Step in for the little slice of Americana that is the independent hardware store. Have a key made,…read moremix some paint, purchase some glass or screen or pipe or wire--custom cut to your specifications. Pick up some sandpaper, some fire ant killer, some wood glue and a wrench. Is it a hammer you are looking for? Choose between ball peen, claw, rubber or sledge. Something that cuts? Peruse the hatchet and axe and lopper and pocket knife selections. Nab a nut, buy a bolt, put your DIY hat on and become one with your inner HGTV star who's been fighting to get out. No Drago Hardware doesn't offer the variety of Home Depot, nor the volume pricing of Lowe's, but it kills the big boxes in customer service and charm. On my recent visit, I caught the owner wiring a light kit onto a ceiling fan for a customer...at no charge. How is that for service? When you shop at Drago Hardware you are supporting the dwindling small business community in Port Arthur and the Drago family which has operated this enterprise since 1931.

I needed a tool for my water meter so I could have functioning utilities. Mind you that I also had to be to work so I was moving expeditiously. This morning I went to Drago Hardware Co.1900 9th Ave. Port Arthur TX. As I go to checkout an employee at the register was casually talking with another civilian that wasnt making a purchase. I ask if I can be checked out. He looks at me with disgust. Raises his voice As if I was across the store to tell me how rude I am. Only to be followed by derogatory and racists remarks; such as "your people won't ever get ahead" and "you'll just end up in prison" all because I asked to be checked out. His actions can not be justified. I was bothered by my experience. I thought for certain that type of behavior wasn't tolerated at the store , but unfortunately that was just the tip of the iceberg. I call the location to speak with a manager to inform of the situation. I noticed she seemed uneased with attitude galore. I can only assume because of my distinguished African American accent. I asked how she was doing only to be insulted again. She replied with "fine up until this phone call" followed by a dial tone. I will be having a peaceful protest until this is brought to light .

We ordered a LOT of wood in several different kinds from Wes Vice for our new house. First, of all…read morethe wood and cut were high quality. Second of all, the customer service of everyone we encountered was exactly what we all remember customer service being like back in the good old days. From Wes himself down to the guys who delivered the wood, everyone seemed happy in their job and it reflected in their attitudes towards us. We also ordered wood from two other places, but Wes Vice's wood was the easiest to work with because the lines were clean and straight and the edges fit together perfectly whereas the other stuff required some finagling to get it to fit right and stay straight. What really won us over though, was a miscommunication regarding the cut of our wood. It wasn't what we thought we had ordered. When we expressed that to Scott, he and his team picked up the wood, brought it back to the shop, recut the edges the way we wanted them, and redelivered the wood to our house all without charging us AND with a positive attitude. The way they handled the whole process was top notch. We will be ordering ALL future wood from these guys not just because of the awesome customer service, but also because of the quality of the wood and cut.

Went in to buy a router bit. It turned into an ordeal. They Couldn't find the key to router bit case. The woman goes to answer the phone leaving me standing at the case. She takes multiple calls and waits on two customers. I'm still waiting. A employee sees me standing at the case and asks if he can help me. I say Yes, I need that bit. He unlocks the case and hands me the bit. I walk over to pay for it. The woman asks me how I got in the case. I tell her. She freaks out and leaves to go find who gave me the bit. I left and went to Lowe's for router bit. Go back for a custom piece of S4S poplar board. Talk to a guy in the back who writes what I need on a piece of paper and tells me to have the woman at front desk to price it. The woman interprets the note incorrectly. I tell her what I want. She says that's not what is written on the paper. I say Fine and tell her what I want. She then starts asking me again what I want. I start telling her. She talks over me before I can finish the answer then asks again what I want. I then change my tone, body posture and volume to say, "Ms I've been telling you what I need. You aren't listening. Please stop talking over me and listen". She stands up says "You're a man, this happens a lot. I'll go get my husband so you can talk man to man" I walk out. I won't go back there no matter they might have what I need. Poor customer service skills.
