2021 -There is nothing more thrilling that adds to the excitement of an escape room than when it's immersive and the props are out of this world! You've heard it before in their reviews, truly movie set rooms! It's nice when an escape room has the real estate to go big! I mean literally and figuratively! Even the facade of the establishment sets off a curious vibe beckoning you to come inside to see what adventure awaits. Tomb ruins was our choice of adventure. We were led by our extraordinary game master who greeted us by surprise while we were snapping photos in the lobby. Whisked away down a dark corridor and summoned with such energy to help restore the RaVen among the Egyptian ruins our guide led us to a huge excavation tent. An hour to solve the mystery, we unfortunately failed our mission, but we had a good time doing so but we were disappointed in our attempt. This room definitely requires at least three people which we had. 2022- We returned in quest to find the 1000th wish so Balazar, a dedicated genie wasn't doomed to work another 500 years of granting needy wishes. ;-) It looks like Balazar Bolderdash needs better organization skills. Just saying. Actually, once you enter the world of the magic lamps, you will find out that not all wishes are granted or are they?? Since we failed the Tomb Ruins mission last year, we decided we needed to take it down a notch to be successful. So, we dropped to an intermediate level this time versus advanced. Honestly, we kind of struggled, but we prevailed with the assistance of our Magi with two minutes to spare. I can't say this enough, but Gnome and Raven, the sister company of Ravenchase and now the Reveler are phenomenal and excel at what they do at all three companies. But I have to say, Gnome and Raven is outshining their older sister. No details are spared in these elaborate immersive rooms. From the moment you step into your "room" you enter a time machine and are transported into the world in which you chose to set free or find the object at task. Huge accolades to the employees, they really commit to character. The young lady who greeted us upon entering the establishment was friendly. She brought a huge smile to my face and I wanted to laugh so bad. She did an exceptional job of switching into character and staying in character as our Magi. High fives! This escape room company is superb and is truly my top fave, even if I do have to take the 1.5 hour trek out. They raise the bar for all escape rooms, immersive and in puzzle strength. So much fun, we felt like Indiana Jones on a real mission! The staff really made us feel at home. The game master gave us a quick rundown and turned us loose. We immediately felt like we were on a quest to find and release the Raven to its rightful place! You really had to be on every puzzle from the get go!! There was no time to spare! Plenty of puzzles to solve from room to room. It's definitely a room for three or more people because some moves require at least 3 people!! I've done two rooms here and the experience is nothing short of magical. It always feels like you are walking onto a movie set! The decor is so elaborate and the way the rooms are laid out they seem to utilize the space brilliantly! Located at Stony point mall, it looks intriguing from the outside and from the moment you step inside you are instantly transported to another world, surrounded by characters who are there to guide you through your journey! What also great is that you can choose your level so that the room suits your needs from the novice to the well seasoned. Now I'm no newbie to the escape room genre but advance is pretty difficult... if you are not solving most puzzles within 5 minutes there is a good chance you will not make it out! Gnome and Raven is the crème de la crème of escape rooms! We have come in on 2 occasions with 4 people (2 couples) and have been blown away each time. For 4 of us, it's about $37.50 per person, but it's worth every penny. Rooms are creative, impeccably decorated and staged, entertaining, and really transformative. Their staff is incredibly dedicated to their roles (costumes included!) and are very kind and funny as well. We were entertained, challenged, and we're very happy we spent our money and time here. We have been to several all over Virginia, and this is by far my favorite place. I would highly recommend to anyone who thinks they'd enjoy an Escape room! read more

Worst experience with a business ever. They don't know how to operate a business. I booked an escape room, and the website let me add options for birthday cake, and drinks, even asked the name of the birthday kid. After booking, I emailed the venue to double check and a rep told me, yes you have extra time, vanilla cake. When we arrived, I was told "I'm sorry, we don't have a cake available for you." No drinks. When I emailed the rep to express my dissatisfaction, she apologized for not checking the booking, because I hadn't selected a birthday package, but chose a regular escape room time with birthday options for cake, drinks, etc. (In other words, I had selected a combo that didn't match.) I pointed out that it seemed she was blaming the customer for THEIR website allowing me to book one event but leading me through questions for a another and offering options, which, again, were confirmed by an actual person. She apologized for not having an "extra cake" to offer me. After expressing my frustration that she was blaming the customer for a fault of theirs, and expressing no desire for them to make it right, she gave me a modest partial refund. I am confounded as to how this venue is still able to keep its doors open. read more

