I don't write many review on Yelp but I was very impressed with Rittenhouse hardware on my latest trip to pick-up a few things today. I anticipated a wait + bit of an hassle to shop around on a Saturday afternoon. However, these guys know what they are doing. They are well-staffed on busier days and I've always seen at least one person on the floor + one at the counter even on a week day, which means you're not wandering around aimlessly looking for supplies. Within moments of walking in, I had my random list of items from door knobs to pepper spray (which was an awesome surprise since I had no clue where to find that stuff). Overall, they make the most of their prime location but somewhat smaller space (in comparison to an Ace or Walmart that is) with great employees that know what they're doing + a great variety of products that are main-stays for fixes and home improvements. As a novice to changing locks and using Spackling walls, they kind of made my afternoon. Kudos to management and to your awesome team! read more

Every time I go here, I can't believe how quickly I leave! It's such a blur because I never get more than a foot inside the door before I'm asked what I need help with. They find it, I pay, boom, done. When I do need a bit more consultation, they are still amazing. I had to order a new handle/lock for my front door and I ended up behind the register looking at products on a computer with one of the staff so they could order exactly what I wanted. When it came in a few days later, somehow about $30 was knocked off the price. They're so nice, they don't make me feel stupid (when it comes to home ownership, I am a little dumb), and they give great advice about the biggest or smallest products even if I'm spending just a few dollars. read more

Every time we come here, we are always assisted in a very pleasant manner. The last time we came, we were debating over mousetraps. Should we catch it and let it free or just plain out kill it? An employee advised us that a mouse will find its way back to us if it's less than a mile away - leaving us with one option. Without their helpful advice, we would have foolishly let the little rodent outside, only to surprise us later on. Along with their superior customer service, they carry a wide variety of products and have reasonable prices. Definitely a fan and will continue to support their business! read more

Why would you go anywhere else? The entire staff is knowledgeable and happy to help with any questions. Someone (I can't remember his name!) helped me find exactly what I needed for several hooks I wanted to hang, explained how to use the screw anchors and what the different ones are for, and then cut wood to size so I could hang rods in my closet. He knew exactly what I would need to avoid messing with the steel studs in my building. He then gave such great directions that we were able to install the rods in one evening. I wouldn't have attempted something like that on my own before, but his instructions and advice were so clear. The previous day, I went to a Loews and Home Depot and the staff there were unhelpful and rude - what a relief to go to Rittenhouse Hardware! I would never go anywhere else in the future! read more

I wanted to leave this place a review because I had such a lovely interaction on my first visit without actually finding what I needed! I was looking for a very specific product in a specific quantity and while they were unable to provide me with the item the employees provided me with multiple suggestions for where to go to get it as well as other options (even if they didn't carry them!). I really appreciated their helpfulness as well as candor with trying to help me find the product that I needed regardless of if they carried it! I just moved to the Grad Hospital neighborhood and feel confident this will be my new hardware go to! read more

Quick'n'easy, i.e., my favorite way to run errands! Had to get a couple key copies made on a Friday evening. Walked in and was greeted promptly: handed over the keys to copy and the copies were ready lickety split! Decided to get a few other things "while we're here" and the minute I mentioned them, we were immediately led to where they were in the store and shown how they worked and our color/price options. Will definitely return for our random hardware needs! (I wonder if they have custom-cut simple curtain rods, like Kilian's Hardware in Chestnut Hill...) read more

This dog friendly shop is perfect for center city dwellers who don't have a car. Last weekend I stopped in for some plant food. I was assisted immediately and shown their wide variety of fertilizers - they had exactly what I needed for my acid loving plant. The total cost? About $5, no crazy markups here. Too bad my plant died from these sub-freezing temps before I got a chance to feed it. Will no doubtably be back for other household needs. Gosh, I can't believe I haven't reviewed this place yet. Rittenhouse Hardware has been a godsend from day one of moving into CC. No one likes waking up after your first night only to find a wee mouse sniffing around the kitchen, and given that this was my first experience with any rodent problem I opted to go to professionals. The guys were really nice (I'm sure being a lone, cute girl with no knowledge of tools helps) and helped me find steel wool to plug up that hole behind the stove and a suitable mousetrap (a role that now my two kitties can fill). They also explained how to install some weather stripping around my door. The store seems really tiny when you first walk in, but somehow they've managed to pack in EVERYTHING you could possibly need in a hardware store, and then some. Its overwhelming the first few times you go in, so just ask for help and rest assured that the staff will gladly guide you to the proper nook and cranny where the item you're looking for is located. Now, whenever I have any home repair related issues I go straight to them. read more

