I drive across the city to get keys made now instead of chancing a few trips to Home Depot. The amount of stuff packed into this place is impressive, and yet it doesn't feel cluttered. The people who work here are so knowledgeable. They are genuinely friendly and interested in helping a customer fix any problem and can always make useful suggestions and product recommendations. I came in recently about to give up on a furniture refinishing project, unable to get it to look the way I wanted and not wanting to buy new equipment. The person who helped me looked at photos I'd brought in and recommended a different kind of sandpaper and also instructed me in how to use the old-fashioned sander I already had more effectively. My wife and I were traveling with our disabled son visiting a school in the area. My son's wheelchair suddenly fell apart as a key bolt snapped in half. We obviously had no tools, and no spare parts with us. My wife found this hardware store to be within 2 miles of our downtown hotel. They were to only be open for another 30 minutes. I got in a cab with the chair and made it before they closed. Ian (who if isn't the owner, probably should be) took one look at me and my chair, and went into the back and retrieved a few bolts and a few spacers and then offered to put them in place for me. In 5 minutes he was done and we were good to go. I thanked him and reached for my wallet and he promptly told me I didn't owe him anything. I started to plead my case and he told me that the part was $1 and he sincerely enjoyed being able to help me out in my predicament. I am not suggesting that everyone else's experience will be like mine, but his response to me, "maybe someday our paths will cross again" reminded me of a old school family run business with real people who are allowed to care about their clients and spend time learning about what can be done to remedy the issue. My recent experience with other hardware stores (big box) will never sound like this. This place is a true gem, and while we are only visiting for a few days, this really gave us a warm and friendly opinion of this wonderful city. read more

The staff patiently helped me figure out what I would need to replace everything, and walked me through how to construct the table (the instructions the table came with had only pictures with nondescript pictures). This place is the greatest! The people I rent from told me to get my keys copied there, because their copies are accurate and won't screw up the locks. While I was there, I observed staff assisting other customers, doing small repairs, suggesting more economical options for their needs, all the while juggling several customers attentively. My brother, who has a construction business in North Jersey, was amazed at the wide and varied selection available in such a compact space, and pleased with the staff's knowledgable, friendly, efficient service. REMEMBER: There won't BE local independent stores if you keep giving your money to the big boxes, just to save a little money! read more

They're so friendly that it took me a while to realize I'd been sold several time things I didn't need (after asking their advice on picture-hanging). The prices are also high. I would like to rate them better because usually I like patronizing local business, but I always leave feeling like I've been taken slightly advantage of. Also by some quirk they have raised the floor behind the cash register very high so that whoever is working there towers over you, and you are reduced to a child's height (especially if you are a petite woman like me). I don't know if they think it's funny, or it's a feature of a bad layout, but it's unpleasant and for that reason alone I would like to find an alternative to buying from them. read more

I've been to this store a couple of times over the past few months, and it is probably the best hardware store in the area, simplified by the fact that there isn't all that much competition. The staff there is courteous and knowledgable, and always seem willing to deal with amateur manual laborers like me and my convoluted descriptions of what I need. During my most recent visit, I didn't realize that they have a $5 minimum on debit/credit purchases, so they let me walk out with a copy of an apartment key that failed to meet that threshold. I walked back in a couple of minutes later, realizing that I had needed to get a ratchet handle to replace the one that had gone missing from my tool box, which solved my apparent dilemma. i have no idea about prices or anything but i love the guys who work here. i just like to but the occasional keychain. but the personality of this place, oh wow. my five stars is from one anecdotal experience, but oh boy was that a good experience. so a few days ago my garbage disposal broke. i think it's because i put a whole head of brocolli down the drain, but let's not tell my roommates, okay? anyways, so i called the landlord and to make a long story short the landlord's wife said, "tough luck, we're going to the jersey shore." so after a few days of sticking my hand down the drain to remove coffee grounds and bits of radish i thought, screw this, i'm gonna get me some draino. so i went to rittenhouse hardware. "hey do you have any draino?" "sure, the regular stuff or harder stuff?" "harder stuff. It's for a kitchen sink." "do you have a garbage disposal?" "yeah. It's broken. i called my landlord but god knows when he will come by." "do you have any allen keys?" "yeah." he proceeded to tell me how to fix the garbage disposal and therefore not give him money. only once has that happened to me before, some crazy guy in an electronics shop in baltimore told me how to fix my turntable. i don't have an established political opinion on box store hardware store, but i swear in those places the employees are trying to hide from me. not that i blame them of course.... done and done. read more

Stopped in this morning in a rush to buy twine and didn't have the cash for such a small purchase in lieu of the card, and he just gave it to me with the receipt and said to stop back and pay him later. I loooooooooove these guys. Everyone who works here is super friendly, super knowledgeable, and super helpful. I've been shopping here for four years and could probably count on one hand the number of times they haven't had what I'm looking for. And if they don't have it, they will order it for you at no extra cost. The prices are very reasonable. I feel very confident following the employees' advice. Also, the store is dog-friendly and I love any place like that. They are open 7 days a week and fairly late on weeknights which is helpful. Please go here before you head to a big box store. Quite possibly one of the worst hardware stores ever. With the big boxes likes Lowes and Home Despot offering poor service, you'd expect your local hardware store to compete on selection and service. Well, that's not the case here. Store doesn't carry a selection of even the basics for a city resident (no mail slots, tiny selection of circuit breakers, almost no hardware - buts/blots/brackets/etc). Staff is unwilling to order items + not knowledgeable in even the simplest home repairs. Unfortunately, if you need hardware in this neighborhood, look elsewhere. read more

I love hardware stores. I love Rittenhouse Hardware store. This little neighborhood store is packed to the rafters with all sorts of useful things. Previously, I had searched the city for a sturdy step stool at a decent price (including places like KMart) and ended up back in my own 'hood: Not only was it sturdy, it was a good price AND it had a safety release button - none of the other stores could say that. My recent trip was for a few odds and ends - including ice cube trays and a small bucket - and they had everything I needed and I spent only $8 for a (new) bucket full of stuff. The staff here is also great. As an earlier reviewer mentioned, they're very friendly and helpful without hovering. I have to confess, though, that my favorite thing about the place is the overall atmosphere -- the combination of the old and new. At it's heart, it's an old-school hardware store, with the old wood floors and all, but it also has an urban edge in the shape of a couple of heavily tattooed staffers who are friendly, helpful and know their merchandise. I love it ... oh, and I've also gotten a decent cheesesteak recommendation from them. read more
