Had lunch yesterday. Fried chicken was dry, asked for fresh fried breast, it was dry! The fried liver and gizzards were dry as well. The corn and butter beans were very good. The mashed potatoes were good. It's disappointing to dine out, for the price it costs, to be served "fresh" (dryed out) fried chicken. The entire family comes to Goldsboro on a weekend in Dec for Christmas with everyone at my mother in laws house. The last few years we have made it easier cooking wise to get food from McCalls. It was a great decision. They sell fried chicken, bar b q, hushpuppies, slaw, etc. The fried chicken is excellent and so is the bar b q. It was HORRIBLE!!! The service from workers as well as the food! We went through the drive thru after traveling from the beach and the girl that took our order acted as if we were bothering her. She was very rude and unprofessional!!! As for the barbecue, it was nothing but scraps and it was very, very greasy!!! It was like they scraped up any and everything they had left to fill our container with a pound of barbecue!!! Not to mention, this took place a little after 7pm on Sunday evening of June 28, 2026, about an hour before they were scheduled to close at 8pm. I patronize this place ALL the time. I actually grew up in the same area as the restaurant. My family and I have had birthday lunches and dinners at this place several times! I still have family members that live in the area and I will be sharing my experience with them and asking them to no longer patronize this establishment! Today I visited McCall's in Goldsboro, NC. During my visit, I observed a woman handling food with her bare hands. I immediately brought this to the manager's attention and requested that the food be removed. I also asked that my meal be taken off the check, as I had not touched my plate after witnessing this. Unfortunately, my concerns were not properly addressed. The food was not removed, and the manager refused to take my meal off the bill. Great, fresh, bbq buffet. One of the best left in the state. Nothing is not good country cooking. I was there at like 230 so not the normal lunch rush. The fried chicken barbecue the fried shrimp all hot fresh new items coming out to the bar. Less their hearts, they have three different cobblers banana pudding there never is and really never has been anything wrong with this restaurant. Had a group of 25 on Sept. 25,2025 . Called day before due to size of group. They were very accommodating. Plenty of wonderful and delicious choices on the buffet to choose from. I have always counted on the quality and familiarity of McCall's menu items. My family has relied on them for over 30 years. Lately there have been some less than favorable experiences, but that can happen to any business and I do take that into consideration. Tonight was another story. I spent close to $70 for food I just tossed in the trash it was so bad! (Exception was the bbq beef, the bbq sandwich, and the fried chicken, all were wonderfully cooked and tasty:)...evey side tasted like it was warmed ovet from last week! the Brunswick stew was so bad and had a spoiled, vinegary smell and taste; baked beans were a dried up glob of bean paste, potato salad was runny and overpowered by dill flavor. I visited this restaurant on yesterday. The ambience was county and southern. The outside appearance looked like a barn. The parking lot was packed as if it were Sunday. I purchased a Togo plate for almost $13 per pound. That was a red flag for me. The only food item that I enjoyed was the potato salad. The potato salad was no big deal; it tasted like store bought potato salad, and I ate it because I was hungry. The rest of the food was tasted overcooked, mushy, greasy, underseasoned, and overall undesirable. I'm not interested in a return visit, even though the cashiers were friendly. My main issue with this place is that the buffet has pans of food three deep, and so people reach over two pans of food to get to the back pin. While I was standing there I observed one lady with a dangly bracelet, whose bracelet dangled right into the food below it as she was reaching across. And another person was reaching across and I saw something fall off of her sleeve onto the food below. The way they have this setup is really unsanitary! The food itself wasn't terrible, some of it was actually pretty good, but it was nothing special. Even though they charge more on Sunday I don't see that there's anything different than what would be on a normal day. With tax it cost $20, and the drink is not included. Seems a bit pricey to me considering I've been to other Sunday buffets that had carved prime rib, omelet station, and the drink was included for the same price. My meal today was fine. Had lunch here which was a little let down as they don't have the seafood component at lunch on Thursdays. The fried chicken was good as well as the other vegetables and meats . The experience was just not and great as it has been in the past. Stopped in while I was in NC for a weekend trip. This place was recommended by a NC native so my expectations were high. I really wanted some GOOD BBQ. McCall may have been the bees knees a while back, but this place was underwhelming at best. The service was attentive and friendly and it was clearly a family friendly environment and people were coming in large groups. However, if we're talking BBQ, I'd recommend you look elsewhere. I went on a Sunday to eat lunch. Their Sunday price was way too high for the level of food I was getting. It cost me $2.79 for a sweet tea. As someone who as worked in the restaurant industry I know that they are probably spending less than 25¢ to make that sweet tea. Our waitress was very attentive at filling our drink glasses. Even with it being packed she made sure to check in on us occasionally. I had ribs, fried chicken, sweet potato casserole, greens, and hush puppies. The ribs and sweet potato casserole were pretty good for a buffet but the green were awful. By far the worst greens I've ever had in my life. McCalls recently catered my sons rehearsal dinner & everything was wonderful from beginning to end . Donna was excellent to work with making the arrangements, covered all the details. The entire team showed up on time & did the full set up & break down . The food was delicious! We had bbq & bbq chicken & all sides loaded mashed potatoes, baked beans , mac & cheese & slaw ( they have the best slaw in NC in my opinion) ! As far as buffets go, this place is terrific. They have a huge selection of fried seafood, barbecue, chicken and plenty of sides. I loved the crab cakes, the red beans and rice, pulled pork and the fried shrimp. Everything was fresh as the buffet was well tended. The service was also excellent. This isn't always the case at buffet restaurants. We also had McCalls takeout the next day for lunch. We had pulled pork sandwiches, which were topped with coleslaw. I'm not usually a huge slaw fan, but it was really good. All around, this place is pretty darn good. This has been a family favorite for years! We love coming here at lunch time for their buffet and sweet tea. BBQ is vinegar based and so tasty. They also have freshly fried chicken and sausage. I believe everyone goes out to eat in Goldsboro on Sundays. We were told it would be 15 minutes and it was right on the nose. The party of 17 just ahead of us waited over an hour. This is a buffet although you can order off the menu, and I did not see anyone doing that. LOTS of food choices from a well stocked salad bar to fried everything: fish and shrimp (not that good), chicken, chicken livers (overcooked), ribs, pork and Turkey BBQ, soups, breads (again more fried choices), pizza, biscuits, and desserts! There an a soft serve ice cream machine with toppings, or make your peach, blueberry, or apple cobbler ala mode. Baked goods too cookies, cake, and chew bread. Fresh fruit and sugar free pudding options available and of course banana pudding! New plates for every trip along with a face mask and fresh pair of disposable gloves were required. That's were the sanitation stopped. The ladies room was gross, disgusting and several stalls out of order. The bathroom clean up sheet was empty with nobody even claiming to clean up. When told the hostess was not apologetic and I did nothing to take immediate action that I saw. read more

Barbecue was a little dry and a little bland, but they did have shaker bottles of Eastern Carolina vinegar sauce on the tables. Great homemade slaw! Good fried cornbread and hush puppies to go with the meal. I only ate a small piece of the barbecued ribs, but it was excellent. BBQ chicken was also good. On the negative side, the fried fish was tasteless and tough.The fried oysters were...meh. Dessert table had a huge selection of choices, with the banana pudding being everyone's fave.