Like many others, I only go here in a pinch, but they definitely have a ton of items that will most likely meet your needs in a tiny little store. Prices are fair, not absolute bargains. I've gotten bungee cables and mouse traps from here. Sometimes I just go to browse. The customer service is top notch - very friendly and helpful and trying to push their product. They always are happy to give information or share tips to help someone out. If you live in the area and ever happen to need something "hardware" related, it's worth stepping in to see what they've got. You'd be surprised. read more

I'm kind of shocked to read about Andrew's experience here. I absolutely love this place... and on an equal note, I despise corporate hardware. I am the farthest guy on earth from Tim "the tool man" status, so when I come in here, I depend on the staff to help me, which they always have. I've never needed to special order anything, but I'm still not convinced that that's impossible. For such a small space, this place has everything I ever need... and I keep coming back. I'd even go as far as to say that I'd pay more here than I would at a big chain, but I don't even really think that's the case. Stopped by here last weekend to get new drywall anchors. The staff were extremely helpful and quickly found the correct size for my screws. On top of that, they didn't even bother charging me since I guess two plastic anchors aren't really worth it. Bottom line, our coat rack is hanging happily again and we'll definitely try to stop by here in the future. read more

This is a great neighborhood hardware store. They have mostly general household items, so they do not have a lot of specialty items. The service is wonderful! As soon as you enter, they ask what you are looking for, bring you to the items. They are really friendly, and sometimes there is evening a doggie helper to brighten your day :) There are a few hardware stores in the graduate hosptial/Rittenhouse area, and we this is definitely our go to! read more

I cannot pass up browsing a small, independent hardware store because you never know what you are going to find. Perhaps it is that one needed item to finish a project that was waylaid months ago. Perhaps it is something that you didn't know you needed. Either way, you often leave thinking, "my life is going to be better now." My boyfriend and I were passing this store on our way to Honey's for breakfast when it occurred to me that he needed a wrench to fix his leaking cold water supply pipe. In nothing flat we were pointed to the tools section and a perfect Stanley wrench. I pride myself on organization, but even I was amazed at the selection that was organized in clean, clear, and almost modular fashion. The salespeople obviously take pride in their workshop like store and are genial enough to point you in the right direction should you be lost. In a short time, I was highly impressed. I almost want to invent some project just to go back and feel that my life is about to be more complete. read more

I didn't realize how essential hardware stores are to a neighborhood until you are in dire need of one. After moving into my first big-girl apartment, I discovered that I needed to figure out how to adult and this place was so helpful in my attempt to do just that. As soon as I walked into the store, I was greeted immediately and asked if I needed any assistance. They must have known that I didn't have a clue what I was doing! I explained to them my current project and one of the helpful individuals brainstormed what I needed and pointed out exactly what I needed. They were extremely helpful, but not in a condescending manner, which I appreciated greatly! They had quick the selection of tools, widgets, and thingamabobs, and I'm sure you'll be able to locate exactly what you're looking for! This is such an awesome neighborhood spot. My grandpa used to take me to a hardware store like this when I was growing up in Washington. I thought "real" hardware stores were all gone but then I moved here and YAY! It's the kind of place where you end up chatting with your neighbors about the weather or mouse traps or flower pots. The guys do help you and I've never been given the "girl" treatment. For the men folks in the audience this is where a store either, tries to up sell you because your ovaries make you too stupid to know how much paint you need, or they try to sell you the dainty version of things because you won't be able to handle a drill bigger than a toothbrush or some such shiz. Never happens at Rittenhouse, plus I wander in there all the time with a problem that I want to fix but a fuzzy idea of how to do it. I always walk out with just exactly what I need to get it done. More than once I have been about to make a selection to have the guy tell me "Oh, this one will do the same thing for half the price." For spending less than 10 minutes in this place, I got a very good impression and wish I had more time! I woke up this morning and remembered I needed to bring screws to an art installation today after work. I looked up the hours of 1540 Hardware on Passyunk (my local hardware store which is equally awesome), but they didn't open til 8:30am and are also a little out of my way on my morning commute. I found Rittenhouse Hardware after a Google search in Center City and they are on my way and opened at 8! When I got there, I noticed the pretty flowers outside and other gardening/ outdoor equipment they had out front and liked what I saw. When I walked in the man at the front immediately asked if I needed assistance and I said, "Yes, I'm in a hurry." He was tentative to my needs and extremely helpful. And as another yelper mentioned, I also did not recieve the "girl" treatment. I told him which screws I needed and not only did he show me where they were, but he also counted them out for me and threw in a few extra "just in case." He also said he'd ring me up with a student discount without me giving any mention. Bonus! I'm mean it was only a couple cents off because it was such a small purchase, but still, very thoughtful. This place is incredibly friendly with amazing customer service. I don't live in the neighborhood, but I'll try to stop by whenever I can. Also they take cards! I never carry cash. My total purchase for 30 3in wood screws was $7.88. I don't have much to compare it to, but I'd say that's a deal. And if not, I'd rather support a mom and pop shop anyway. read more

