Staff are friendly and very efficient. As soon as you walk in the store you are greeted and asked what you need. My landlord recommended this place to me when I was trying to mount my TV, and I'm so glad he did! I needed some drywall anchors (and I later went back for a 1/2 inch drillbit), so I came in her for some advice. They pointed me to the exact spot in the store I needed to be and made some recommendations after asking me some targeted questions. I have been shopping here since the day they opened over twenty years ago and have come to know these fine folks. It amuses me that some people think they are expensive since they can't compete with Home Depot on prices. Duh. My boyfriend and I popped into Rittenhouse Hardware this morning to pick up a few supplies. Compared to the home improvement giants, the store was minuscule, but every square inch of space was taken up by gadgets and tools. As one employee worked on making us key copies, another was available to tell us exactly where to find everything on our list. Both knew the merchandise inside and out, and we received helpful tips whenever we were stuck deciding between items. The experience was quick, painless and dare I say, fun? This is just a great hardware store. They carry most everything and I have never struggled to find whatever it is that I am looking for. The only downsides are the price (a little steeper than your warehouse hardware store - but still reasonable) and that they close at 3pm on the weekend. I know that everything in Philadelphia shuts down on Sunday so I should be thankful for the 3pm close. However, Sunday is kind of a big day for dealing with household things so a 5pm close would be greatly appreciated. Also, the owner (the "perfect man" as he is referred to among the women I know) has a pretty kickass and chill massive dog. Although he (the dog) has off one day during the week, I think Wednesdays. Well, me and the "Rittenhouse Hardware" go back to my first day living in Philadelphia. I ran out to this place on my move in day to get a tool to assemble some furniture. This place is really quaint on the inside with stuff sorted all the way to the ceiling. I have found that the staff is very friendly and helpful, although, I've never asked for real fixer upper questions. The downsides to this place are that they know their location (Rittenhouse) and charge way too much for almost everything in the store. It kills me to have to pay 2x the price of what I normally would pay at Home Depot or even my hometown local hardware store in Glastonbury, CT. I remember having to buy a large sponge (among other things) to clean my walls and they were selling one for $7! This thing goes for $4 tops at any other place (including supermarkets). In addition, they stock a lot of hardware stuffs, but they lack a lot of necessities that people just moving in or that urban dwellers need for their apartments. I asked why they didn't carry things for the kitchen or bathroom and they said that "they didn't want to be that kind of store". To me, that's like opening a convenience store in the middle of a desert and saying "we don't carry drinks of any kind." They are one of the only games in town at this end of Rittenhouse and they force people to go out to Target to get necessities. What do you think I'm doing in my 1 BDRM apartment? Building a deck? (Most likely I'm just trying to hang up a shower curtain). I will say that recently they rearranged their store so the floor space is much better utilized. If you are looking for HARDWARE and household fix up stuff, this place is clean, friendly, and well stocked. There is never a type of store that exemplifies the debate between large stores and small stores like hardware stores. Lowes and Home Depot suck when it comes to getting anything besides lumber, appliances, and toilets. Do you need a circlip remover? These places, despite their size, only have one and it's super expensive. Local Hardware stores can be a mixed bag. They might have what you need, they might not. On top of that, the dusty antiquated good you need is super expensive as the four dudes working there need to pay their mortgage. And frankly, the service can be down right creepy and invasive. This place, is neither. I needed a metric screw, nut, and two washer. Not only did they have it but pointed me in the direction. Once I put said goods on the counter and recited the prices, they insisted that I just give them 50¢. The store seemed very compact but extremely organized. Sure, it's more expensive than Lowes but what do you expect from a small store in the Rittenhouse Square area, they have to cover their ground rent/mortgage. I've always found the staff here to be extremely helpful. When I walk in there and suggest some kind of ridiculous fix I am trying to do, they politely suggest different ways of doing things. They do it without seeming condescending as well, which is quite a talent (especially considering how stupid my ideas generally are). I don't think I would have the self control not to call me an idiot. Snowstorm in Philly and one of the center city hardware stores actually has shovels and rock salt. Miracle? No. Strategic, intelligent and typical work on the part of the Rittenhouse Hardware people? Most freakin' likely. Not only did we get what we actually needed (amazing!), but we also managed to find various and assorted other constructo-fixo mechanisms and baubles. Granted, the prices are a great deal higher than the big HD, but for the convenience it is worth it. Final comment: The Mr. behind the counter reminded me that should I have to drop something on the walk home (I was carrying a great deal) I should forego the rock salt to save the beer. The most helpful and friendly employees I've ever encountered at a hardware store. I purchased something that was around $4 and unfortunately, I only had my card and $2. The guy took my $2 and told me to give him the rest the next time I came in. Really?! This is 2014, right?! Of course, I made good on my promise and the next time I came in, I paid up and even purchased some paint, which was quite easy since I've never painted anything in my life. The best part about going to a hardware store staffed by hipsters is that they'll give you advice on the DIY bike project you messed up and were picking up spare parts for. For me, that advice happened to be that I shouldn't buy the extra parts that I had stopped in to buy. Also, they're crammed full of stuff and cut keys quickly. Their stock is such that someone like me (who only occasionally tinkers around the house) can find what she needs in small packages ("I can't mess up with the zip-ties more than 8 times, can I?!"), but they also have bigger packages of stuff for people who are working on Serious Projects (yeah, they also had several 100 zip-tie selections). read more