People literally come to escape rooms to bond, solve a few puzzles and have fun. Well Gnome & Raven manages to check all of "let's have fun boxes" and kicks it up a notch. First of all we have to take about the ambiance- I LOVE it. Its warm, and inviting yet mysterious and wander lusty all at the same time! Oh and the game master needs to be nominated for an Oscar because homeboy is all the way committed. We did the Wizards Castle room and our Game Master was dressed up as a Wizard! What a great spot! We did the Tomb Ruins adventure and it was not only really fun, but the set was great, and there was a good variety of puzzle types to keep us busy. We were a group of seasoned escape room players and this one had puzzles and clues we haven't seen before in other escape rooms! The staff is also super friendly, and keep things interesting by playing a "role" as your guide (as opposed to most places where they kind of just read a script or play a video and let you in the room). Hands down the best escape room experience I have been to. The experience I had was very elaborate with tons of moving parts and 4-5 rooms within my one escape room. The guide is dressed up in theme with whatever room you booked and they are very helpful. There was a decent amount of themes I could choose from when booking. I can't wait to come back and do another one. If you do them all, you get a little prize. What I liked about this company was that you could choose the difficulty level for the room you booked, so depending on the experience level of your group you could change the room-solvability. There were packages you could buy for the experience, like if you wanted a birthday cake. For a group of 6, it was about $180, so about $30 a person. It is a bit on the pricy side but worth it. The establishment is in a mall, it is not a free standing building. Overall, a great experience and would 100% do again. read more

Wow! I've tried different escape rooms and Gnome & Raven is the best! Gnome & Raven gave me a complete escape room experience. Even game masters wore costumes and mimicked accents to match the themes. For example, my room, the Shipwreck, had a game master who wore a pirate hat and had a pirate accent. The rooms were very well designed, with fine details. Shipwreck room had sand on the floor to give the beachy feeling. Solving one puzzle unlocked a new room and led to other clues to "escape" the final room. As a group of 7 adults, we very much enjoyed our experience. The rooms were challenging enough to get every one of us engaged. I will definitely come back to try other rooms. I cannot wait to see how the other rooms look like. Went with a group of 7 last night to the "Shipwrecked" escape room! What a blast. The puzzles were intriguing, elaborate, and gorgeously designed. They transported us to a delightful high-seas adventure; we seriously felt like we were on a movie set. Each puzzle led to unpredictable and delightful surprises - which is something I cherish as I can often predict where narratives go. I loved the humor, especially a certain diary. Our experienced pirate guide had the best energy, pirate hat, and was very helpful when we were more 'arrr?' than 'yarrr!'. Just know that I have done two of these rooms and I am no stranger to Escape Rooms. No lie, I have been to every escape room in Richmond. This is the best. Bar NONE. The only other one that holds a candle to it is Escape Room RVA on Three Chopt that is owned by the same people, so it makes sense. Anyway, back to Gnome and Raven. When you book your experience, you can choose the level of difficulty. It's also family friendly and they have kid birthday parties and kid friendly rooms. I LOVE that! We had a great experience today for my 9-year-old's birthday. We chose the Tomb Ruins beginner level. There were more than enough things to look at and puzzles to solve to allow every kid a chance to shine. The kids were excited and engaged for the whole experience, including two six-year-olds who were along for the ride. I love how this activity encourages teamwork and creativity. It was a safe space for them to run around, and the set is loaded with fun details. The host was wonderful, setting up a fun premise and giving just the right amount of guidance when the kids got a little sidetracked. We got the birthday package and it made everything so easy- they provided the cake, drinks, plates, napkins, and serving tools, so all we needed to do was show up and have fun. We brought in pizza from Nino's (also in the Stony Point Fashion Park), and G&R gave us plates for that, too! Several of the kids informed us that they intend to come back for their birthdays. They are both difficult enough, and laid out well enough that even if you are a room veteran some of them will have you escaping only with minutes to spare. We took our son to Gnome & Raven for his 10th Birthday Party with 5 other boys and they had a BLAST!!! The entire staff was FANTASTIC and the rooms were REALLY COOL!!! My wife and I do Break Out Rooms often and we were highly impressed with the detail and aesthetics of the room. We did the "Wizard's Castle". The boys did a great job figuring out several clues on their own with a little help from my wife and I and a hint or two from the "Wizard's Apprentice". My wife and I will DEFIANTLY go back and try the rest of the rooms. I would HIGHLY recommend the rooms for any and everyone. The room we did may be a bit easier for more experienced Break Out experts, but the experience and immersion is one of the best!!! I've done multiple escape rooms and personally this was the worse one. The puzzles were majority theater props. The escape room didn't lead you well naturally - I suspect you definitely need help from the helper but I like the rooms to be doable with no or minimal help. Things seemed very linear and more independent than previous escape rooms I've done. I think some puzzles may require the helper pressing a button as I couldn't see how it would work naturally (I didn't see any magnets or things that could trigger things)- I dislike magic in escape rooms. read more

Simply yet magically - *the* best place to have a party for your child. Our party (ages 9-11) loved the puzzles and the interaction with the top rate set design (we did the Wizard room). I loved hearing them all work together, laugh together, and cheer together every step of the way.
