I was on the Sunday Dec 7 morning train with my wife and our two grandkids, so it was just about $300 for a pretty dismal one hour ride. From a child's perspective (which means not taking the cost into account), it was what it was: a Christmas-themed train ride, with decorated cars, and hot chocolate served with a packaged chocolate chip cookie. After a thirty minute up and back ride along the Sacramento River, it ended back where it began, with 'snow blowers' blanketing us with what felt like soap suds (not sticky, however) in lieu of real snow. From an adult perspective, it was pretty miserable. Certainly overpriced for what we got, only two elf-led songs (Jingle Bells and Rudolph and two others) in each direction, no music and no Santa, save for the bearded guy in the Santa hat with (it's true) no white beard, who looked like he wished he was anywhere else but there trying to appease the kids with a "what do you want for Christmas?" question as he walked the cars with Mrs. Claus, who tried to put on a nice face during the entire ordeal. If you look up 'meh' in the dictionary, there's a good chance the picture you see will be of this year's ride. This was definitely a swing and a miss. In summary, they're not delivering as promised. To a six or three year old, these things can be explained away, but my recommendation would be to cancel if you can. read more

We been going on the River Fox Train for several years now and always enjoyed it. This year was a terrible ride though, all the songs, crafts, games, etc are gone. You just get on, have hot chocolate, then get off. Santa comes at the very end and didn't interact very much. Not sure what happened to what used to be an amazing ride. Also I looked up what we paid last year vs. this year and prices increased 50% per ticket! So it's significantly more expensive and worse now. Total waste of money at this point. Only reason that it is a 2 star instead of 1 star review is that they did a TON of work to spruce up the train decorations from previous years. I guess all the money for the increased ticket prices went to the lights and decor instead of the music and games. read more

This was by far one of the worst afternoon tea experiences I've ever had. After a long walk to reach our seats, we were told hot water would be brought out. It took 40 minutes to receive water that was barely warm and not hot enough to steep tea. I was seated directly in front of the hot water dispenser and could clearly see that it wasn't even up to temperature for nearly an hour. Even once it was "ready," the water remained lukewarm. The tea service was sloppy and poorly planned. Guests were handed tea bags instead of a proper presentation, and there were not enough tea baskets to go around. Staff reused baskets from table to table, resulting in people receiving teas that others had already passed on. There was only one desirable tea option; the rest were cheap, low-quality brands you could find at a discount grocery store. The food was just as disappointing. We were served two burnt scones that were black on the bottom and completely inedible. Replacements were brought, but they were cold and average at best--still somehow the highlight of the meal. The tea sandwiches were hard and stale, clearly made far in advance. The pear and brie sandwiches were sliced so thin they had almost no filling, and the cucumber sandwiches were only tolerable after removing one side of the rock-hard bread. The train ride itself offered nothing scenic--just views of tractor trailers, unused machinery, and random equipment. This experience was meant to celebrate a birthday, and instead it was embarrassing. I ended up apologizing for something I genuinely thought would be special. I would not recommend this to anyone and would not waste my time, money, or appetite here again. If you want an example of how not to execute an afternoon tea service, this is it. read more

