The wait time is very long so don't be in a hurry. I got the fried pork chop, white beans, corn and cornbread. The fried pork chop wasn't bad but it tasted like it was fried in the same oil as fish cause it had a fishy taste. The rice in the beans was crunchy which is not appealing but the beans were good. Oh man. This place was fabulous. You know it's good when everyone there seems to know one another and they offer you free cake from the birthday party they are hosting. Such hospitality! I had the fried chicken with red beans/rice and it was PHENOMENAL. Especially the red beans/rice, I could LIVE on that. Ordered the Rita Mae Seafood special. Lots of food, very good. Catfish, fried shrimp, gumbo and a huge crab cake. The batter for the shrimp is a flour batter, not cornmeal, and just slightly sweet. Gumbo is a bit thinner today than I usually see, but fantastic flavor. Probably because I got here so early. The crab cake is twice the size of anything back East, and delicious. Price are 1/2 of New Orleans prices, flavor is better and fresh. The decor is down home and reminds me of where I grew up. Overall, lots of great tasting food in a non-pretentious atmosphere. Rita Mae's platter was delicious, it's a fried seafood platter with shrimp, crab patty, fish and small chicken & sausage gumbo. I truly enjoyed it. Kids had cheeseburger which was too big for my 6 yr old. They are big pattys...no kids menu. Bread pudding was good too. It had raisins and pineapple. Oh my...traveling through St. Mary Parish heading back to Baton Rouge and wanted a bite before it got too late...yelped this little Gem....ordered a Combo plate with shrimp and fish for hubby and I...we shared it...big mistake...my hubby was like, "that's all?" All the dressings worked well, but the sausage was really the star: taut skin with a good bite, flavorful and textured inside with just the right amount of spiciness. As for the restaurant itself, it had a very nice local feel, where it seemed most people knew each other. read more

Came to Morgan City for a lil 4 day getaway. Had a craving for some home cooking. Growing up with a Cajun background, I am almost impossible to completely satisfied. Well this place did it. As soon as we walked in we were welcomed with a genuine smile and a warm welcome. Only problem is I am a hardcore Dr. Pepper man and there was none BUT the sweet tea was a more that satisfying substitute. Daily special were prominently displayed on a board. Being as it was Monday, I had the red beans and rice w/breaded pork chop and steamed carrots. I didn't even have a chance to place my napkin in my lap before the food was delivered to our table. DELICIOUS. This place is not that big but you will be thourghly satisfied with everything from the time you enter to the time you are sent away with a very sincere thank you and have a nice day. Went to Rita Mae's when in Morgan City with my brother and his wife doing some family history research. We chose it based on Yelp reviews, and were not disappointed. I was apprehensive about eating here because I have Celiac, and must eat very strictly gluten free. I talked to the waitress and the manager, and they both advised me what to order (and not order!), and assured my meal was prepared safely for me. My brother raved over the gumbo, which he had never tried before. You need to know he's not an adventurous eater, and being from California we had precious little exposure to Southern Louisiana foods. But he was instantly smitten. My sister in law had fried catfish, and loved her meal, too. If I ever find myself in Morgan City again, I would definitely stop by. The ambience is "down home." Nothing remotely fancy. But the welcome and the great service we received were far better than many places we visited on our trip. The best part of all? The travel blessing we received before departing. Started to go eat there but the neighbor at the florist told me I could not park there because that was her parking. The neighbor said I could go park down the block under the over pass. I was not going to make people walk in the bus I was driving. I was really looking forward to eating there. What makes this real crazy is the florist place looked closed because the yard to the right of the building looked like crape- it was where they must of had out door plants at one time. I was quickly greeted by one of the owners, they definitely do it right. Smile on his face and wanting to serve me. I felt very welcome and we were off to a great start. The menus are hand typed, home style. I have been to a lot of places and I have a feeling that this may be the one, the one where I stick my neck out for the other culinary critics to chop it off or be validated to be in the same relm as them. This may be..... It appears, I am saddened to say that this is not that place. The food was pretty good for country cooking. I had the seafood gumbo which was tomato based, very hot and had crawfish only as the meat. I requested the red beans and rice was told that they did not have any. The only highlight was the grilled shrimp, they were very good tasting, they were 30-40 count size and the price was too high for the amount. The restaurant is designed well, the atmosphere is good. The food quality was not there. It is above average, but not worth the price that I paid this visit. I will try this place one more time, because everyone has a bad day. read more

I'm still trying to figure what the big deal is about this place. I mean honestly, so they serve what some might consider "Soul Food" but basically anyone who cooks Louisiana food who's from this area does nothing different. Someone turned some old house into a restaurant, well big deal! It looks dirty and the seating is very cramped. My table was next to a noisy a/c window unit with a filthy filter, with a dead fly on it. I've tasted much, much better red beans and rice from Popeye's for a fraction of the cost. The staff isn't friendly at all and never check to see if you need anything once they bring out your food. The whole place tries to come across as some hole in the wall restaurant in New Orleans and maybe appearance wise it looks like a place that was damaged heavily there from Katrina. When I first stepped in I honestly thought I'd fall through the floor. But you want New Orleans? Go to New Orleans! As always, anything here disappoints and this place is no different. read more

Quirky, authentic. Small restaurant under the bridge. Three generations cooking and serving. Got,the special, seafood gu Bo with tons of okr. Got. Side of red bens nd rice tht was perfectly cooked nd seasoned. Prices were stiff for what we got, must have special prices for tourists. One cup of gumbo, plus one bowl of gumbo and. Side of red bens, with two teas was $26 before tip. Tasty but pricey. read more
