile. She let us know the flavors available and suggested her own personal favorite which was nice to hear! My daughters always get a single or double in a cup. This time it was chocolate all around! Everyone was extremely happy with the rich delicious chocolate taste of Ritters custard. It was so smooth and creamy tasting. I pulled into the parking lot with 5 kids in my car and waited in a long line of cars, (for over 15 minutes.) got all my kids' orders and when we got to the window, the guy said they're closed because I pulled in after a certain time. when I told him we HAD BEEN in line, he basically just said too bad. (calling me a liar) he wouldn't give me a manager, corporate number or even his name.. I came to Ritters and waited on the drive through for three cars to go in front of me. When I got to the window the associate said "Hi we're closed." I told the associate "ive waited in line for 10 minutes for multiple cars to pass can you please serve me." He said "no" I said let me talk to the manager. The associate says "I'm the manager." I asked for his name and he said "I can't give you my name." So to the "no name" manager that doesn't care about customer service you EARNED this 1 star review! If you are closed you shouldn't have served the first three cars in front of me and then denied service. Very poor experience and even WORSE customer service. read more

Amazing people, amazing flavors, amazing service, local favorite, and all the options you could want. no complaints at all from me. PERFECT! This place is that. 5 flavors per day with a rotating schedule is so cool. I've never had frozen custard before, and the creamy texture was amazing. My flavors were chocolate, chocolate almond, birthday cake, vanilla, and strawberry. When you combine those it's crazy how good it was. Usually they do 3 scoops in a GIANT container (sorry I didn't show the size...I was too busy eating), but I wanted to try all 5 flavors, so they did a half scoop of everything, and 1 whole scoop to make up for it. When you have a staff that serves you above and beyond, and a menu that is amazing, plus the flavors and creamy texture to separate yourself from just any old ice cream, it's impossible to complain about what I experienced here. We got the cake batter glacier and the strawberry glacier. It tastes really good. The strawberry wasn't only strawberry flavored but had strawberries in them. The cake batter was tasted just like cake batter. When left alone for like two minutes, you can see the mixtures separate. I don't know what it was that separated. It's just really sweet so get a small. The one thing I didn't like was that we got the glaciers melted. It almost felt like I was eating sweet soup. Love this place! The staff was incredibly sweet and helpful. The line was long but it moved pretty quickly. I got a banana split and was able to choose three custard flavors. They have daily specialty flavors and some standard flavors. Their pecan is bro b-ball the best, so creamy and smooth. I also got chocolate dipped banana which had chocolate pieces, and classic vanilla. My topics were classic fudge, pineapple, and strawberry with whipped cream, nuts, and cherry. Very nice soft-serve kind of frozen custard/ice cream place out in Mishawaka, Indiana...very near the campus of the University of Notre Dame. This is one of a number of franchise locations for this brand - they have about eight in Indiana alone. You also can buy gift cards here, and sign up for their version of a Loyalty Program. At this particular location they offer all the usuals, and do so in a nice clean walk-up/drive-thru store...nice big facility and parking lot can take in lots of people. Open all year round. Their frozen custard is very nice and creamy. The operation also seems to do a big business in waffle cones and bowls...very nice and freshly made...adds to the ice cream buzz. The service is always friendly and efficient, though the lines can get long since there's usually only 2-3 folks working the stand. They have the best frozen custard in the area, along with tasty diary-free options for your lactose intolerant friends. My go-to order is the Worms'n'Dirt, and yes, it's off the kids menu, but it's the perfect size and hits the spot every time! Also note: there's a standing Groupon for $3 which gives you a $6 credit. There is dangerous, and then there is Ritter's frozen custard. Do not, do not, do not look up the grams of saturated fat in your delicious styrofoam cup of pure freaking goodness. Do not worry about the milk, the sugar, the content of the Oreos, the line, the cars wrapping around the drive-through. This place is it. The "custard" or ice cream here is so good I would throw DQ or Cold Stone behind-my-back over my shoulder and lunge and jump like Ian McKellen in The Da Vinci Code for two, perhaps even one scoop of this white-and-black massage (insert other innuendo here) in the the mouth that I get and you should get too known as the Oreo Glacier. (Yes, if you too go here, I know the glacier is served by the size and not by the scoop!) Now--to the scoops! These things are--prepare yourself--these things are like $1.50 per scoop for the flavors of the day. THERE ARE THREE FLAVORS EVERY DAY. THREE. They are like $1.50 a scoop. *Do you know how insane this is?* I submit there is no better value for your money in pure pleasure sheer delight oh my god spoon already digging can you believe the cost (?) SO MUCH BETTER THAN (eject sad memories of other attempts at "ice cream" from your mind!!) it is pure gold. Ritters is like--if my body could eat whatever it wanted and was always hungry without getting big and round--this is where you would find me. Three flavors a day. (I shake my head.) Free samples (ask). If you are a Ritter's snob and want access to all three flavors at once (and don't want two buried under the top flavor in your styrofoam cup) ask them to put the three scoops (who seriously gets less than 3 scoops?) in a "banana boat" container, served horizontally. In this case, have some napkins handy, because your hands *will get cold* without the banana there lining the bottom. (Protip for Ritter's: manufacture styrofoam banana boat shaped containers and serve multiple scoops thus, to insulate the hands--the only legitimate criticism of this great institution!!!) However, because of it being an off season, there was only one worker and it was a little slow. They were also out if chocolate to dip the waffle cone. When you live in the Midwest, summers can be oppressively hot and humid. This is especially true in cities like South Bend, in which most older buildings don't have air conditioning. When the temperature starts to rise and the air gets thicker, all you want to do is take off your clothes and eat ice cream. The former wasn't (and isn't) an option for me--and even if it were, the locals don't take kindly to nudity--so I just usually ate ice cream. Ritter's doesn't sell ice cream, but their custard is like ice cream, or at least it is to me, but then what do I know? Expect a long wait during hot summer nights, especially while local schools are still out. Best. Frozen Custard. Ever. I'm a huge fan of frozen custard, and this really is the best I've tasted. So rich and smooth, perfect texture, and all the flavors they dream up are wonderful! My current obsession is the buttered almond. DELICIOUS! I much prefer custard to soft-serve, and I prefer ice cream/custard stands to restaurants that serve ice cream/custard (I'm looking at you, Dairy Queen). After eating at Ritter's for the first time, all I could say was "Yum!!" The frozen custard is thick and creamy, and fresh made on the premises. The limited selection is a perfect exchange because of the outstanding quality of the custard. I love to get the Vanilla hot fudge sundae with Spanish peanuts, or the Oreo Glacier. The German Chocolate is decadent and perfect for a summer night. I love their outdoor seating area, but if it's a chilly night, be sure to bring a sweater! I come here quite often for custard. I usually love their flavors. Today I ordered a scoop of their featured chocolate covered banana and the flavor combination was not done well. It was very unpleasant. I took one bite and asked if I could get something else. The staff said they would have to charge me for an additional ice cream. Very disappointed because me and my family are frequent customers and it would have been a simple fix for a great experience. Basically I gave them $4 for nothing of value in return. I'm not giving this less than 2 stars because the staff were very friendly and I usually am very happy with their custard. read more