If you're doing a huge project this place probably isn't the best option. But for small, every day fixes/installations I would come here every time. It's in a convenient location, the staff is helpful (and bluntly honest about some things - I appreciate the lack of BS), and they pack a lot of stuff into a small place. There's a laid back atmosphere about this place, but the guys know their stuff. Glad to have them in the neighborhood. read more

So Yelp gives this advisory when you start writing a review, something along the lines of "Please keep in mind businesses are trying their best during the virus." and that's fine. However, businesses' behavior, treatment, response, AND personal choices during these times are exemplary and very telling about who the people you are giving your money to actually are. So here we go. What the men, and I use this term very loosely, at this hardware store have been manifesting during this crisis is nothing short of overtly annoying neurotic psychosis. I understand that everybody in America's major cities is under a psychotic paranoid fear of the invisible, so every time I go shopping I'm like "Ok, which cowards and liars am I patronizing today?" and now, as I pass by Rittenhouse Hardware, I'm like "Yeah, not these ones." "Ermegerd, DoNt stAnD oVEr ThERe!!! ERMEGERD, ThE VIRuS, ERMEGERD, tHE MaSK, ERMEGERD, mY AsSsSsS!!!" Well, dude, how am I possibly supposed to pick up the things I want to purchase from you, thus enabling the system of exchange you signed up for? Purchasing something involves mutual agreement. We don't have it when you are not ALLOWING me to spend a literal fraction of a second picking up the product because you are afraid the virus "ermegerd" may start jumping up and down like a flea and enter your butthole. These specific guys have made it so that it is actually physically truly difficult and extremely unpleasant to shop there. I stopped patronizing this store when I first saw the fearful beady eyes of one of the traumatized clerks and don't plan on ever spending my money there again. I'm sure if they are reading this review, they wouldn't want me there either, and that's fine by everyone. If asked by someone who has a functioning non-traumatized brain, however, I wouldn't recommend the place. You may catch a much more dangerous irreversible contagion. Otherwise, if you suffer from severe hypoxia and shredded testicles, and if you are currently developing persistent mold and yeast thanks to your masks whilst actively and willfully reducing your immune capabilities, this is the place for you. All that being said, my review of this store makes sense to the people who are able to see the big picture. I don't hold anybody else, those who may consider these guys' behavior as thoughtful and cautionary, to any reasonable, non-fictional standard or expectation. I have compassion for you, I understand your inability and refusal to wake up. If you do, you wake up to a nightmare. read more

This is by far my favourite hardware shop in Philadelphia. I get myself involved in adventurous home improvement/crafting/gardening projects with some regularity, but I'm hardly knowledgeable about tools or building materials. No matter how poorly articulated or vague my question is, however, the gentlemen who work there have always found an answer for me. I would recommend 10th street over this place as the workers did not really respect me as a female shopper. They kept coming up to me and asking 'are you scared yet' or 'are you lost, you shouldn't be here'. Rittenhouse hardware is friendly and carries an extensive selection of miscellaneous items that you may need : including paint and tools, household items and cleaning supplies, and much more. However the prices reflect their Rittenhouse Square location, you're paying a lot without getting a lot. In addition, every time I have keys made there they do not function. I am consistently astounded at how helpful everyone is in this store. Today, I needed a hex key that was between the sizes of the two I brought in. They accommodated me extremely quickly. I felt bad only paying $0.75 for the item. I can't recommend these guys enough! read more

This place is awesome. The store can seem a bit overwhelming since there are a ton of things crammed into their small space, but the people that work here are extremely knowledgeable and know where everything is located. Shockingly, the prices aren't expensive for a Rittenhouse establishment and they have a wide array of items- from cleaning supplies, gardening supples, power adapters, converters, and they even make keys here. I really like this hardware store. Having had to deal with unpleasant experiences at Lee's Hardware (at 20th & Spruce) for far too long, at just a block south at 20th & Pine, Rittenhouse Hardware is a total breath of fresh air. The staff are super nice and always willing to help (which is especially beneficial for me, as knowing what I need or where it's located is not one of my strong suits). You're not made to feel like an idiot if you are borderline-clueless about hardware store items. Prices are reasonable and the atmosphere is very laid-back. But, again, the biggest plus is the staff, who couldn't be friendlier--the polar opposite of Lee's. Can't recommend this store highly enough. read more

Everytime I come here, I'm always greeted by someone who is eager to help. I don't know how they pack all of the merchandise in such a small place.
