Our family of 5 adults played Algernon's Shop of Magical Goods as part of a belated Father's Day outing. The room has a rated difficulty of 6/10 and we found it challenging, but the gamemaster was very helpful when we asked for hints, and we were able to escape with about 15 minutes remaining. The room design is very well done. It is immersive with many details, twists and turns, and surprises. We had a great time! Other things we liked: convenient location, lots of free parking, and a restaurant in the same shopping center where we could have brunch before our game. read more

My group barely escaped from the Shadow of Cthulhu, with just 3 minutes to spare, after solving a challenging series of puzzles that were much more creative and complex than other breakout rooms. Our game master gave us a hint on request to get us unstuck and redirected us when we went off-track, without ever subtracting from the difficulty. Really cool themed rooms. We did the magician/ wizard themed one. The puzzles were all pretty cool and clever riddles. I won't spoil anything so I can't say tooo much but it was fun! I would say though this place isn't handicap accessible. There were thin, dark stairs right after you walk in the door and the room also had some stairs inside it you had to basically crawl through. I'd call ahead to ask about wheelchair access if you need it, there may be another entrance or rooms that are flat enough for a chair. If you use a cane/ other mobility aid I'd also ask because those stairs were a bit much for someone who needs mobility aids. I personally don't but I'm always in the look out because my brother uses a heavy electric wheelchair and traveling with that thing can be difficult if buildings aren't made properly. The front door is also hard to find. It's in the back of the parking lot behind the shopping center, but from there it's a big red wall if I remember right so it's easier to spot once you're back there. Not a plus or a minus per se, just wanted the people to know so you can find it easier! read more

I have been to escape room RVA three times now and in my opinion, they definitely have the most creative rooms. Frequently, their rooms feature multiple doors to go through and walk into new rooms with new aspects of the game. I just love how creative they get, the decor is always on point and the stories are super fun. Now they even have unlimited hints which is really helpful and takes some of the stress out. MOST. FUN. EVER! I have been wanting to do an escape room forever and finally got 3 others to do with me and coordinated our schedules to do "Vanity." This was the most fun I've had in a very long time. Not exaggerating in the least. The "puzzles" were very clever and well thought-out, and they were just the right number of them and degree of difficulty to be challenging, but not impossible to solve. We escaped with either 6 or 8 minutes to spare. Great, enthusiastic staff and even free ice cream and water before you get started! This was the first of what will be one escape room adventure after another. My new favorite hobby! We're already trying to coordinate our schedules for the next one. Maybe tomorrow! read more

We are a couple of senior citizens who have tried a couple of escape rooms in the past without success. Ren was our instructor for this room experience and he was the best. He didn't let us struggle long before he gave us a hint. He made it one of our best vacation highlights. I would come back to Virginia just to try again as long as we could work with Ren. The staff was super friendly and very helpful. Loved the decor and the lounge with complimentary drinks and popsicles. Multiple puzzles to solve simultaneously works great to keep everyone in the group engaged. Only negative is it is hard to get a person to answer the phone, and there is a long message before the phone connects, so if you're calling repeatedly, you have to keep listening to the same message. My family went for the "Escape from Cthulhu" room last year and had a spectacular time. The set was very well built and immersive, the puzzles were enjoyably challenging, and the staff obviously enjoys what they do. We went back this year for "Trials of Valhalla" and had a great time again. I was finally able to do my first ever Escape Room this past weekend, and it was probably one of the best times I have ever had. My friends and I did the Vampire room, which is a competition room against the Unicorns. I don't want to say too much about the room and risk giving away any of the secrets, but I can say a good time was had by all. I was amazed by how everything meant something. You couldn't overlook any small detail. I'm glad we had some veterans in the room, otherwise we would have been totally lost! Its really fun that the groups has to dance for clues, and I believe you get to ask three times. They will also sometimes take pity on you, which they did for us a few times. I bet the staff has a great time watching you try to solve each puzzle. Once a clue would be given, we would have such an "DUH" moment! We made it out with 7 minutes to spare and beat the Unicorns, so it was a huge success in my eyes. I found myself wanted to go back right away! The cost is $25 per person, and you have an hour to solve the room, so overall it may be a little bit pricey. I think there are Groupons, so I'll be keeping an eye out for those! And even without, I would go back tomorrow if I could. Thanks for a great and original time!! read more

