a plate of fried chicken, mashed potatoes, peas, and a drink

Second timers and it was just as charming. From the tiny paper menu to the 4 entrees with all the trimmings, this place is adorable. I ordered the fried chicken and they did North Carolina proud. Crispy, juicy and tender. Just perfect really. My hubby and I ate a true southern supper for under $20. AWESOME! Can't wait til our next trip thru Mt. Olive! And the service? Southern hospitality all the way. A gem!

    a menu for the restaurant

I came here for lunch today. Its a nice sit down southern style restaurant that has the look and feel of being here awhile. They only take cash or local checks, no credit or debit cards. The staff is short in talking but courteous and friendly overall. The food also came out pretty timely from ordering. They have different menus every day that the post on their Facebook page, some sort meat accompanied by two sides. Two pieces of BBQ chicken with portions of string beans, apples and banana pudding would run you $8. I wish the portion was bigger and I hesitate to give it 5 stars as a result, but would give the place a solid 4.5. Facebook Page- www.facebook.com/Ritas-Place-362844990579551/

Food was excellent. Southern all the way. Couldn't ask for better unless my grandmother had made it herself.

The fried chicken was crispy and fried hard just the way I like it, with plenty of flavor in every bite. The greens were seasoned perfectly, and the yams were sweet with a great texture--not too hard and not too soft. I visited on a hot summer day, and the restaurant can get pretty loud and a little stuffy when it's busy. Thankfully, they had fans placed throughout the space, which made it much more comfortable. Overall, I enjoyed both the food and the atmosphere. If you're looking for good soul food and want to support a place with a meaningful mission, Whole Truth Lunchroom is worth a visit. I'd definitely go back.

A ministry of the church next door, Wilson's Whole Truth Lunchroom is a hidden gem. Located a few…read moreblocks from downtown and run by dedicated volunteers, this is an old school cafeteria with the type of food you'd expect from Southern church ladies. Dishes vary from day to day but the fried chicken, baked chicken, and fried pork chops are staples. Plates come with two sides and you can see from the photo why the blackeyed peas are so good (spoiler alert - it's bacon, lots of bacon). Collards are also delicious and the yams are mildly sweet without being cloying. The banana pudding is gloriously warm and the meringue is fluffy. The pudding is a touch too sweet and I could have done with more bananas but it was large enough to share. The staff is genuinely happy to see you and are happy to talk about their work, if you like. The room is a bit bare bones and the bathrooms are rudimentary and cramped but everything works. There is parking directly in front of the restaurant. Thanksgiving take-out is available for pre-order (see photo). I have a strong feeling you won't go wrong with any of the choices.