Read lots of reviews that this train was "the best Christmas Train in the area". That's bold since Sacramento has the polar express. This was our first time on the River Fox Christmas Train. It was lack luster at best. When asked if we were going to see decoration out the window the "elf" told us all the actors they used to have had been "poached" and all they would be doing was a few songs and returning to the beginning. So we had an hour long train ride with packaged Grandmas cookies and hot chocolate for $320 for a family of 4. Save your time and money and find something else to do this winter. Afternoon tea train, El Capitan, the ac is broken. The general manager that was on our train the male in his late 50's was all over the place. They said the AC would be getting going but it never did. It was impossible to get any of the servers. When the server came by to bring us water, the general manger grabs the water from our table and helps another while only filling 2 out of 4 cups. Terrible service. Ran out of food in the first 30 mins. Never got any refills, never received any new tea, waste of money! Planes, Trains And Automobiles! SITREP Soring down the train tracks for a change for Happy Hour! So what a blast to catch a train for a change! The River Fox Train has an OUTSTANDING staff that professionally put together some wonderful *THEMED* train rides as well! There have been Train Robbery themed outings, Zombie theme train rides, even the more basic School Reunion train ride parties. In this most current instance, I was enjoying a fun TIKI EXOTIC BAR experience, complete with the Tiki Bars & Drinks! A couple drinks later I was already flying high and I wasn't even on a plane! THE SETUP I've reviewed jets and car rental agencies before, but not a train. It doesn't matter to me that this train isn't really going anywhere EXCEPT for a sweet, meditative jaunt across the Yolo County countryside. But that's enough for me, so this is fun! This particular trek was put together by several friends, which led to a group of friends about 90-100, most of whom I knew as friends, acquaintances and yeeps. We got to hang enjoy the beautiful scenery of this late Spring countryside whisking by us at a 25-30 mph clip. It started out a bit on the warm side, but quickly transitioned to the very cool side by the end of the trip. [Those who brought sweaters were thinking ahead!] DRINKS River Fox was very cool in allowing passengers to buy their drink tickets before they even boarded the trains. This review is for the River Fox Magical Christmas Train. Last year (2024), we went on the same train experience and it was wonderful! The $70 per person experience included hot chocolate, cookies, the ability to purchase other drinks/snacks and, most importantly, many fun activities for the kids. We had an amazing "elf" server, there was someone playing live music, whole train cars singing, each train car got to play elf-led Bingo with prizes for the kids, Santa and Mrs. Claus stopped by, and the kids even enjoyed a "snowball" fight at the end. My kids (2 and 4 at the time) plus my cousins' kids (7 and 9 at the time) all absolutely loved it. This year, we couldn't wait to go again with the same group. Unfortunately, though the price was the same as last year, many of the aspects that made the train ride so special were no longer included. There was one "elf" server who simply dropped off hot chocolate at the table but did not bring any of the Christmas cheer we enjoyed last year, there was no person playing the guitar throughout the train, there was no Bingo or other game for the kids beyond coloring, and there was no snowball fight. The train was decorated nicely--and we did get some good pictures with Santa and Mrs. Claus--but the difference between the two years was stark. As we were walking off the train, my daughter (five years old) said "Mom, that was pretty boring this year." What a bummer. We booked the magical train ride and were planning on taking my cousin and her family out, while they were in town for Christmas. Unfortunately, they cancelled their trip out here. So, we made sure we had fun for them. It was an amazing experience. The adults and kids had a lot of fun. They have activities in between. The staff were amazing and the train was so festive. We each had a cookie and hit chocolate. They have the options to purchase alcoholic drinks for the adults. The only down fall is that there is no scenic route and I by the time I got my wine, we were heading back. It's a super short ride. Overall, I would do it again with the family and the kids. Fun Rail Bikes! What a novel concept! These pedal powered bikes (with an electric motor assist) are such a fun way to explore along the river. The ride is quite peaceful as you enjoy the views of the river and orchards. Arrive a bit early for check in and orientation. Two staff members join you (in front and behind the group) but they offered little information (apparently there were free snacks but we never knew). The ride starts and stops at the River Fox train station, which has a fun grassy area and small shop, which is likely a lot of fun in warmer weather. It was a cold day, so dress accordingly, as it got quite cold while riding. Would be great if a hot coffee or hot chocolate could be purchased after?! I would definitely do this again! This was for the afternoon tea experience, and it was absolutely horrible and a complete waste of money. About 15 minutes in we received a pot of water, but it took another 45 minutes before we were finally given Twining and Stash tea bags, and even then there was no milk or cream. The teapot kept tilting and had a tea candle to keep it warm. No food was served at all, so the jam placed on the table had nothing to go with it. A table across from us asked the apparently one main server when the food would arrive and were simply told "sorry." What made it worse was that no one explained what was going on. The wait staff should have gone to each table to explain why we didn't receive what we paid for. Instead, multiple staff members just kept walking past everyone without saying anything. My cousin being soooooo intelligent ;-) haha.... found the one car with AC and snagged us a table! Go, girl! So that was a plus. It was a 2 hour train tour on the Weekender Express. We had drinking wristbands and a cute little table. We were assisted by staff members -- Eugene, Angel, Cecilia, and Rachel. We even took a funny hoola hoop video for social media outside in the patio area while waiting to embark on the tour. Overall, a little pricey, but always a good time! read more