It's convenient, but you definitely pay a premium for it. I had to install curtain brackets and needed some screws. I was greeted and offered assistance immediately. I showed him my screw, he asked how many I want, I said I'll take 10 of them, he said okay it's $5 and change, and then money was exchanged. They were some pricey screws, but service was great. It's convenient and close by. Let's just say, if I were building a house from scratch, Rittenhouse Hardware wouldn't be my choice supplier. It's definitely handy to have a hardware store within walking distance of southwest Center City. I'd called ahead of time to make sure they carried mesquite wood chips and the guy who answered the phone was pretty friendly. Not surprisingly, though, there aren't many choices on inventory. I needed a nut to match a bolt that somehow went missing from my bedframe. Since it went missing, my bed has been leaning to one side. I went to Lowe's originally but had no luck there. The second I walk into Rittenhouse hardware, two of the employees immediately help me to find the missing nut. Seems there's something wrong with the thread of the bolt I brought in (which is probably why I couldn't find a nut before on my own). They ring me up for a new bolt and nut set with a washer for 25 cents. They spent an incredible amount of time helping me for a 25 cent purchase!!! The staff here is knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly, which is useful whether you know exactly what you need, have no idea what you're doing, or are somewhere else on the spectrum in between (and, admittedly, depending on the occasion, I've been on any segment of that spectrum...). The prices are reasonable and a downright bargain considering you don't have to deal with the hassle of driving (and by that I mean slowly inching along in traffic) to the big box stores on Columbus and wandering the enormous caverns of stuff for little things. I usually let all the little jobs pile up until I have the gumption to drive to South Philly to one of the major hardware chains. Once in these behemoth stores I am instantly overwhelmed by all the product that is for major home renovation. At Rittenhouse Hardware, you will easily find everything you need for the fix this and touch up that situations that seem to arise more often than you would like. A small space with a ton of stuff, it is pretty easy for even a novice to find what you need. Helpful young staff will give you advice if you need it. While browsing the shelves I found more than I needed, so be careful. You may go in for a nut and bolt, and come back with the makings for a whole new project. read more

The sink is stopped up in Center City, so where do you go? You could go to CVS; but they'll mysteriously be missing essential items for your little project - like plungers. So I wandered over to Rittenhouse Hardware to see what they could do for me. The service was great, especially compared to the large national hardware chains. That was probably because the Employee to Customer ratio at Rittenhouse was nearly infinite. When I first walked in I thought to myself, "wow, a lot of people needed to unclog their sinks this fine Thursday afternoon." Then I realized all 5 of the people in the store were working there. Someone immediately asked me what I needed as I started wandering around, and he ultimately guided me to the right kind of plunger to unclog my sink - including advice about stopping up the overflow drain so that my plunging efforts wouldn't be completely futile. Not only that, they had no fewer than 3 kinds of plungers, in the words of the guy helping me, "from cheap to expensive." Once he knew I was working on a sink he recommended, "the cheap one." Yes, the prices are a bit steeper than you'll see in the 'burbs so it's not perfect. This place is walking distance from center city though, so I'm not sure you can complain too much. They also do seem to be in a permanent state of rearranging the store. Depending on what you are looking for, it might be nicely arranged on the wall or just in a pile of junk on the floor. I recommend simply asking someone for help and they'll have your water draining again in no time. read more

Very bad experience. Several prices were incorrect and I was overcharged on two items at the register. Quarts of white paint were marked $11.99 on the shelf, but they attempted to charge me $15.99 for the same quart of paint in a different finish. They argued that the semi-gloss was more than the gloss paint.... by 4 whole dollars? I was also overcharged on another item, which was marked $3.49 on the shelf and they attempted to charge me $5.49 instead. When I noted the price difference, they checked the price and grudgingly reduced the price to $4.99, claiming that the items were in the wrong place on the shelf. But all of the other items of that variety were in one place, above the price marked $3.49. So, yeah, mis-marked and unclearly marked items that resulted in being overcharged and the staff giving me attitude and arguing with me over the incorrect prices. I won't be shopping there again and I recommend that anyone who does shop there should be very careful and confirm the prices before check out. It was a very poor experience. read more

Was in and out in less than 30 seconds having been greeted at door and asked how the person could help. Honestly. I'm surprised there are any bad reviews of his hardware store. Are their prices perhaps a little higher than Lowes, and is there selection a little thinner...... of course they are. They're not a huge chain so you have to expect that!! What you get at Rittenhouse hardware is a true old-timey courtesy that you can hardly find anymore. I've gone in there on many occasions wanting to do a small job around my house but having no idea how and left with both the tools and materials as well as some direction on how to get it done.
