Amazing gelato in Florence! I was here around 9 PM and a bunch of college students were here. Only one guy was working by himself - poor guy! It's a small space inside; not much seating. All the flavors are listed on the wall. Samples are allowed. This is helpful. I ended up with a small size cup €3 with two flavors: yogurt and caffe. The pistachio was good too. Despite appearances suggesting a safer setup (gelato stored in separate containers and a new, clean spoon used), there was cross-contamination. My daughter, who has a severe allergy to cashews and pistachios, had an allergic reaction after eating here and we ended up having to take her to the emergency room while on vacation. I want to share this not to criticize the taste or staff intentions, but to warn other families managing food allergies. The best gelato, even the best frozen milk-based dessert I have ever had! We came here on our last night in Florence for an adult dinner of gelato and found everything we were looking for and more. I had the Crema Buontalenti, featuring delicate honey and lemon flavors. The husband chose Cremina Rivareno, with white chocolate, hazelnuts, and giandula swirl. Both were just heavenly. Unlike the places with the helot piled high (which means it has to be hard and somewhat crystallized), this gelato is kept in covered pots, probably the very same ones used to churn it. It is so creamy there is no way it could be stacked high. Also, there aren't 35 flavors to choose from, which is another sign of quality. The flavors offered are thoughtful and meant to highlight the natural flavors of the ingredients, masterfully combined for your enjoyment. I definitely recommend this place for gelato! read more

I have learned much in my short time in Firenze, but perhaps no more important or impactful than the following statement: If gelato is displayed as visible, turn and SPRINT away like Usain Bolt at the 2012 London Olympics or Tom Cruise in any Mission Impossible movie. Gelato should be served ONLY in a stainless-steel container that is completely covered, and with a metal spade as opposed to an ice cream scoop. This is exactly how Rivareno does things. The beautiful thing about this place is that it is not overrun with tourists yet, the cat is still in the bag. You have the rare opportunity to see a Leonardo that has yet to be attributed. I got the Stracciatella (obviously) and strawberry. An odd combo, I know, but I'm kind of an odd guy. The strawberry was the best fruit flavored gelato or ice cream I have ever had and the stracciatella was everything I wanted it to be and then some. Also, they have a cone cup. What an innovation. My fiancé said she heard from an Italian friend that the best gelato places have covered bins for the gelato, but none of the places before had covered gelato tins--this place does! Funny that my most religious experience, in a city filled with some of the most famous cathedrals and religious iconography in the world, was at Rivareno. Holy cow, thank you for the gift of your milk that contributes to the crafting of this truly transcendental gelato. My daughter and I stumbled into this place today. The first thing one notices from the street is the glowing counter that slowly changes color. On entering I first noted that, rather than artfully displaying the gelato in the window as with most places in town, the gelato was all under stainless steel lids. That got my attention. Then the menu revealed some very inventive flavors. Rather than get the small that we usually get we went for a medium, which is the same price as the small cups at most places over near the Duomo. And, holy cow, were we glad we did. My daughter got Hazelnut and Almond. They were intense. Just amazing. I ordered the Alice (say ah-LEE-che), with mascarpone and chocolate, plus a Crema Fiorentina - a custard with hints of citrus. Oh. My. God. We both agreed it was the best gelato we've had. I was not surprised to get to Yelp tonight and find that others agree. It's a little away from the touristy parts of Florence. That's a feature, not a bug. Take the short walk. You'll be glad you did. UPDATE: We went back today. Daughter had (very dark) cioccalato and cinnamon. Yes, cinnamon gelato. Out of this world. I tried the New York, New York (maple syrup and toasted pecan): Smoother than Sinatra in his prime. And Limone, which is just intensely lemon. We have no plans to get gelato anywhere else on this trip. If there is better gelato anywhere on the planet, please oh please tell me where it is. A real EXPERIENCE not just a trip to the Gelato shop. One of the employees named Marco, always provides wonderful service with a SMILE and has truly made coming to this gelato shop a wonderful time. Marco was able to help my friends and I pick flavors that we wouldn't have previously picked if it hadn't been for his suggestions. Let's not forget about the Gelato, which is beyond AMAZING here! The best pistachio gelato I have ever had, and I've been to all over Italy (more than 10 cities) trying them. Also the best rendition using roasted pistachio paste. There are two types of pistachio gelato there, Salty and sweet (with bits of a caramelized toffee-like crunch) and regular. the salt and sweet while good, can't beat the classic IMHO. It is also sweet with a slight salt undertone, smooth, creamy and rich--even thought it just uses pistachios, brown sugar, and water. The owner was very nice and informative. One of many gelato places that I visited during my brief stay in Florence, but this one was one of the top ones that I tried. There were classic flavors as well as some more unique ones. I picked one from each for my small cone and enjoyed both (coffee and a new flavor that I can't recall except for the fact that I ate it all). This is the BEST gelato I have had in Rome or Florence, and I have sampled more then my fair share. It's even better than the one I liked best in Rome.
