I also understand the smaller the business, the more local feel - I get it. I believe in supporting small businesses. I hope this place stays around for awhile but in all honesty I don't see it being open in a year. I've been wrong before, so I hope I'm proven wrong! I'm just gonna say you will not get the average record store feel with this one - which is sometimes a good thing. There was not very much of a selection. I was all excited to check out this place and when I finally visited, I was disappointed. It was like I stepped into one small near-empty room. I was impressed with how "new" it was with freshly-coated paint and all (this is in a really old downtown Alton building). But again, the room was very small, probably not much bigger than your bathroom at home. The owner's father was sitting there, and he was very friendly and I asked him a few questions. The answers were all the same - everything was limited and local. That's the one thing that I found cool is that the owner, Becca Peterson, is focused on selling vinyl and shirts from local bands. How cool is that? But that's pretty much where it all ends. I was just not that comfortable browsing while having the guy watch every move (like I was gonna do anything, right?). There wasn't even any music playing when I was there. Every record store should have something blasting from their old-school speakers! Just saying. If there is a vinyl record you want, there is a sheet available for you to write down what you want - and they will order it. But most people like me are better off getting them online like Amazon, Discogs and plenty of others.

While waiting in line my wife was talking to me and said she always wants to branch out with music, someone behind the counter interceded with something along the lines of "yeah but it's hard when Laufey is putting out the same album and you have to keep buying it". (I had picked up the Laufey album, but the statement was definately aimed at my wife, sorry I'm too basic) it came across weird, judgy, and offputting, and soiled the experience. I understand that niche interests like records can sometimes facilitate pretentiousness, but dang, next time I want to pay an above average price for some girly pop bossa nova music I'll find another record store.

A horrible record store. Definitely. Make sure you keep your receipt. Although if you get a record…read morethere from a family member as a gift for your birthday, you wouldn't have a receipt now, would you? They don't even do store credit. My son got a record from there. Brand new sealed, supposedly. And it was not the group that it said it was on the record. It was a totally different genre, wrong record. Misprint, horrible. The worker wouldn't even play the miss labeled record. If that's any indication, the rest of their records are probably not legitimate. **Update, for clarification. My autistic son went into this record store with his uncle and stepdad. His uncle provided a screenshot of his private secure banking website. To prove that records were bought on a specific day. A banking statement shows that on a specific day, we bought records from a store called trusty cords. unless they're selling pies in there or orthotic shoes.. haha. chances are , ya bought a vinyl record. because that's mainly what they sell there. My son has a photo of all his records, he took it to show his friends. If we zoom in, we can see that it came from trusty cords. As shown on a very poorly, but self made store tag. And this is all in a photograph with the same date and timestamp, that matches the secure bank information that shows proof that the record in the photo, matches the Fake record that was bought in the store that day. I mean, again, receipts are amazing, But not when it's a gift. and we have done more than enough to prove that it came from there.. Store credit isn't even offered for such an inconvenience for a Fake Scam record. Further proof that this store is scamming customers by selling mismarked records on purpose. No worries I have reported this fake record scam to the BBB. Everyone have a blessed day. Shop local, shop small, shop Anywhere else.

The space is really big and packed with records, DVDs, CDs, you name it. Everything is labeled pretty well but it can definitely feel overwhelming just because of how much there is. The good news is the staff is super friendly and easy to approach, so don't hesitate to ask them for help or something specific. I was also surprised by how much international stuff they carry. They even had a recent Kpop album from a group I like and I did not expect them to have it in stock. Overall just a really fun place to come to with friends, flip through some records, and maybe find something you weren't expecting. Would go back!

Still a great location with all the other shops around. I will definitely return as my kids are into vinyl records now and would like a few of their own.