This was our 3rd year doing the Christmas Train and I'm sad to say we are done. You are assigned a themed car on a train that takes you 30 min one direction and 30 min back. You have an elf that leads you in activities and sings and Santa comes by. There's hot cocoa and treats for purchase. It's always felt a little pricey for what it is but my kids loved it and that made it worth it. The first 2 years were great, but this year the experience lacked the value we've gotten in the past. For the cost ($300+ for 5 people) you want to be blown away. Our elf made it clear this was her 4th train trip of the day and was a total downer. She wasted time chastising our car and it made the whole trip feel much shorter than in the past. The whole experience felt stale. They always have 1 "helper" getting the hot cocoa and they can never get it made fast enough. I have many operational suggestions -- have water ready for guests, hire another helper per car (you could double the business of food purchases if people did not have to wait). We were on this train several years ago and there's zero comparison to what we just experienced. The Elf on our train car sang a few songs along with kids that she asked to stand and sing-along with her because she was too embarrassed to do it by herself. She held a card in her hand the whole time, in case she forgot the words to....jingle bells. They came around with coloring sheets that I could've printed at home myself and packaged crayons. The kind you get in a restaurant when you're waiting for your food to arrive. They handed out packaged cookies ...that tasted like a packaged cookie. Then they passed out chutes and ladders and scrabble. Yes. Board games. To try to entertain us on a CHRISTMAS TRAIN. Oh and the music? Mariah Carey playing from her cell phone. Yes, you read that right folks. When Santa came with Mrs. Claus, he made his way quickly through our train car and paused for a brief moment for a picture. I'm not sure he said one word to my five-year-old. The train route is also not the same as previous years. Yes, it's along the river with the freeway and dumped garbage in view. There are no lights and no Christmas decorations along the way as the website describes. Save your money! We attended the River Fox Christmas Train on 12/7 for the 6:00 PM ride with a party of four plus an infant, and it was extremely disappointing. This was not the experience my children were used to from previous years. There were no games on the train, the cookies were stale, and the elf had zero energy, no singing, no interaction, no Christmas spirit. Santa arrived late, spent about one minute with the kids, and barely spoke to them. There was absolutely no Christmas magic. My kids look forward to this every year, and even they said, "That was not fun." It truly felt like money down the drain. To make matters worse, I left feedback directly with the company and never received a response, which shows a lack of concern for customer satisfaction. Very disappointing and nothing like previous years. We have attended the River Fox Christmas Train in past years and this year was a huge letdown. Santa was honestly pathetic. He had no energy, no warmth, and no joy. He looked far too young, and it was painfully obvious he had a pillow stuffed under his clothes and tied off with a belt, which completely ruined the magic. In previous years, Santa and Mrs. Claus were robust, happy, and personally visited each child -- that interaction is what made this event special. This year felt lazy and phoned in. There were no games like bingo, which we enjoyed in past years, and only three songs. Previous years had many more and felt festive; this felt flat and empty. Organization was poor. We were told groups would be called and escorted to seats, but when our group was called, no escort showed up so we had to find our seats on our own anyway. Another downgrade: in past years you could order alcohol from your seat. This year you had to walk to a separate alcohol car yourself which left us losing out on seeing our grandchildren's experience. Worst of all was the Grinch. He was not playful or funny -- he was aggressive, loud, and genuinely frightening. He terrified my grandchildren and reduced them to tears. That is completely unacceptable for a family Christmas event and showed a serious lack of judgment. For the price, this experience was not worth it. Unfortunately, today's (5/17/26) afternoon tea at 2:00 pm was a disaster. There was only one server for over 25 people in the train car. It took some time to get served. The tiered plate of small sandwiches (2 cucumber and 2 lemon chicken), two scones, and two candy cream like desserts) was served first. Then, table water was served. Next, hot water came without the tea bags. Finally, the server hands you one tea bag per person (you don't have a choice of tea as mentioned on the menu that sits at your table), but the hot water is no longer hot, it's warm! So, you have to ask for hot water. Once you get the hot water, it's almost time to leave. Sadly, this was an expensive late Mother's Day celebration. On a nice pleasant day, it's a nice ride. Each cart fits two people and i can see it as a nice date or excursion with a friend. Or group of friends. Depending on the time slot, sometimes you will have a larger group of people random people, or go with a big group of your friends so you can ride the same time slot together. I went on a day where it was beautiful weather, but would still recommend sun block and water as the track has no shade. Its a total of 10 miles, 5 miles one way and 5 miles back. It's a good work out if you want to peddle the whole way, or if you get tired, there's a motor with power assist so you can just cruise/drive. Seats are adjustable to fit different height to bring you closer to the peddles. Im 4'11 and my buddy is 5'10 and we were happy with our seat adjustments. When you're riding, you end up having quite a bit of distance between each carts, so you get plenty of privacy to talk and such if needed. It has some charm in scenery, but id so majority of it, you will see into someone back yard. But, when everything is lush and full bloom, its quite nice. Staff members were very friendly and knowledgeable. There's a parking lot to park at. There are porta pottys and hand washing stations at check in. I highly recommend it for first time rail cart riders as it's a flat rate for two seats as you pay for the whole cart (not per person). read more

