Lee's ran out of the paint I was using to paint a wall that was halfway done, so I went over to Rittenhouse, and the super nice worker matched my color exactly even though it was a different brand of paint. I went here looking for a drill because my new place has plaster walls and it has been hard to put nails/screws in it. After asking about drills, the guy there asked me what I was doing and showed me a picture hanger that I could use instead of the drill. I ended up spending ~$4 when I had already committed to buying a $40 drill. That shows how awesome the experience was -- that the guy actually took a ~$35 loss because it was the right thing to do. I love this store. There's a dog the size of a bear, and a staff that's helpful and friendly without ever hovering. It's also remarkably well stocked for what looks like, on the outside, a small store. And the staff will go out of their way to accommodate your needs; when I wanted a dozen half-pint canning jars and could only find six, they let me pay for the dozen and said that I could pick up the other six in two days. I was convinced they wouldn't remember who I was, but sure enough, as soon as I got to the cash register on Friday, I had barely begun to describe my situation when the guy working the cash register (not the same guy as the one I'd spoken to a few days earlier) said 'yup' and pulled down the reminder about the jars that had been tacked above the register. I wandered into this place about 3 days after I moved to Philly, and I was happy to find the guys who work there are about as friendly and patient as can be. I'm generally embarrassed in hardware stores because I have no idea what I'm talking about, but over the past few months, the employees there have talked me through everything from changing light fixtures to catching--and killing--mice and roaches. And I kind of love how they'll just pull vacuum cleaner bags from the rafters or whatever. Places like this make me feel like I live in a real neighborhood. When my dad came to visit (ie, fix up my apartment), he was able to get what he needed, both in terms of materials and higher-level advice. Definitely beats driving to a big box store and then circling around Fitler Square looking for parking. read more

I just had some keys copied here and didn't have any cash so I handed him my credit card. He said that he would prefer if the total was more than $5 to use the card and I said I didn't have anything else to purchase, but it was almost $5. ($3.89) He handed me back my card and said he refused to ring it through b/c it costs them too much money and I ONLY bought 2 keys. I told him I didn't realize there was a minimum purchase amount. I told him it was illegal to deny me a credit card transaction, it was my only way to pay and he had already made the keys for me so he would be losing more that way. He proceeded to tell me off to the point at which I told him to get the manager. The gentleman behind me even told the guy it was disrespectful and rude the way he was conducting business and what he was doing was wrong. The manager told him to ring the transaction through using the card. He did, I signed the reciept. And he mumbled something very nasty to me under his breath which both I and the customer behind me heard. It is not something I would say here, but trust me, VERY rude and nasty!!!!!! Hands down my favorite STORE in the entire city. Not just favorite hardware store, but just favorite store. I love stopping in here when I need anything for around my apartment. These guys won't only just help you get what you need, but they will tell you how to do whatever it is you are doing if you are unsure. I haphazardly lost a set of hex screws -- the ones you need Allen keys to turn in -- for a desk during a recent move to Philadelphia, and my old roommate couldn't find it. What to do? I stopped by this place and Jesse was friendly and helpful in assisting me in finding the exact screws I needed (I wrote to the manufacturer to ask what they were; couldn't get replacement parts because I'd purchased the desk a long time ago). 8 hex screws for $2 - it doesn't get much better than that! I can't count the number of times I've hopped on my bike mid-DIY project and come out of here quickly with EXACTLY what I needed, but even more often, with a recommendation that was better/cheaper than what I thought I needed. They're not even expensive- I was cost comparing yesterday between here and Home Depot and stayed put with Rittenhouse Hardware. They are just so helpful, friendly, and kind. I was putting together some furniture for my new apartment on my only day off and I just couldn't keep using my tiny manual screwdriver anymore. So, I took a walk through my neighborhood and I came across Rittenhouse Hardware. The store was a little busy and it looked like they were restocking but as soon as I walked in one of the employees asked if he could help me find something. The staff is knowledgeable, extremely helpful, knows what they're talking about and always there to help with a project. Living in the city one is often forced to drive to a huge chain home improvement store. I managed to lose a bolt on my bike somewhere along my travels. I googled to see if I could find something local to my job that would have the appropriate part. I came across this gem. The guys at the counter were SUPER nice and helpful! The one who helped me just said bring the bike in and he litterally did all the work in finding the right bolt and washer in the store. The best hardware store around. The guys who hang out here always seem super friendly, cool and hipster-esque. There's also a store pet, a French Bulldog named Louie! I've always gotten great products no matter what I'm looking for (anti-roach, cleaner, scale, umbrella etc.) It's way better than Lee's hardware a few blocks up the street. read more
