Our trips to Trempealeau are never complete until we've stopped in to the cafe for breakfast. Service is so fast and the food is always delicious. I'm a big fan of the pancakes, they're always so perfect and buttery and filling. It looks small but there's plenty of seating inside. There are both booths and tables. Food was fine - we were excited for the Raspberry Cheesecake French Toast but it was quite soggy and somehow bland. There were a few vegetarian options on the menu and they serve breakfast all day. Started off with a French Toast and Eggs Benedict. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal. The "Day Tripper*" made me refer this place to two more people just for breakfast.the spinach and feta wrap is also a good order which is worth it for a try in wraps section. What a gem this cafe is! Super close to Perrot State Park where we were camping. Delicious food, quick and friendly service, a nice patio with picnic tables, and one of the best Reuben sandwiches I've ever had with thick sliced corned beef and the perfect proportions of all ingredients. I highly enjoyed stopping into the River Cafe for breakfast. The portions are huge and delicious. They make fresh, homemade biscuits and gravy that were so wonderfully flavorful. The staff is very friendly and attentive. We are from the Twin Cities and our waitress gave us directions and advise for all over town. We got so much food and barely spent any money. We were visiting Winona and decided to make the 20 minute drive to the River Café. It was the best decision we could've made. The place was buzzing on a Sunday morning and the food could not have been better. The spinach feta omelette was fresh and delicious. This is a great place to go out for breakfast if you're going camping or visiting Perrot State Park. It's a great little diner that has a larger variety of the usual breakfast fare. I had the traditional English breakfast complete with beans and tomatoes and it was delicious. Service was very fast and friendly. I will definitely be back next time I'm in the area. read more

This was a pleasant surprise for breakfast. The food is delicious and prepared with care. The veggie omelette was exquisite. Besides the usual veggies, cut small for every bite, there were the occasional black olive pieces that gave a terrific zing to the omelette. My husband felt that the biscuits and gravy were some of the best he has ever tasted and he frequently gets biscuits and gravy when we eat breakfast out. Finally, we finished our breakfast with a piece of homemade apple pie. . So good! We planned to take it with us but the temptation was too great and I'm so glad we shared it with our coffee. When did you last enjoy a hearty breakfast in a small town cafe? Yesterday my wife and I did just that at River Cafe. This is a good breakfast place up the hill from the Mississippi River. Family members recommended the biscuits and gravy with homemade sausage gravy. Now I know why. The gravy is flavorful with pieces of sausage throughout. The biscuits hold up to the gravy. My wife described it as "stick to your ribs" food. River Cafe has the best things about a small town cafe -- good food with friendly, attentive service -- on The Great River Road just up the hill from the mighty Mississippi River. read more

I have been camping at Perrot State Park for the past 5 nights. Today I had my second meal away from camp. It rained most of the night last night an while I stayed dry, I wanted some "comfort" food for breakfast. I thought I would try the River Cafe and boy am I glad I did. The waitress Kelly was prompt, helpful and got my order to me as soon as it was ready. The owner Randy is the cook and he handles the entire kitchen which you can see from the dining area. He is a master short order cook. I ordered Coffee a Denver Omelet, American Fried Potatoes and Rye Toast. The coffee is better than your typical small town cafe. The omelet was filled with fresh ingredients and cooked just right. The potatoes are made with thinly sliced red potatoes with just the right amount of browning for flavor and texture. The toast was made from one o about 4 varieties of bread available and still crisp when it arrived at the table. I am so glad I made the trip down here from the park. The next time here will include a slice of one of the home made pies or baked goods. I can't wait. I did return for some pie and coffee later. The coffee was commented on previously. The pie was a variety I had never had before; Sour Cream Apple. It was fantastic. Crisp crust, great flavor and not as sweet as many sour cream pies I have had at other places. read more