A date surprised me with tickets to the Magical Christmas Train ride with River Fox last week and we had, fittingly, such a magical experience!! Our tickets were originally for the 4:00 PM ride and after running behind & hitting traffic, we did not arrive at the location until almost 4:10. We were heart broken when the staff said we were too late to catch our train! However, those same staff members were nice enough to call into the ticket office for us & so kindly had our tickets switched to the last ride of the day (7:00 PM) since there happened to still be a few seats available. We were so embarrassed, but so grateful for River Fox's accommodation and kindness! - Note: They do mention in the ticket email that arriving 20 minutes before your ride is strongly recommended, so I'd listen... - Once we returned at 6:40, we were so amazed to see how the platform and gift shop were illuminated with gorgeous lights and holiday decor and props for photos. Walking alongside the decorated and glowing train cars was so reminiscent of the Polar Express and made for such a comfy and festive feeling. Once onboard, each train car was themed, completely decked out and toasty warm! We were seated on the snowman car and (from what we could tell) were the only kid-free couple onboard and were a little concerned we wouldn't get the full experience. However, we sat down and were immediately greeted by an elf and were treated to some tasty chocolate chip cookies, warm hot cocoa in a souvenir cup, and with a full snack bar menu! They offered specialty wines & beers along with packaged snacks like a souvenir popcorn mix and (my favorite) Haribo gummy bears for truly affordable prices. Throughout the entire ride we felt entertained, included in games/activities, and didn't want the night to end! Mr. and Mrs. Claus were also active and recurring characters throughout the night and gave each table undivided attention for a few moments which certainly made me smile and made the kids onboard light up! I will recommend this experience to any and all friends with children looking for holiday activities this time of year. It was worth every penny and truly unforgettable! Today was our first time riding the Christmas train and I'm sorry to say that we agree with all of the poor reviews for this year's train. Our experience, as other reviewers are reporting, lacked what is promised by River Fox for the Christmas train. There is no excuse for the appearance of a Santa without a white beard, instead sporting his own dark beard. He had no personality and did not engage with the grandkids very much. We just did the Magical Christmas Train and it wasn't so magical. They advertised having "elfish games, sing-along, and more" but none of those things happened. I've never written a yelp review but felt so compelled to write this because of the AWFUL experience we had. Been on this Christmas train years in a row with our kids and it had been so memorable and worth the money. They either had major budget cuts this year, or everyone called in sick the day we went. Train ride started out with coloring pages and three crayons. Hot cocoa didn't arrive until 40 minutes in which was so hot we couldn't drink until we were walking off the train. Previous years included an elf who sang songs and guided you through the train ride experience with cookies, cocoa, drink offerings for the adults, bingo, snow ball fights. We got NONE of that. It was a train ride through West sac that went one way, stopped, reversed, and dumped you back into a "winter wonderland" which was spitting out soap suds and had porta pottys lined up. I'll end it with this: my kids usually end the train ride with "aww, it's over already?!" But this year, the train hadnt even stopped and my kids said "when can we get off?!" read more

I went here around 3:30pm on a Saturday to celebrate an anniversary and thought it is so cool how there's a boba train now! Now, I've been on a wine train before and loved the experience, so I was super excited about this train since I like boba. Anyways, it was a very hot day (around 110F) that day and we were told ahead of time that one of the train carts air conditioning was broken and not working, so I was a bit worried about that. They have a couple food booths outside of the train here and some people grabbed some food before going on the train. We got some Pork Dumplings and Chicken Dumplings at one of the booths there so we could eat it on the train with our boba drinks we would be sampling. When we got on the train, it wasn't as bad as I thought since it was only the last cart that didn't have a working air conditioning. This train has different things to do in each cart where you can either get alcohol or try another boba place based on the "boba passport" they gave everyone when you check in. They also decorated some boba stations, like the one with an inflatable character which is cool since lots of people took pictures next to it. All the boba drinks were refreshing which is nice for a hot day. I'd recommend this place! Overall, I thought it was lots of fun walking around the indoor and also the outdoor train carts and stamping the boba passport at each station. The train ride was very bumpy though, but I didn't mind too much since the music they played on the train helped me forget about the bumpiness. It was lots of fun sampling all those different boba drinks while on a train too! We look forward to the Christmas Train ride every year! & Had so much fun in the past we told our friends they had to come too. We feel so bad because this year was a totally let down and honestly rip off. It seemed very unorganized and not interactive like the past. No Christmas music, no fun games, no little menu with stuff we can order. I had to ask the worker if there was still a snow ball fight because the kids kept asking. We Basically sat there the whole time with no interaction other than Santa making a quick stop bye and to fill the hot chocolate and bring coloring pages. We unfortunately will not be coming back next year. So bummed! read more

