I left with nothing but vibes, a free Sprite, and a new smoking habit. Every spin felt like destiny. I was one totem away from greatness--every. single. time. And yet? The totems said "nah." But did I walk away? Of course not. I chased that win like it owed me rent and emotional closure. I lost all $5,000 in about... two hours. Somewhere between the fourth bonus round fake-out and me fist-bumping a slot machine, someone outside handed me a cigarette. I'd never smoked in my life. I lit it with a shaky hand, took one drag... and felt peace. Chaos, but peace. I haven't stopped since. Now I'm broke, slightly wheezy, and spiritually bonded to a totem named "Big Luck." But the lights were glowing, the music was thumping, and I was clapping like I just saw Beyoncé in Vegas. I even cried. The staff handed me napkins and didn't say a word. Just a gentle nod. Respect. Would I do it again? Yes. I already booked a room for next weekend. 5 stars. I left my dignity at the blackjack table and found myself outside, puffin' like a noir movie character. Never felt more alive.

Oh my where do I even begin? Julie is the reason my wedding was everything I hoped it to be. My now…read morehusband and I walked into the venue last July in awe of this hidden treasure on Dickson street already prepared to book just based on the aesthetic! But then we got to meet Julie and immediately asked where we needed to sign. Everyone in this world needs a Julie (but let's be real, we don't deserve one). From the moment we signed our date (Oct 23, 2021) Julie became our right hand lady. She was there to help us plan as much or as little as we needed assistance with. She showed us all of the amazing decor pieces included with the venue (don't worry about buying table clothes, vases, table markers, signs, ANYTHING. Julie has it ready for use!). All costs were upfront (and let's be real, way below the CRAZY wedding costs were all used to). The week of the wedding Julie acted like we were the only couple she was working with (despite having three weddings before us that week!). She called our vendors, confirmed all drop off times (and even put a few grumpy people in their place). No stress on this bride and groom! When we arrived Saturday morning everything was already set up. The tables, ceremony chairs, everything! Julie was also ready to get the floral arrangements arranged herself before I asked to out of excitement. Every hour or so she checked in on us to make sure we were okay and didn't need anything. When it was time to get down to business (aka photos and guests arriving) it was like Julie was in 5 places at once. She was handling it all! When we had a person who was not invited show up and try to make a scene, Julie was there ready to fight (well not actually fight, but make sure they didn't take one step into the venue). So on top of a wedding planner, coordinator, best friend and venue owner you also are getting a body guard! The whole ceremony and reception was perfect. Julie made sure everything stayed on track and was just a joy every second. When it was time to wrap it all up she gave us (bride and groom) some togo boxes and sent us off on our way (after LOTS of hugs). I miss the flowers and my pretty dress from that day, but I miss Julie the most. I can't image doing that day over without her. So run now to Dickson Street and book any event you can think of at The Garden Room. You will have the best day and night of your life and work with the most amazing person to exist. I wish I could rate The Garden Room 10,000/5 stars. It was such a magical experience.

We were planning a wedding on a less than 6 month timeline and considered many venues around town…read more I'll be honest, I have lived in the area for over 10 years, and was not aware of the Garden Room. When I contacted them initially, they were quick with providing all the information needed to assist in a decision even before meeting with them - availability, accommodations, and pricing of everything from facility to catering. I found others to not be quite as forthcoming with that in advance of the meeting. When we met for the first time, I could see the potential of the beautiful venue, even though we were in the dead of winter. They were very thorough in asking about our vision for the day and providing suggestions. They have a crazy amount of decor available at no additional cost, all the table centers, candles, all types of candle holders and glass items, easels, etc. that takes a great deal of worry and cost out of decorating. They offer many option for linens at a reasonable fee, and have beautiful dishes, serving pieces, etc. for your use. The catering options were very extensive and reasonably priced, compared to other locals. They were super flexible in allowing you to select from all the different items, and were good to offer up suggestions. We had heard from others that the food was always excellent, and when we showed up for a tasting nothing disappointed! Everything tasted fresh and homemade. That sealed the deal for us and we put down a 50% deposit for the venue. In the lead-up to the wedding, we met a few times, and they were gracious about us "popping in" to the venue in the afternoon hours to take a look at things for our planning. We finalized the menu a few weeks out and head count 2 weeks before. Julie provided a super detailed timeline to ensure every detail was covered, down to what we preferred to drink that day so that the staff could keep us in beverages. No bride should have to fetch her own drink! The day of our wedding went off perfectly. We had secured the office as a bridal suite/lounge early in the day and had decorating hours in the morning. We had designated parking spots for all our vendors and later for wedding party and family. The location allowed close by lunch options and the Chancellor hotel was our guests' hotel. It rained from 1:30 pm to almost 5, and I kept my cool, as we had planned for the afternoon showers and everything was managed. When the rain passed, the staff quickly had everything dried off and ready for our first pictures at 530 pm. Julie ensured everything for our ceremony and reception went perfectly as scripted, down to managing the background music herself! We had decided to have an intimate dinner in the bridal suite while our guests enjoyed the buffet and it was perfect, to sit down to beautifully prepared plates and have a few minutes of quiet reflection and time together before we party!! All the guests were very complementary of the food - spinach/artichoke dip, beautiful mixed green salad, mini muffulettas, smoked pork tenderloin with fresh yeast rolls and horseradish sauce, bacon wrapped shrimp, new potato rounds with ricotta and parmesan and fruit salad. The entire reception was managed beautifully. The Garden Room in a beautiful venue for any event. But what made it extraordinary was Julie and her staff. Their engagement from the very beginning, attention to every detail, and quality of product and service provided was really so much more than I expected. They didn't just provide a place, they helped us host the perfect wedding and reception. I highly recommend the Garden Room for your party or event.