I also wish I would have read these other reviews before ordering, or I never would have done business with them. Trying to get a hold of this company at any point during the process was ridiculous. I had to call over and over, and I'd be put on hold for 5 minutes and no one would ever answer. If I left a message, it would be returned a day or 2 later. This should have been my first red flag- when a company is hard to get a hold of, that's never a good thing. When I was finally called to set up my installation, it was scheduled for a Friday, and "maybe a couple hours on Saturday" for my Lifeproof vinyl. I was told someone would call me about arrival time between 8 and 10. No one called. When the installers arrived, I was laughed at when I mentioned this being a one-day job, and was told it would be several days, and then threatened not to start the project if I didn't want them to. I had taken off work, unhooked all my appliances, and emptied an entire house for this work to be done in a day. What other option did I have but to let them start? Halfway through the day I received a phone call from Superior to set up the installation- while the installers were at my house. This is the kind of communication and records this company keeps. The workers who stayed to do the work were nice, but language was a barrier. In our front entry, the installers put the new flooring over rotted/soft subfloors. I asked them the next day after I noticed it and they told me I would turn this into a 5 day project if I wanted it fixed. I said I don't care, it should have been done right. (Hardwood flooring was removed, we had no idea we had that issue until it was already covered up.) It was corrected, and did require removal of all the flooring they had done as I was lead to believe. There are also several spots where my walls and cabinets were damaged while removing the existing flooring. In spots where the flooring comes up to our cabinets there is a gap because it wasn't measured/cut correctly. (Shown in picture.) The entire project took 4 full days, including a Saturday. This completely ruined our weekend plans, left our house in shambles while we have a small baby, I had to take off an additional 2 days, and nothing was done about it. I would have never let the installer start on a Friday if I knew it was going to take this long. I have called multiple times to speak with a manager and I get the run around no one ever calls me back. This is not someone I would ever do business with again, and Home Depot should be ashamed of contracting this company.

Great collection of books!…read more Will return again when I have more time to browse and find treasures.

Ever be of two minds about a place…read more One, you really want to like them, but then Two... knowing they're usually NOTHING like what their store title promises you? The second part is my problem with "Half Priced Books". (At least the one just off of 170. I swear I've been to their other location but remember absolutely zilch about them overall (not a good sign for writing reviews, I know.)). I've already seen other reviews who have pointed out "DO NOT SELL YOUR BOOKS" here.. and I understand every one of those reviewers. I overheard some offers for some -standard- books and .. I get making money and reselling, but no, this deal sounded like highway robbery. Not sounding too good so far, huh? or maybe I'm just a crotchety old man who hates seeing good books get ignored just cause they're not in our "market" today. Now: I will say this.. i'm a board game and tabletop roleplaying game fanatic (particularly Palladium books), and this is one of the FEW places that ever have what I'm looking for in my roleplaying Genre. (Yes, I will buy used books to complete my collection). But let's get back to the complaints: (usually I'm a lot nicer in my reviews, but when you blow it this badly...) Until not too long ago, when i picked up a min-book i needed in which the cover price was $19.95, and someone had to have brought it in and sold it to HPB, and _maybe_ got A buck or 2 for it. HPB Sticker price: $35!!!!! Yes, read that again folks... A "half price" book shop, charging DOUBLE what the original publisher (who was still publishing the book in question, was NOT out of stock, and could be found on their webpage for cover price + s/h). So which is the lie? The price or the name of the shop? Basically a store that lies to sell? 0 Stars... TOTAL. But I will say there are two things that are going in HPB's favor: There are some books there for reasonable prices (I'm an Asimov. Clarke, Heinlein fanatic (basically SciFi) and Sherlock Holmes and Agatha Christie. And I finally found a couple of copies of the later Foundation series I'd been hunting for, so I had to get them while the getting was good. And then board games: again next to roleplaying games I'm a board game nut! And there are more than a few good used games there, for instance I'm a Trivial Pursuit collector (a small collection, but a collection), and I cannot see putting a near RETAIL price on a board game that's shows itself to be 45 years old, and while in good shape, the container was showing its age. As for DVDs/Vinyl - Plain and simple, (while it's nice to see Vinyl for sale), if they have something you're looking for, again there's a problem in either the name of the store or their selling policy, because everything felt "near retail". (although I guess you can say they're not "Half Price Books & Music".) Take a better chance at a regular or used record store, for the music lovers of the world. So basically as I said at the beginning: Half Priced Books Is a place that I REALLY want to like them (and do have a couple of good points, (softback books and board games) but how do you give a positive review to a store that completely ignores their own name of their store? Sorry HPB I get the point, but 1 star is all I can bring myself to give you this time around and that's because I usually err on the side of generosity. (Probably because I'm still miffed about the "twice the cover price" book I needed?)

The record store portion of the business featured a very good selection of alphabetically- sorted used rock vinyl, including many import pressings ... as well as a few new LPs (including recent RSD releases). Budget-priced discs were in crates below and behind the primary inventory. They also had some jazz, blues, folk/country, and a few classical records. They even had two different releases by my favorite 60's band, Moby Grape!! While the records alone would have brought me back to this store, fully half of their location is dedicated to high-end hi-fi equipment: turntabless, CD players, amp, speakers, etc. I have been wanted to rebuild my home audio for over 30 years ... but after several major geographic relocations, I no longer knew where to start. Well folks, this is it! Mike, the owner, is extremely knowledgable in all matters stereo - and will demo different set-ups at your request. Very high end, audiophile equipment. There's more stuff to explore, but please trust me, it's a great store. The good old days for a record collector like me. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