We started the tradition of bringing our kids with extended family on the Christmas train in 2015 and have always enjoyed it each year! This year we were disappointed and sad that the magic seemed to have gone. Half the train ride was spent bringing out hot cocoa and prepackaged cookies. We sang 2 songs. We saw Santa for a couple minutes at the end. He didn't sit or ask any of the kids what they wanted, he took a quick picture and went to the next kid. The Grinch came on the train after we had already stopped and the kids threw snow balls at him as he walked through the train car. They were given a Santa letter to write and one coloring page with a handful of broken crayons. The train ride was shorter than in the past and everyone in our party kept waiting for the "fun" to begin, but it seemed to not happen this year. Not only were the adults disappointed, but all the kids talked about how it use to be and were bummed there was no bingo, no elves, no story, no guitar playing, no anything! read more

Cute concept if you have kids and need entertainment. The train moves very very slow, it literally takes you to the tomato fields then goes straight back to where you came from. There's drinks on the train however limited to some beers and mixed drinks and there's wine in some of the carts. The inside looked well kept and clean, and the outside carts had randomly plastic chairs. I guess I was expecting a better train ride but it was so slow I fell asleep at some points lol We went during fall season so at the end of it you get to take pics at the pumpkin patch and your ticket also comes with one free pumpkin. There's some kids events. Again cute and fun if you have kids but I prob wouldn't come here again. The play area also had a food cafe with hot dogs and a little shop with clothes. Was it $60 worth? Probably not unless you have kids and need to wow them lol read more

We arrived 15 minutes early but after the bathroom came to the booth at 10:20 for our 10:30 ride, unfortunately no refund was available and we left town the next day so couldn't reschedule for a later date. read more

My girlfriend and I celebrated our 1 year anniversary aboard the Great Gatsby-themed New Year's Eve train ride (general admission tickets). We had read concerning reviews from last year's Christmas ride, but we wanted to give this event a chance and we were pleasantly surprised. The staff were attentive and enthusiastic, bathrooms were plentiful, clean and accessible; hors d'oeuvres were passed very regularly and were delicious (3 courses with a dessert course at the end). The drinks were a little pricey but not outrageous, considering the great service at the bar and generous pours. If you plan on drinking more than a couple drinks each, the open bar included with VIP admission would likely pay for itself. We mentioned to a gentleman named Anthony (whom we soon found out was the General manager) that it would be our anniversary as soon as the clock struck midnight, and he promptly returned with a generously gifted bottle of champagne, which we of course shared with the tables and couples around us. Anthony the Food Service manager also blessed us as we were leaving with a gift to go. Ashley was helping us navigate the corridors and stairways of the 1920s era train cars on the way out and everybody maintained great customer service from start to finish. Alex also entertained us with a few rounds of Blackjack (for fun, no real money bets) Overall a great experience and we can't wait to return for the Valentine's Day ride! read more

TRAIN RIDE FROM HELL Took my boyfriend here for his 26th birthday. I bought the package with assigned seating, champagne and a charcuterie board. We were seated at a small table meant for a cheaper package (Be advised that if you are seated on the right side of the train your windows are tinted and small so it's hard to see any of the views) About 30 mins into our train ride we were informed that they won't be offering any of the items off of the charcuterie board and instead will be giving us cheeseburgers. We paid full price for the burgers $20. They were supposed to come with fries but we were informed that the fryer wasn't working. The burgers came with obviously expired, slimy lettuce that had me concerned about food poisoning. Quality you could find at a gas station. The historic part of this train ride doesn't exist either because according to the staff: the speakers weren't charged. So no music or audio. With tickets costing so much money I thought this would be a unique, memorable experience. Instead I got completely ripped off. Please don't take your loved ones here. read more