Worth a stop if you are getting married here, attending a wedding here, or are already in the area…read more I would not drive out of my way like some of the angry people who one-starred this spot, but to each their own. What it is - A beautiful chapel in the mountains of Arkansas. One man's dream that he almost didn't complete. Now it is a beautiful example of his dream fulfilled and a great spot for your wedding ceremony. I didn't get married here, but my introduction to this chapel was a wedding 25 years ago, where I was the best man. I came back over the holiday with my kids. We arrived, and there was a sign notifying us that a ceremony was going on, so we came back on a different day. It was just as beautiful as I remembered. It is truly a site to behold. What it isn't - Remember when I said a ceremony was going on when we first arrived? This is a place where people get married. If you were getting married and some yahoo from Louisiana showed up with his two kids dressed casually, you wouldn't particularly like it. So don't drive from far away and definitely don't try to interrupt someone's wedding.

Options for autumn when Canada was "closed" (2 of 2)…read more - - - - - You may not know Thorncrown Chapel by its name, but you've most likely seen photos of it. It's a major example of "less is more" and "good things come in small packages." Thorncrown Chapel is a latticed timber structure - a nondenominational chapel that is Christian in its inspiration - sitting in the hilly, wooded terrain just outside of bohemian Eureka Springs, Arkansas. You will have to look for its small roadway from the highway to visit it. To say that it might resemble a popsicle stick model would be reductionist, but there is this affect in the way it looks. The difference is that the chapel is all about carefully selected, shaped, and connected wood members that make it a significant place in the world of American architecture. It was designed by the states's native son E. Fay Jones. He was the recipient of numerous awards, as is Thorncrown Chapel. The chapel is enclosed in glass. This brings in and keeps out the surroundings and elements, respectively. Sitting in here is a very serene experience. One could worship if they want - its scheme is a Christian one - or could just savor the silence. However, there is soothing instrumental music playing in the background that could intersect with today's new age variety. I thought that was humorous. They do not charge an entrance fee. They didn't when I visited. However, they do ask for donations and, if you visited, you should make a donation. There was a person on hand to answer questions. There might be events here, causing the chapel to open and close for short periods. One typical event might be a wedding. Closer to the entrance and away from the chapel is an office that tends to such affairs. Whether to visit Thorncrown Chapel garners the answer, "It depends." It is at the northwestern border of the state, just outside of Eureka Springs and below the Missouri border. However, it is far from Little Rock and Hot Springs, though not absurdly far from Fayetteville, home of the University of Arkansas. You will inevitably combine your visit with a visit to Eureka Springs. Eureka Springs is an artsy community shoehorned into a hilly mountain town that has restaurants, coffeehouses, gift shops, and the like ... and most likely garden variety stoners who work at these places. Think Nevada City, CA, Sedona, AZ, Galena, IL, Saratoga Springs, NY, and similar granolafied towns thrown into the middle of rural (and more conservative) America. I got derailed discussing Eureka Springs and its hippie vibe. If, to you, the distance is reasonable and doable, do visit Thorncrown Chapel. It's an interesting and unique mix of contextual, transparent, simple, and yet complex.