We had such a wonderful time during our visit for my son's 12th birthday party. As we were waiting to go to our room, the kids were talking, and it was apparent that one of the kids was very nervous. One of the hosts pulled me aside and noted that the room we had booked was actually quite scary (CTHULHU). He said that they had another room available at the same time that was a little bit less scary (ALGERNON) and offered to switch us to manage the nervousness. The kids had a great time with the puzzles while still experiencing a bit of a scare factor that my son wanted. Absolutely superb escape room, and easily better than what I've done before! Escape Room RVA is a company running a series of escape rooms. There are a number to try, some harder than others, but all seem to support at least a decent-sized group. The price is remarkably cheap, especially in comparison to escape rooms in Washington, D.C. The escape rooms here are clever and fun without feeling unfair. Rather than relying on time-consuming or simply over-complicated number puzzles (which a lot of other escape rooms rely on), the puzzles here are fair but impressively difficult. Without disclosing too much, many relied on thinking outside-of-the-box, attention to detail, and team organization. I can't recommend this place enough, especially if you're looking for some unusual fun! read more

Everything felt like a logical progression and the right level of difficulty to be challenging but still make it out with a few minutes to spare. To get acclimated with my new co workers, our team went on a day outing to the Escape Room RVA. I was apprehensive due to being a novice. I didn't want to be scared by a homicidal clown or confined to a hostel room for an hour. All my fears were put to rest and I actually had an awesome experience! The room my team chose was Judgement at the Pearly Gates. We had an hour to hide our sins before St. Peter arrived back from happy hour to judge us. The clues, puzzles, riddles, tricks and traps really through us for a loop. We really had to work as a team to put all the pieces of this kooky puzzle together to try to get to heaven. I won't give anything away but there are tons of twists in this room. I personally had the best time at the Escape Room RVA. It definitely made my co workers and I bond in a completely different manner. My boyfriend loves puzzles and resolving mysteries. I want to come back with him and try a different room, of course no scary clowns allowed! read more

