Elkwood Manor Bed & Breakfast - The San Juan Suite

    Elkwood Manor Bed & Breakfast

My wife and I started our 30th anniversary hiking trip through Colorado by staying with Jim and…read moreOdilia. The place itself is very conveniently located to anything in Pagosa and also to various hikes. The facility is visually appealing and the hosts are far and away the nicest, most accommodating people you could ever meet. Just so happened it is the beginning of the season and we were the only guests for two nights. We were downright spoiled with the attention we received. Took full advantage of the happy hour (two hours actually) which included some amazing appetizers and open bar. Our first night we decided to take advantage of the in house dinner menu and it was terrific as well. Tried the filet with mushroom risotto and also the beef stroganoff with rice. We both shared and enjoyed immensely. Dessert was vanilla ice cream with an amaretto/maple sauce. I would drink that with a straw by the way. I was even given seconds on dessert, thanks Jim. We had the loft room in the main house which has its own balcony, fireplace, bathroom, AC unit, sitting area, etc, etc, etc. They think of all the touches including drinking water, smart TV, a fridge, and even simple things like eyeglass cleaning wipes in the room. Very comfortable room, king bed, and overall feel. I should probably mention that each morning we had a custom gourmet type breakfast. Odilia likes to cook and she is good at it. Our last morning we even took our breakfast out on the main deck and enjoyed the breathtaking views. We went hiking that morning and they even let us check out a little late so we could shower up before moving on to our next city. Speaking of which, we were also able to request a to go lunch for our hiking days. Food was great and plentiful. Became lunch and snacks for the day. Big thanks to Jim and Odilia. Give them a chance if you are in the neighborhood.

A college kid rear-ended me and my car was not even drivable. Needless to say I was very upset. I called to cancel the reservation and the woman with whom I spoke (who said she was the owner) refused to refund my payment. The only thing she would do is reschedule the date of the room but I have no plans to be back in that area in the future. I was astounded that she was so crass and uncaring. There is no way that I can recommend this place.

Hi there. I am writing this review in total support of the Spruce Lodge. I truly enjoyed my stay…read morehere even if it was for one evening to rest my head. I visited in early May of this year journeying through southern Colorado visiting my lifelong goal of reaching every national park in the country. So....just coming from Great Sand Dunes National Park exploring for the day, Spruce Lodge was only 66 miles away. Although South Fork is just a drive through town, ending my eventful day here was ideal for me. Also, the following day I was heading to Mesa Verde National Park 137 miles away but Spruce Lodge was situated right in between these 2 great parks so I highly recommend staying here especially because there's no towns or cities nestled in between if you were to bypass South Fork....if you're headed west like I was, you head straight into the mountains for a while. In my opinion...Spruce Lodge had aspects of part bed and breakfast with a villa and rustic feel to its rooms. Lol, I was sort of enamored with the looks of it all that I photographed my room and the grounds outside to post on Yelp explaining how cozy and clean I felt the accommodations were. Simply trying to explain...Spruce Lodge is a little mom and pop spot to stay at located right off the main road in South Fork. I checked in at the main lodge and was kindly given the keys to my room by the innkeeper. My room was based back outside the lodge towards the left hand side. It was connected as part of a townhouse/condo which was an unexpected surprise because all I was asking for was a simple place to sleep for the night. And yet I go so much more. My room inside had a cabin vibe to it and felt very clean. Also, there were 2 chairs next to the porch outside which I sat down on after dinner soaking up the setting sun before heading to bed. There is a BBQ restaurant right next door to the lodge that looked interesting but unfortunately the one night I was staying on a Monday evening, was the one night the BBQ place was closed. Still, the innkeeper recommended The Old Firehouse Restaurant just down the road and it was more than suffice. Old Firehouse serves American food offering sandwiches, burgers, soups, salads, pizza and classic dinners such as meat loaf and pot roast. I'd recommend going here if you're not a BBQ person or if the BBQ restaurant next door is closed. Finally, Spruce lodge has free continental breakfast offered starting 6:30 am. If you're interested in a full breakfast, I believe there's a restaurant that you pay for inside the actual lodge...though since I wanted an early start out to Mesa Verde the following day, the continental breakfast was plenty enough. Almost forgot, visiting in early May, my room rate was $65! That was fantastic for the situation and for what I believed to be a quality a place to stay. I can imagine when it's more in season, the rates would never be this cheap. In all, I'd certainly recommend choosing Spruce Lodge. For location, accommodations, price, food options and surroundings it's about as good as you'll find when trekking through southern Colorado or wherever your travels may take you.

Creekside Chalet review: 5 stars. Honestly, 6 if I could. The hot tub alone deserves its own…read moreaward--basically a therapy session with jets. The place was so clean, I half expected a cleaning fairy to waltz in and curtsy. The furniture and beds? Comfier than a post-Thanksgiving nap. Pillows? Fluffier than a baby alpaca. And those clear plastic boxes for extra bedding? Pure organizational wizardry. Marie Kondo would weep. Cozy blankets made me consider quitting my job and becoming a professional blanket burrito. Pet friendly too--complete with poop bags and couch covers so my dog could live her best life and I didn't have to wrestle her off the sofa like a WWE match. The smoking station on the back porch? Genius. Keeps butts out of nature while still letting smokers feel fancy. The kitchen? Huge table, solid chairs, and a crockpot that made me feel like I'd been transported to a cooking show. Quality pots and pans for days, but only four coffee mugs. FOUR. For a whole chalet. Are we hosting an exclusive espresso club? And one dish towel? My sponge practically filed a complaint. Here's the kicker: it snowed overnight the first night, and by the time we came back from skiing, the walkway was shoveled and the hot tub lid was cleared off like some magical snow-removal ninja had swung by. Honestly, it felt like Santa was moonlighting as chalet maintenance. We did lose heat the first night for a few hours, which gave us an unexpected "polar survival" experience, but those thick duvets were life-savers. Overall, 10/10. Already plotting how to make this my permanent address.

You have to be going to Platoro to get there, as there is only one through road from anywhere that goes through town. Sky Line Lodge sits across the Conejos River from the road and shares a magnificent view of the mountains with many of their rental cabins, as well as the rest of the very small town. The food is good. We prefer their burgers and fries, but they have breakfast, lunch and dinner on a reasonably priced menu. This is a family run place with plenty of rustic charm and ambience. We always go there at least once during aspen season and have never been disappointed. They're only open from late May until late September, too, so don't think you can just pop in for winter. They won't be there.

She demonstrated no empathy of concern for issue and never once apologized for their error. The cabin assigned was not the cabin we requested upon making the reservation. A confirmation was never sent as promised so this created confusion upon our arrival. The cabin assigned was filthy, the bed was not made and there were used bath towels in the bathroom. The blankets were riddled with hair, pet or human. The utensils in the kitchen were filthy. We washed everything before using. The electric fuse box was not cover and hot wires were exposed. The propane stove and heater were not ventilated which required us to sleep with the windows open. Overall, the area is beautiful and I could anticipate at rustic cabin. However the is no excuse for rudeness and a filthy facility. Research other options, or bring your own sheets and blankets, a bar of soap and dish gloves because you will need to clean everything. Clorox!!!! still waiting for an apology from the owner...