Absolutely amazing! I wondered into this escape venue with my partner for her birthday. We wanted to do something we had never tried before. I booked the vanity room and we were thrown in with a small group of 3 enthusiasts. Let me tell you, as first timers, if we didn't have that group, there's no way we would have known what to do or what to look for! We are thankful for those guys! We go out with about 30 seconds left on the clock. Since the vanity room we have done about 8 other rooms associated with Ravenchase Adventures, in the Arlington and Herndon locations. All are so wonderfully decorated, the clues work seemlessly within the rooms, the themes are wonderful and the staff is amazing. The day after Vanity we played Cake or Death with another group of 6 and saw the value of team work. Our groups were polar opposite from amazing team work to no team structure. If you are partnered with another group, you can not win without it. We didn't win Cake or Death and to date, that's the only room we haven't beaten out of 15 so far. We will be back! How could anyone give Escape Room RVA anything other than 5 stars? Like, were we at the same place? I hosted a Yelp Elite Event here back in June and have been plotting my return ever since. My boyfriend helped me out at the event and he fell in love with the concept as well. So when it came time to figure out his birthday weekend festivities, Escape Room was at the top of the priority list. He bought out the room (The Cursed Crypt) and filled it with our closest friends and family. We. Had. A. Ball! This room was really difficult, but super fun. We escaped from the room with about 7 minutes to spare! Josh (the owner) made sure he came in to check on us every 15 min or so and helped us out when we needed it. We did get stuck on a couple of things, but once we got clues it became an "OMG WHY DIDN'T WE THINK OF THAT" situation. Speaking of Josh, he is a rockstar and the rest of the staff is phenomenal! It's hard to write a review without giving away specific details about the room. You wouldn't want me to do that because it would take away the fun! If you love adventuring with your friends, getting your Scooby Doo on, cracking codes, and dominating clues, then you've come to the right place. I cant even describe too much because I don't want to give anything away but what I will say is that you need to make sure to pay attention to whats in the waiting area, information is in there that you will definitely need. We chose to do The Matrix Room(s)... 18% success rate and LAAAWD I don't see how someone came up with some of the puzzles, had to be a mad genius. All the rooms were amazing. The staff was super nice and helpful, they seemed to really enjoy their jobs. Make sure you are well rested before you come here. You cant walk in half-assed. I've been here twice, and I have to say it is probably the most one-of-a-kind fun you can have in Richmond. First of all, great staff make a great business. I have been impressed by how polite and humorous all their employees are, not to mention informative. Ash and Danny were particularly nice and made for a nice experience here. The two rooms I've done here were the Steampunk room and the Crypt room. I don't want to give anything away, though suffice it to say that the challenges and puzzles you have to solve are extremely imaginative and fun to work through. Making it a team-based exercise only adds to the fun and can be a strange sort of bonding experience (companies know this, and they can contract with Escape Room to do custom team-building events! Always good to know). While most of the challenges here are cognitive in nature, there are occasionally actions of a physical nature which need to be performed, so be advised you may have to climb a ladder or make a little jump now and again. The complimentary drinks here are a nice touch, and definitely emphasize the laid-back feel of the place. It's a nice little themed waiting room to help get you mentally prepared for your upcoming hour-long challenge. The experience is a bit pricey at $25 a person an hour, though you get a lot for it and, let's face it: you will have a hard time finding anything this awesome elsewhere. It's worth the money, and definitely worth checking out. This place is so fun, one of the better events there is to do besides partying with your friends or anyone who likes to think. Basically, you puzzle-solving using the brain power to get out of a room! The one I tried with the Meetup group is called 'Madame Zola'. It has the demons, devil-worshipping, spirits, Voodoos, Ouija board theme and perfect for some Halloween spook or anytime if you are a fan of these things like myself. LOVE IT!!! Came for a fun family and friends night. We were set to go somewhere else, but they cancelled our reservation so we were set to find another place. We tried Escape Room Room RVA and we were so glad we did. They were open on a Sunday and took all the COVID precautions. We had so much fun and it kept us looking for clues and thinking so we could make it through. The host was awesome, very nice, and accommodating. He set the tone for the game which made it even more fun. We did "Silent Space" which is a hard, but fun room. We made it with a minute to spare. I think the only complaint about that room was that it was very warm in there. Not sure if that was part of the game or they just need to cool it down a bit more. It kept opening up to more rooms so it kept it going thinking when and if we would ever get out. Overall, we all liked it and would like to try the other rooms to see how those are. Past experiences here were great, so I expected the same. However, when we did the Unicorn Room, I was so disappointed as there was no rhyme nor reason with solving clues and puzzles. The puzzles and clues were just all over the place. It was not at the level of what I'm accustomed to with this place. This was a lot of fun! I went with one other person and neither of us had been to an escape room before but we ended up greatly enjoying the experience. There is a lounge area that you wait in right before your room (there are four different rooms at this location) is ready and complimentary soft drinks, water and ice cream are available. Once you're in the room you have 60minutes to "escape". There is an employee monitoring you on a camera and is there to help you with hints if you get stuck. A friend booked a full room for 8 as a birthday outing. We were promptly greeted upon arrival and taken to a lounge to wait for our room to be available. The lounge has free non-alcoholic drinks and ice cream sandwiches--nice touch that I've never seen at any other escape room venue. We played Mystery of room 213, and it was challenging (the hardest room currently), but fun! We're all still talking about some of the clues and can't wait to go back, and maybe even do the same room because we did not escape haha! I've been to a couple of escape rooms and this is by far was the best escape room!!! I booked online the day before. I love how they give you ice cream sandwiches, water, and soda before going in. I had the Vanity room which unfortunately is no longer available. The puzzles were complex and well thought out. Really, the most intricate room I have ever done. The decor and puzzles really amped up the creepy/horror vibe. Our gamemaster was so helpful and noticed when we were repeatedly messing up the big things after our clue (you get three!). Very friendly and cooperative in accommodating our group and a schedule adjustment. 5 of us did the Gypsy room. It was the first escape for 3 of the 5. We had a great time, and the leader did a great job with appropriate clues that helped, but didn't give too much away. We worked across a couple of connected rooms which made it interesting and entertaining. We would very much consider doing it again. This place is not your average escape room, they go above and beyond to make their rooms feel REALISTIC and true to the storyline. Their attention to detail in room design, challenging puzzles, and highly interactive game masters sets them FAR ABOVE any escape room on the East Coast! You live the experience from the moment you pull in the back parking lot to find the entrance, and then down the stairs where the rooms are held in the basement.
